    3. Soon after the Rev War closed, the people declared their independence from NC and set up a State Government of their own. It was named The state of Franklin, after Benjamin Franklin. John Sevier was elected Governor of the new state. BUT the new state had no gold or silver to back what they used for money. They tried paper money for a while but that soon fell by the wayside. Then they used animal skins, but it was hard to carry a skin for a dollar bill and what about change?? SO-NC sent a regiment of soldiers into TN , took John Sevier prisoner, took him to Morganton,NC for trial. A few days later, the trial was beginning and a strange thing happened. Some friends of Sevier's walked into the courtroom, snapped their fingers in the faces of the judge and jury, seized the prisoner and took him back to TN.---leaving the court and the crowd gazing in amazement. On account of his bravery in the Revolution,Sevier was allowed to go free and was never afterwards brought to trial. In 1796 TN was admitted into the UNION as a state. John Sevier was the first Governor. A lot of this disputed land was given as bounty land to the Rev War soldiers,I think, and that is why there are NC land records in TN. How's that ? Where can you find information on these land grants. Laura >> Hi Laura, TN was NC until 1796 statehood. For some years after that grants issued by NC were honored with land given in TN. I don't know the particulars of the agreement between the states but I believe that honoring these grants was part of the arrangement. There was some confusion in transition and I have read that it was several years before TN took full control of all.. Some ancestors of mine born after 1796 in TN who are found on census as born in NC (no TV/radio was problem on the frontier when I suppose making for slow transfer of information??). I would think it safe to check in both states. There is a recent book set (v1 and v2 according to alpha of surname) TN Land Grants by Sistler. I would also like to know what's available for NC on land grant records. Perhaps they also have a published source. Are you looking for any name in particular? KATS

    2. This line was given to me over the phone July 1999 by LENA Pittman Robbins about her Ruffin line. Lena's mother was Leona Ruffin Pittman... Lena's mother married a Pittman. Leona Ruffin's mother Mary Elizabeth was maiden name Pittman....not sure what the relation is there....but LENA said it was a different line of Pittmans. Lena had 3 brothers Willie, Linwood, & Jack Pittman. Lena Pittman Robbins maternal grandparents & Leona Ruffin Pittman's parents>>> Jack Ruffin....(she only knows he was always called Jack) - Leona's father (buried somewhere near Rt. 1 Cokertown Road - Whitaker's, N.C.) m. Mary Elizabeth Pittman (Pittman is maiden name) - Leona's mother Leona Ruffin Pittman (buried @ Bentley Church)----LENA's mother Wylie Ruffin (thinks she has a picture--buried in Goldsboro, N.C. -mother's brother.. Mary Ruffin (thinks she has a picture--buried @ Tarboro)-mother's sister Mattie Ruffin (buried @ Tarboro)-mother's sister Dora Ruffin (thinks she has a picture--buried @ Tarboro)-mother's sister I don't know who they married. Wylie Ruffin had 1 boy May (?nickname?) unusual name...they called him May. Wylie Ruffin had 2 girls Mary & Margaret. Lena's brother Willie Pittman married Nora Lee. they had 3 boys & 1 girl Margaret. 2 boys died.....don't know which two...not sure...but I have 2 names written down Raymond & Roger...not sure if they are the ones that died...my notes aren't clear. Margaret Pittman married a __??__ Twisdale. Margaret is the mother of the twins I know of William Earl Twisdale & William Lamb Twisdale--both twins are actually named William this is according to my uncle..who was trying to make things clearer for me.

    1. [NCSURRY] Visits to Surry County
    2. Surry Community College in Dobson has a good sized local history area that contains some local and area history books as well as area family histories. They have microfilm and microfiche records from the local clerk's office and register of deeds office. They have copy machines and will usually give you change if you need it. The personnel are very helpful. Their hours are Monday - Thursday 7:30am to 9pm, Friday 7:30am to 4:30pm. Unfortunately they are closed on the weekends. The web page is http:/www.surry.cc.nc.us/ I have also had good luck with the register of deeds office. k. Titus

    2. Greetings I'm a new subscriber, from the Des Moines, Iowa area. I'm researching my CUMMING/CUMMINS ancestors who, I believe, came from Surry County--this would be prior to 1770. My ancestral grandfather, George Cumming was born 1771 and left there abt 1790 to go to Ireland to claim a land inheritance in County Down. I believe he married before leaving there. I don't know his father's name but I believe he married a woman whose surname was either BELL or CHAMBERS; I'd like very much to hear from anyone with ancestors named CUMMING-CUMMINGS-BELL-CHAMBERS. George's wife was born in Ireland. This couple, with their children remained in County Down until 1802, when they removed to NY City. I have information on this line, but need their NC roots. 3. Amy, Your best bet is Surry County Community College. It is also located in Dobson. Best to call first (don't have the #) and check for the summer hours. Also, the Surry Co. Gen Soc had planned to computerize a great deal of local data. I don't know what progress has been made, but it was intended that the computer be located at the college. There is a new room dedicated to genealogy since my last visit there. I would be interested in learning what you find.
