The best way to find difficult-to-find locations in the US is via this site: http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html This will take you to the form on the US Geological Service server where you can type in the name of a town, stream, valley, etc--along with a state if you have it--and get not only a readout concerning location and altitude, but also information about nearby locations and even a map that you can portray at various scales. I am searching for information on the identity of Elizabeth WILSON who married Surry Co, NC 1833 Jonas REYNOLDS. This was probably the same Jonas REYNOLDS who was a son of George REYNOLDS & Mary HADLEY of the portion of Surry which became Yadkin County. This couple is probably the same Jonas & Elizabeth REYNOLDS, both born abt 1813 in NC, who removed to Georgia after their marriage then to Conway Co, AR by 1860 and finally Bates Co, MO, where Jonas died in 1883 & Elizabeth died in 1886. Known issue were: Jennette, Mary, Martha Ann Elizabeth, Adaline (?), Geoge, James K., William, & Sarah. Does anyone have information on this family? Carol Shrader Virginia Beach, VA
Looking for ancestral material on my great-great-grandfather Henry J. Woods (b ABT 1824) Surry County, NC. According to LDS, Henry's parents were allegedly James and Lavina Woods who were married in Surry County. Henry ended up in Spartanburg County SC and shows up on that county's 1860 Census with a relatively large family. He probably moved to SC in about 1845, as his wife was born in SC and his oldest child is 14, also born in SC. After checking the online Surry County census indexes, I can find only two Woodses: a Lazarus in 1830, and a Michael in 1840. I have no idea if they are related. Does anyone have any ideas as to which Woods line James' family is descended? Thanks for any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico
In the 1790 Census index there is a James Simmons and a William Ervin on page 83. I would like to know what County in NC page 83 is. Can anyone help. Greg Simmons
Our immigrant ancestor, Richard WAINSCOTT, lived first in St. Marys, MD (1728-1735+). By 1745 he had moved to Augusta Co., VA and acquired 200 acres there. About 1750 he moved his family to Anson Co./Rowan Co., NC and settled there. He and his sons owned land near the Yadkin River in what became Surry Co., NC. Richard died there in the 1760s. In the 1780s and 1790s most of his sons and daughters moved their families to KY. As the family spread out, many moved to Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Texas. I have been researching the Wainscott family and preparing to publish a book on the family. If you are one of the many who have sent me information on your part of the Wainscott family, I thank you again and hope you will enjoy seeing the result from all the effort. With this note I am announcing the availability of "The Wainscott (Winscott) Family of Virginia, North Carolina and Kentucky." This is a genealogy book, with the information on descendants presented by Family Tree Maker software. My goal has been in include all descendants of Richard Wainscott, providing dates, places and as much biographical information about each person as I could find. The book is about 270 pages (on 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper) and is softbound. It will be ready for shipment in about 2 weeks. If you would like to order the book, contact me and I will tell you how to order. Sue Streett
IF anyone has an FTM that they could check in the 1830 and 1840 census of SURRY CO> for a JOHNSON, first name maybe McKinney, Kinney or even William M. b. 1798 m. SARAH. They would have probably (4) children at the 1840 census 2 boys between 5-10 and 2 girls less than 5 wife would be about 32. may live in Capt. MEARS district on Beaver Dam Creek. in no one finds this particular person if possible would someone send me a copy of the JOHNSONS in 1830 and 1840 census and I will personally research them all until I eliminate them. I know my GG grandfather was in Surry Co. from 1798 until about 1845 before going to Georgia. It is possible he may have changed his name sometime. It is also believed that he was part Cherokee indian. The JOHNSON features certainly would substantiate that claim. any help would be appreciated tks jcjohnson of alex.,va
