    1. [NCSURRY-L] MORTON
    2. Hi. I'm new to the list and very glad this list is being offered. I am searching for ancestors of the Samuel MORTON and Ann HOLTON WALLACE line. In particular, two of Sam's children: Samuel and James. Much has been written about William, but it's my belief that my gg-grandfather, David MORTON, who left NC for Union County, TN is the son of James and/or Samuel. Any information on these two would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Peace from Pittsburgh, Nina Morton T.

    1. [NCSURRY-L] 1771 Poll - Four Maynards
    2. The 1771 poll for the new county of Surry had four Maynards listed (spelled Manor). These were Gibson, George, Jacob, and Christopher. Not many years later they were joined in Surry/Wilkes by William, James, and Jesse. I'd love to communicate with anyone who thinks they know the origins of this clan, or who is willing to join the hunt. Cheers from Hal, located on Johnston Atoll, 825 miles WSW of Honolulu.

    2. John Speight
    3. My surname interests include the following, mostly folks from the area around Deron on Hwy 268 east of Pilot Mt. to Westfield, up US 52 to Bannertown. Surnames: Boyles, Hall, Redman, Stephens, Simmons, Johnson, Martin, Banner, Haymore, Jackson, Taylor, Stone, Fulk. I grew up in Bannertown - well, for my first 5 years - then moved to Winston-Salem and now live in the Atlanta area. I spent a lot of my formative years living with my Stephens cousins in Westfield. My grandfather Wm. Henry Davenport was adopted abt 1895 by George F. Davenport and Ellen Vaughn in Bannertown. I'm looking for his natural parents - last names might be Marsh and Proctor (not married!). He was born in May 1890 and had an older sister Sally/Sarah who was adopted by some Reeces abt the same time. Thanks. John Speight Lilburn, GA

    1. [NCSURRY-L] Introduction...
    2. Edward A. Black, Sr. & Ruth M. Black
    3. I thought I'd introduce myself since I recently decided to establish this list. My name is Edward A. Black, Sr. and I established this list for those who desire to contact others who have like desires in locating family members or doing other genealogical rersearch in Surry County, North Carolina. My interest in Surry, Co., NC comes because my wife has a number of family members that were born and raised in what is now Surry. A number of them lived in the Mt. Airy area in Surry County. I myself was born and raised in California where my parents moved to after World War II. I currently live in Lancaster, California and have been married 27-1/2 years, having raised a son, who himself is married and has 2 sons of his own. He lives in McAllen, TX. I have found that the lists I've taken part in have helped a lot in locating family members on either my own or that of my wife's family. Enjoy this new site and I do hope that it will assist you users with your genealogical work. It is intended to be a tool for that purpose. Take care & God Bless, Sincerily, Edward A. 1. [NCSURRY-L] LINDSAY/LINDSEY
    2. Margaret L Smith
    3. There are a number of land transactions for Lindseys in Surry County durin the period 1780-1796 or so: sale of land from Henry Speer to Carlton Lindsay on 7 Sep 1786, grant to James Lindsey on Seven Island Creek on 9 Nov 1787, slae from James Lindsey & wife Mary to John Durham on 12 Aug 1788, sale from John Durham to Joshua May Lindsey on 17 Nov 1790, etc. Also, in 1787, Carlton/Calton Lindsey was indicted for "Tresspass" and found guilty. He had land siezed and sold by the Sheriff, Hugh Armstrong. James Lindsey also lost land to a sheriff's sale due to having failed to "surrender up" Calton for the March term of the Superior Court in 1788. How would I go about finding out just what offense Calton/Carlton Lindsey committed? I got the information on the land transactions from the Surry County Deed Abstracts, compiled by Mrs. W.O. Absher. What other records are available for Surry County, which I could search for information about this family? We believe James Lindsey may have been the James Lindsey of Brunswick and Caroline Counties in VA. James, Carlton, and others later moved to Rutherford Co. NC and the Spartenburg SC area, possibly as a result of Carlton's difficulties with the law! (Though he again got into trouble in Rutherford Co.) Margaret Lindsey Smith [email protected]

    1. [NCSURRY-L] (NCSURRY-L) SAMMONS/SALMONS
    2. Great! A Surry County list! It has been very difficult for me to get Surry County information since I am in CA. DAVID SAMMONS/SALMONS first appears in Surry when he marries NANCY PETTIJOHN/PETTYJOHN in 1823. He then appears in the census of 1830 and 1840 in Surry married and raising a family. Apparently a couple of sons and four or five daughters from this marriage. He appears in the 1850 census of Surry living in the Household of SUSANNAH SHORE/SHORES, having married ELIZA SHORES of that household within the past year. There is no trace of DAVID'S first family nor any indication of his or NANCY'S parents. I can trace DAVID from the 1850 census forward (I'm his gg grandson) but can't find anything before his being married in 1823. Is there anyone working this or related lines that would like to swap info? Anyone with any info - Please let me know. Thanks! John Richard Sammons JRS
