I look forward to going in the future and writing you all about it. Patrick Ruffin [email protected] (PATRICK S J RUFFIN) Dale, I forget if I directly e-mailed you or not regarding the Ruthven- Ruffin connection, but it has been pretty much put to rest. It has been determined that William Ruffin came from England, possibly Sussex County; that is, his parents were English. When William arrived in Virginia, he was an eighteen-year-old commoner who signed his name with an X. On the other hand, following generations became prominent Virginians, among them Edmund, who fired the first shot that hit Fort Sumter, the first shot of the Civil War. Patrick and Carol Martocia [email protected] (CAROL MARTOCIA) Dale, I am a descendant of the Sheriff Samuel Ruffin and Sarah McWilliams. I am afraid that those of us on the Ruffin list have disproved the old Ruthven story as a myth probably started by Edmund Ruffin in his many writings. The Ruffin Archives on the web have all the earlier stuff that the mailing list covered and Virginia has posted the Wills whatever else she could get folks to send in. There is a Ruffin web page also. So who is the father of the William Ruffin in Isle of Wight, VA. please someone send me a link to tell me how this Ruffin is or isn't related to the above Scots. Here is a letter from another relative in response to a previous post I made. Hi Cousin Dale, This is great stuff! My cousin traced our family tree several years ago and for the past few months I have been adding bits here and there through the internet. Her research stopped with William Ruthven/Ruffin born in 1617 in Scotland. I saw a source somewhere that said he was born in Great Britain in 1617. I have been reading today that the Ruthven Raid occured in 1582 so James would have been 16. A William was born abt.1594 and Patrick was born abt. 1597. King James visited the house of Ruthven after having accused Alexander Ruthven of sleeping with his wife. Alexander was found with his sword unsheathed and his brother was stabbed in the back. When James took the throne in England, he tried to have both the younger brothers arrested from school in Cambridge, but William escaped to France and then to Virginia where he changed his name to Ruffin. Patrick spent 22 years in prison. This would have occured in the early 1600's. Did William return to Great Britain to have his son William? This is all so exciting! Also, where can I find the lineage to Robert the Bruce and back to Norway? I have been reading up on him, too, and that is very interesting. robert-the-bruce.com http://www.robert-the-bruce.com/ Thanks for the information so far and any more you can provide. 1. [NCSURRY-L] Samuel A. Ruffin/Samuel H. Ruffin ETC...
2. Hi Peggy and all my distant cousins. Ok...relatives...here we go...lets figure this mess out...There were only so many folks living in the county back then...so we need to draw a map and narrow down the surnames in the surrounding area to find the missing grandmas. Were they Indians? Tuscaroras from Pasquotank co. around Tarboro. Were they Cherokees? What we do know from other sites. We can trace this back to year 700 or so in Norway and Grandfather in Scotland King Robert the Bruce and his queen....then down to 1500's... Lord William Ruthven ~ Nobleman of Perthshire Scotland was a militant Protestant Presbyterian and he kidnapped King James... and was beheaded for treason by Bloody Queen Mary---Mary Queen of Scots. his son Isle of Wight VA, William Ruthven now called Ruffin 1>. William 1| Robert 2 | William 3 | Nathaniel 4 | John, Sr. 5 ? | Samuel 6 | Samuel Henry 7 | Frances Ann Cornelia Ruffin Thomas 8| Charity Bluma Thomas Eveland 9| my mom 10 | me 11 My Samuel Henry Ruffin Born CA. 1830--1831 and Died in Civil war Richmond VA 5--27--1862 grave unknown Rich.VA. I have archive papers stating ...definitely middle initial H. Co. G, 3 North Carolina Art'y (40 State Troops) Confederate. and the register and muster rolls also have middle initial H. I have a feeling that the war dept has these 2 men mixed up or either they died same troop / same day. It could happen??? I do not have any papers for widow's pension for Charity Ann Boon Ruffin Daughtridge. His only