Hello Surry County folks! I'm looking for my Surry County ancestors. I found an IGI marriage record for William LAMBERT and Katharin LEWIS on April 29, 1831 in Surry Co, NC. I believe Katharin LEWIS LAMBERT died sometime between 1844 and 1850 in NC. This is what I have so far: William LAMBERT b abt 1811 NC Katharin b ? wife Lewis b abt 1832 NC son Nancy b abt 1834 NC dau Anderson b abt 1838 NC son Judah b abt 1840 NC son William b abt 1842 NC son Andrew b abt 1844 NC son William and his children appear in the Jackson Co, TN census in 1850 with William being married to his second wife Elizabeth. I'm assuming his first wife Katherin LEWIS Lambert died after the birth of their son Andrew in 1844 and before William and his children migrated to TN. by 1850. I'd really like to find out if there are any Surry Co. records available on this family, what part of the county they lived, who Katharin and William's parents were, if there are any church records, tax records on this family. If anyone has any ideas they'd like to share, I'd love to hear from them. Thanks so much, Jan from Illinois

I am having lots of trouble finding info on my GG grandfather who I think may have been McKINNEY "Kinney" JOHNSON b. 1798 Surry Co., NC m. Sarah ??????? He owned land on Beaver Dam Creek in 1835 tax tithes. May have been brother to CALVIN, KIMBRO, CHARLES and DRURY as they owned land bordering his on the tax table. I recently purchased a marriage record for Surry Co. 1783-1868 and could not find the name in it. It is possible that he could have been married in either STOKES, WILKES, or YADKIN Co. I would appreciate it if anyone that has a marriage book for these three counties to look for the above names for me. I suspect they were married about 1829-31 as their first child was born in 1832. They had a son named HARDY, the fact my GG grandfather was named McKinney leads me to believe these two other families fit into the picture somewhere His name is listed two ways in the census for Surry Co. one as McKinney and another as Kinney. The name WILLIAM has been very prevelent throughout the descendant branches also. I thank you in advance for your help. jcjohnson of alexandria,va

Forgive me for reproducing from a book which I do not know the name of. This photocopy was in genealogy info. I inherited. Maybe someone will benefit from it..It is quite lengthy so I will not post all @ once. Here goes as promised earlier: contributed by [email protected] from legacy left to her by her Aunt Harriett Eveland Powell originally of Rocky Mount, N.C. The Gay family is found in the Channel Islands after the Norman Conquest. They located later in Kent and Devon. The Gays were shown in the Visitations of Kent in 1674. (P. 53) Their arms were: "Gules crusily or 3 lions rampant argent." Vivian's "Devon", p.392, has a large chart of this family with arms: "Or, on a fesse sable between three escollops azure, six Losenges enjoined argent." Henry (1) Gay, first of his family in Virginia, was a headright of James Long who patented 300 acres on the western Branch of the Nansemond River, in Nansemond County, Feb. 8, 1663, for the transportation of six persons among whom was Henry Gay (C.P. 492). There was a vast trade in headrights. Some of the most prominent people in Virginia sold their own headrights. The Nansemond County records were destroyed so we have to rely upon records of adjacent counties for information. Henry Gay, on April 22, 1669, received a grant from Sir William Berkeley, Gov., of 400 acres of land in the Upper Parish of Nansemond for the transportation of 8 persons consisting of the headrights of 4 children assigned by Thomas Cullen and Andrew Clawson and four other persons whose names seem to be indistinct to the person who copied them. The grant was adjacent to the lands of James Collins and Phillip Dewell (G.B. 6-242). Henry Gay died about 1688 for in 1689 Robert Lawrence married his widow, Joane Gay. (D.B. 1- I 6); (Great Bk. 2-59; C.M. -33) On May 1, 1689, Henry Gay II, son of Henry I, made an agreement with Lewis Brian (Bryan) as follows: "Lewis Brian of Nansemond stands indebted to HENRY GAY of Isle of Wight, Feb. 1, 1688-89. Conditions are that Lewis Brian will not molest Robert Lawrence where he now lives on land fromerly belonging to HENRY GAY,decd., from the main river up to Burnt House Branch. Henry Gay also stands indebted to Lewis Brian and promises to pay in tobacco. Conditions are that Henry Gay will not molest Lewis Brian in possession of land adjacent to John Brian Sr. "May 1, 1689, Wits.: John Brian, James Daughter (17C-601) Robert Lawrence, step father of Henry Gay, made his will April 20, 1720, probated Jan. 23, 1720/21 (badly torn).
