    1. [NCSURRY] Surry-Stokes Records
    2. I need some information about where to search for records of families who lived along the Dan River and appear to have been in Surry Co. then Stokes but never moved. For the part of Stokes that was taken from Surry, are the records, prior to formation of Stokes, be in Surry or were they transferred to Stokes? The family I am researching was in that area probably as early as 1770. Does anyone know what records the State Archives would have that might help me. If this list is a busy one, please email me privately at bradbury@acsalaska.net . Thanks. Connie Btradbury

    1. Re: [NCSURRY] Question Please
    2. For those persons who did not have birth records [a novelty in all but a handful of states! We southerners lose out] until the 20th century, we have to use some estimates. These guidelines were given a long ago genealogical lecture, and they have generally [note that word] helped me come up with an estimated birth date when I don't have a date from a census or other source. In North Carolina and in Virginia, and probably in other southern states, a young man was eligible for the militia at age 16. That's why we seek militia lists, especially in colonial days. (I note that such lists frequently occur in the Journals of the North Carolina Genealogical Society, but probably not for every county.) A man may have married the first time [always keep in mind he/she may have had multiple marriages] at approximately age 26. By that time, he probably has acquired some land to support a wife and family. A woman could get married at any age, but generally at age 14 or older. However, always consider that she, too, may have had multiple marriages!!! I have a couple of females in my family history who had four husbands!!! (Deeds and other documents help out here.) The first baby could come at any time!!! Death could come at any time. For females, it may have been after the birth of a child--or the birth of twins. Lots of deaths were due to drowning. The horses could not always cross a flooding river or creek. Another thought to keep in mind: If a surviving child or children were in line to inherit property, particularly land, from a deceased parent or a grandparent, there probably was a guardianship--to preserve the property--not the child's health. A child in general over age 14 could choose his or her own guardian. (Watch those court records!) I am sure others on this list can add some guidelines for estimating a person's age--other than the later censuses!! The county clerks did not keep records for us genealogists. But we use their records a lot. That is why the Family History Library in Salt Lake City is filled with thousands, nay, millions of films of official records. 2. It's good you pointed that out specifically, Bob. I assumed she was looking for records from census records, but birth certificates were not issued uniformly in the state (there are some exceptions) until 1913. There are some delayed birth certificates for earlier births, that were done to create a record for Social Security, but those won't go back to 1811, obviously. Church and Bible and census records are the best available records for 1811 births. Also, tax lists and land records can help with male birth date ranges. 3. Thank you one and ALL for the information. I am looking for Nancy Williams born 1811 in Lincoln Co, NC and died in Macon Co, NC. I have all the information on her and my GGG Grandfather Solomon and their sons. There just seems to be no record of her birth or in who's household she lived in between her birth and her marriage in 1840. I have shed quiet a few tears looking for her too. I will not give up on her though. Thank you all again for the advise and comments. You are too kind. 1. Re: [NCSURRY] Question Please
    2. Regarding the first part of your question about Lincoln County records, Lincoln was created in 1779 out of Tryon County. In 1811, you should not be needing to worry about the confusion that once occurred about the NC/SC border. I believe that was settled long before 1811. Lincoln did originally border SC, before Gaston County was created. But I believe most of the land grant confusion occurred in the 1700's. As you move back in time, you may need to keep that in mind. Brent Holcomb published a book on those land grants, if you need to track it down at some point. Other counties were created out of Lincoln later on, so you may have to go to a different set of county records after those dates, when you are working forward in time and not backwards. For example: Cleveland County was created out of part of Rutherford and part of Lincoln in 1841. Catawba County was created out of Lincoln in 1842. Gaston County was created out of Lincoln in 1846. I would suggest that you bookmark this site for future reference. It is very helpful in keeping track of counties in NC. It has a list, and it also has illustrations at certain periods of time. _http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/countyfm.htm_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccatawb/countyfm.htm) Surry gave up land to other counties, too, including Wilkes in 1777 (part of Wilkes came from the District of Washington), Stokes in 1789, and Yadkin in 1850. 3. I apologise, I sent this to your private email instead of the list! Nanalee, Thank you so much for this information! I talked with my aunt today and she informed me that Levi left Rhoda and the kids and he supposedly went to Kentucky. That was new info for me...LOL. She said he either married or was living with another woman. Levi and Rhoda had a daughter named Priscilla, my GG Grandmother who was a servant (indentured?) when she was about 12 or 13 and is supposed to be listed in a census for Surry in this other person's household. Levi died in Kentucky and my aunt says her G Grandmother Priscilla never remarried. Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the information! If anyone else has any info on this Levi.....his birthplace, his parents or just anything at all? Please let me know by personal email or on this list PLEASE! 1. Re: [NCSURRY] Joseph Wiliams of Early Surry Co., NC
    2. Thank you, Pam, for sharing that information with me. It is very helpful to understand the composition of the family of Joseph Williams of Surry Co., NC. I hope someday I will be able to find out more about his alleged father, Nathaniel Williams, who at one time lived in colonial Hanover Co. ca 1733-1735 and then later in Louisa Co., near Mychunk/Mechunk Creek. He, the father Nathaniel Williams, was characterized as a neighbor in Louisa Co. of some probable nephews or step-nephews, the orphans of Henry Graves, who supposedly died in Hanover Co. The second wife of Henry Graves was a sister of Nathaniel Williams--Mary Williams. I found some records for Mary Graves in Lunenburg and then Mecklenburg Co., VA wherein she gave some land to her son Elijah Graves. More information provided if anyone is interested. But PLEASE--if you have a Williams in your family, this is to let you know that unless your Williams lived in colonial Virginia in one of these counties, I cannot tell you of your pedigree. These were the counties: Henrico Co., part of which became Goochland Co.; Hanover Co. and this was prior to the American Revolution, and in some cases prior to 1746!!!