wife~my Great, Great Grandmother."Muh" I do have copies of widows pension for the Samuel A & Martha Ann Jordan. Samuel A & Samuel H must have been 1st or 2nd cousins. haven't really determined this yet. I do have photos of Muh and Pap and everyone following. I also have some metal photos of 2 couples...not sure who they are. But my relatives look very much like one of the women. It could be Charity Ann Boons Parents Joshua L. Boon & Easter Gay. It could be Samuel Henry's Parents Samuel Ruffin & "Betsy" Forehand. It could be Martha Ann Susan Ruffin & Elisha Thomas It could be Elisha Thomas' parents Wilson Thomas & Nancy Proctor What year did they make metal pics?? That would be a clue. I don't think it is Samuel Henry & Charity. She doesn't look like Charity...but people change. Charity was short and so is this lady in the pic. But...we don't think it is the same person. Charity Ann Boon Ruffin remarried 2nd husband Joseph Daughtridge nicname"Pap" and had 10 more children. When Samuel H. died their only child was about 18 months old...Frances Ann Cornelia Ruffin, my great grandmother. My Great Grandmother...Frances Ann Cornelia Ruffin b6-15-1864 Nash d6-8-1946 .she married her 1st cousin. James Robert Thomas. Her husbands mother is her aunt (the sister of her daddy). Her mother -in-law is her aunt Martha Ann Susan Ruffin who was married to Elisha Thomas. Martha Ann Susan & Samuel Ruffin are brother & sister. ______________________________________________________This Martha Ann Susan...is not same person as Martha Ann Jordan....let's not get them confused...heaven forbid. My Samuel Henry Ruffin was only married once to Charity Boon Your family Bible has Samuel A. in hospital Richmond May 15, 1862 pneumonia...I guess he could have died on the 27th. Look back at the letter...You say Samuel "H". and Martha were 1st cousins... I think you mean Samuel "A" and Martha Ann Jordan were cousins through the Bailey sisters. ______________________________________________________ My Samuel H. born CA 1830-1831 married Charity 5/30/1858 died according to copies of Civil War Records in my Possession on May 27, 1862 Richmond, VA. His parents are Samuel Ruffin and Elizabeth "Betsy" Forehand . Her father is David Forehand b. 1754 according to what his parents told him. per court papers for Revolutionary War Pension. ? who her mother is...Been told her mother worked on the Forehand Farm and that she was illegitimate...but there is a marriage of a Letha Holland to David. ______________________________________________________ I am not sure if John Ruffin, SR. born CA 1752 & unknown wife were the parents of my Samuel b ca 1790 d 1840 Nash Co.& grandparents of Samuel H. John Sr had 9 children by unknown wife... 2 daughters one named Rachel and one named Elizabeth* see Eliz. will dated 1851 on Crilley's site. that Eliz. Ruffin is the Sister to my Samuel and the Aunt to Samuel Henry ...it is not the will of Samuel Henry's wife Eliz. "Betsy" Forehand as she died prior to Feb. 12, 1844 according to her Orphaned childrens court paper I have. The girls name Rachel shows up 3 times...I wonder if this is Biblical or significant namesake to an older sister-in-laws name Rachel Peele married to her probably much older brother Robert Or could she have been named after aunt-in-law ?Rachel? married to her dad's older brother Stephen or could it be the mystery name of her mother since she is the 1st daughter of the 2 daughters out of 9...7 boys..2 girls. I want to Prove I'm of the John, Sr. line I want to find out who the wife of John Sr. is. I want to find out what Hannah's last name is the wife of Nathaniel. I want to prove when my Samuel Henry Ruffin really died. I want to find his grave up here in Richmond VA if possible. I want to find out what battle he may have died in or what hospital. I want to find out who Stephen was married to. ?? Rachel?? I want to prove that John Sr. is the dad of Samuel and grandfather of Samuel Henry and where is the documentation from to prove it. On my Surname Gay...I want to find out if I descend from John Rolfe and Pocohontas (Matoaka) Chief Powhatans Daughter- Princess of Virginia from Jamestown. HELP>>>> I can't do this alone. Thanks, Dale.
