Unfortunately North Carolina didn't start keeping good records until the early 20th century: birth & death records (1913 sticks in my mind); *mandatory* deed registration (some time in the 1920s?). Your best bet is to look him up in the estate records at the Archives in Raleigh or in church/cemetery records. If he was a veteran, the Sons of the Confederacy might have info on him. Hi! I've been subscribed to this list a few days, but it doesn't seem to be very active, so I decided to jump in with a question someone might be able to answer. I believe that my 4th g-grandfather died in Surry Co in 1883. A distant cousin has an old letter which gives the year he died, but not the place, and I believe I have found him in the 1870 and 1880 census for Surry Co NC. Can anyone tell me if death records were kept in the county in 1883? And if they do exist, where would I find them? I recently moved to Charlotte NC (a couple hours south of Surry Co) and I may have time to travel there sometime after Christmas, and I'd like to have some idea if what I'd be looking for exists! Any info will be greatly appreciated! -- Cherie Atkinson Clark [email protected] http://members.aol.com/chersfmly/ Looking for Atkinson in WV and PA, Fife in PA, Kimmins in WV and PA, Skiles in PA, Tolbert in VA and WV, Webb in VA and WV, McDaid in PA, and Faris in WV and OH. Hi, This is particularly for John Ottinger who wrote this message dated 11/19/98 3:21:30 AM: <<An ancestor was mentioned on this list who fought at the battle of King's Mountain. Does anyone know of a list of people who were there and where they came from? I'm familiar with Moss's list, but it is just names, not where the combatants lived. It's been my understanding that most came from the Holston and Watauga settlements in what is now east Tennessee, but I know some were from North Carolina counties, like John BARTON of Wilkes County. I'm particularly looking for information on other BARTONS in the area from around that time.
