Hi everyone, I have discovered a 17 year old letter from a distant cousin which claims that my Bryants and Baileys came from Surry Co. NC and I am trying to obtain proof. If any of you recognize this information, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. My eldest proven ancestor, Gamaliel Bryant, is said in this letter to have been born in 1813 in Surry Co. NC, son of Alexander Bryant and Nancy Bailey. Nancy is said to be the daughter of Gamaliel Bailey and Elizabeth Johnson (dau. of Alexander Johnson). The letter says she finds Alexander Bryant in records of 1804 as witness to the will of Peter Bryant but not later. The writer presumes that Peter is Alexander's father. Gamaliel Bailey is said in the letter to be the son of Major Andrew Bailie of Ireland. Andrew supposedly came to Ft. Dobbs in 1756 and in 1762 began acquiring lands. Andrew died around 1776 per this letter. Gamaliel Bailey supposedly had a plantation on both sides of the Dan River that runs close to Mt. Airy where this Peter Bryant appears to have owned land. In my own research, I first find my Gamaliel Bryant in the 1840 Sevier Co. TN census married with children, 1850 in Cherokee Co. NC, 1860 in Monroe Co. TN, 1870 & 1880 in AR. He died in 1895 in AR. Census records indicate his state of birth as NC or TN. We have a journal kept by his granddaughter which has his exact date of birth as 2 May 1813, and a notation that his father was E. Alexander Bryant from "Irland". Names common in this family are William, Franklin, Johnson, Matthew, Selethia/Saletha, Elisha, Nancy, Levi, Simeon/Simon, Gamaliel, and Andrew. Gamaliel Bryant's first wife was Winifred (Apsala) Adams, dau. of Johnson Adams of Sevier Co. TN. She died and by 1854 he was married to Rebecca Dobkins, dau. of Johnson Dobkins of Sevier Co. TN. He had children by both wives. Gamaliel Bryant became a Baptist preacher sometime in the 1840's and according to the letter performed some marriages in Surry Co. NC about 1854/1855. In most records referring to him as a preacher he is referred to as G. Briant/Bryant or Elder G. Bryant/Briant. He was the active in the Baptist Church of Christ at Liberty in Cherokee Co. NC and I have copies of church minutes that show he and his extended family were excluded from the church in July 1853 "for disorderly conduct" and "leaving the church in disorder"...probably arguments over doctrine. He went on to found churches in AR in later years. Does anyone have access to any marriage records, will books, tax lists etc. of Surry Co. in which you might do a lookup for me on these Baileys and/or Bryants? Would sure appreciate the help. Thanks in advance for your time and assistance! Lorien Gunsallus

As those of you who have suffered through my innumerable queries for the last year or so realize, I am quite serious about tracing my ancestry. However, I have exhausted the resources available here in New Mexico, and seem to be at a dead end with the queries and other online databases. I have previously placed a reward notice. It worked. I found the individual for whom I was searching in about two days, and the researcher received a cashier's check. As I understand it, the search was not that difficult as they had access to relevant archival material and considerably more experience in genealogical research. Accordingly, I thought I would try it once more and am offering a $100 reward to the first researcher who can identify the parents of my great-great-grandfather Henry J. Woods who was born (depending upon which census one believes) in either NC or SC in about 1826. On the 1860 Spartanburg County SC Census, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Father: Henry J. Woods (b. 1826) various censuses indicate both a NC or SC birth Wife: Mary H. Woods (b SC 1822) (possibly a Lynch?) Children: Nathan J Woods (b SC 1851) Lynch E. Woods (b SC 1846) female (perhaps a previous Woods-Lynch marriage?) James H. Woods (b SC 1848) (my great-grandfather) John B. Woods (b SC 1849) William B. Woods (b SC 1850) Thomas J. Woods (b SC 1854) Luther L. Woods (b SC 1856) Margaret C. Woods (b SC 1858) Robert H. Woods (b SC 1859) It should be noted that the LDS entry on Henry's family is incorrect...possibly due to the fact it was evidently taken from the 1860 Spartanburg County Census which is fairly illegible. The children Luther and Margaret were identified from later Censuses, specifically the 1870 and 1880 Greene County TN rolls. Regarding Henry's parents, the clues, I suppose, lie somewhere in either North or South Carolina birth, deed, probate or census records. However, as I posted last night, I personally feel -- but cannot make the connection -- that Henry may well be the son of one of the following Woods families that show up on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Spartanburg County SC Censuses: 1. James Woods b. 1788 - wife Rachel (Hawkins?) b. 1797 SC. James and Rachel had at least four children: Susan b. 1829; Nathan Richmond b. 22 Sept 1831; Elizabeth b. 1833; and William James (James William) b. 4 Oct 1839. 2. William Woods b. 1780 - wife Jane (Babb?) b 1785. William and Jane (according to LDS-consider the source) had the following children: Clarissa b. 1808; Abner b. 1809; Susan b. 1812; Hugh b. 1814; Kellet b 1816; Larissa b. 1820; Polly b. 1879; Nancy b. 1824; William b. 1827; Martha b. 1829; Martin b. 1831; and Harvey Harney b. 1833. 3. John Woods b. 1787 - wife Agnes (unknown) b. 1790. 4. Robert Woods b. 1788 - wife Jane b. 1790. I have not yet determined if James, William, Robert and John are brothers. Nor do I have a clue as to their parent' identity. And again, this is just a guess on my part. Obviously, due to the similarities of names, it would appear that Henry would most likely descend from James and Rachel (there was even a Nathan in that family). Further, my great-grandfather James H. Woods b. 1848, named his first born daughter Rachel...but perhaps this is merely a coincidence. James ended up marrying an Elizabeth Fox (daughter of Isaac Fox) and living in Greene County TN. If you are interested in this project, or have the relevant information, please contact me. However, aside from this entry, and as a matter of courtesy to others, please E-mail me directly do not post your replies to this list. If requested, I will then provide you my telephone numbers and addresses, as well as any other material you feel is necessary to verify the legitimacy of my offer. In any event, I hope this will spark some interest from an individual who feels they might just be up to the challenge of finding Henry's parents and receive $100 for their efforts. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico Please Note: I will, of course, verify the information.

I am interested in hearing from anyone researching the above families. I am descended from Elijah Gillespie's son Alexander/Ellic, from James Wilcher Cook, from William "Billy" Key, Elizabeth Dunnigan, Andreas Volk, Rev. Andrew Brickle, and finally John William Bryant. These families were VERY prolific and I have quite a list of names of relations. I will be happy to share what info I have at my earliest convenience. K. My Woods query for the weekend: Does anyone have a clue as to what family a William Woods, born ABT 1792 in NC descends? William shows up on the 1860 Spartanburg County SC census (Fort Prince P.O.) with a wife named Elizabeth born ABT 1791, also in NC. There are no Woodses whatsoever on the 1850 Spartanburg County Census, and the only Woods "head of household" on the 1860 Spartanburg County Census are this William, and my elusive gggrandfather Henry J. Woods (b NC 1826). As both William and Henry, seemingly from nowhere, appear in Spartanburg SC in time for the 1860 Census, and they both were born in NC, perhaps they are somehow connected? Looking for information on an Alexander Woods who married a Mary Robinson (this might be Robison). They supposedly had five sons and one daughter. The only one I've found reference to is a John Woods (1795-1852) who married a Sarah Ann Lynch. There is an Alexander Woods on the 1840 Orange County NC Census, however I am unsure if it is the same individual, or perhaps one of Alexander and Mary's other unknown sons. My great-great-grandfather Henry J Woods (b. NC 1826) named his first daughter "Lynch," according to the 1860 Spartanburg County SC Census. As this appears to be an unusual first name for a daughter, I feel there may be a real possibility that I have finally narrowed the field, and that Henry could be the son of John Woods and Sarah Ann Lynch. In addition to the above questions, I would be particularly interested in determining who Alexander's parents might be. Thanks again for any help or suggestions in sorting out this family Brett F.
