    1. [NCSURRY] Moore Family Reunion
    2. Richard W. Kesler
    3. It may be of interest to Surry Co. listers that a Moore Family Reunion was held on last Saturday, October 16th. It was headquartered at the William Alfred Moore House in Mt. Airy. William Alfred Moore was a grandson of Rod(e)ham Moore who was the first of his line to be buried in a grave yard which is located in Patrick Co., VA on a slope overlooking the Ararat River and the intervening bottom land about four miles above the VA/NC state line. Highlinght of the occasion was the dedication of a new granite headstone for Rod(e)ham Moore. Donations were made to cover the cost of erecting similar headstones for his son William Moore and William's wife Jane Hanby, and for William and and Jane's son Harden H. Moore and Harden's wife Ann Scales. Some 70 descendants of Rod(e)ham Moore including their spouses were in attendance from the twelve different states. The writer also visited the cemetary at Hunter's Chapel Church which is located in Patrick Co. on Rte. 773 about a mile south of the Rod(e)ham Moore grave yard. In it are buried Harden's and Ann's daughter Elizabeth L. Moore and Elizabeth's husband Nathaniel Henry Scales, and Elizabeth and Nathaniel's son Robert Richard Scales and Willie Cordelia Moore. Willie C. was daughter of William T. Moore and Paulina Agnes Clement. William T. was another child of Harden and Ann. All of the persons mentioned above were my ancestors. Robert Richard Scales and Willie C. Moore were my grandparents. Anyone who thinks that he or she may be a descendant of Rod(e)ham Moore, kindly contact me at my e-mail address. State your name and possible connection. Richard K.

No, Nancy, you are not out of line. Especially if the other person has equal access. But if you are going - and have told others, they may have considered this information as something you are willing to share. I'm often the one who must ask for help and lookups when I get stuck and can't find what I need on the net or by regular mail. That's because I live in Norway and my family and ancestors have been in the U.S. since the 1600's. But I try to even it out by supplying copies of documents and other information I already have with those who need it. Grandpa created beautiful works of art - inlaid tables and chests. And he never sold anything. He gave it away. He just asked that the receiver "paid" for the article by performing an act of kindness to someone they meet along their way. If you feel it's too much, or it is an imposition, don't advertise your plans or please just tell them how you feel. I would feel terrible if I later learned that someone felt "used" or "imposed upon" in order to meet my request, but hadn't told me. Better at they tell me they are too busy or don't have the time. I think most people feel the same. One last thought: When I was young - and had a lot of questions - I never got an answer before I tried to find the answer by myself! Eventually, I found out that looking for information was much more rewarding than having it "served up". Maybe a good motto for all of us would be "Look first - ask later". 2. Mike, Just a quick note here. Noticed the Taliaferro surname in your post below. I am looking hard for Harris and Blackwell in Surry Co., NC and have seen the Taliaferro surname many times in deeds, marriage bonds, and court papers etc. The time frame is from the eariest records I can find (1770's) to about 1810. I seem to remember a Joseph Taliafero for some reason. This all from LDS tapes I checked out. I have no Taliaferros in my line but since you seem to be interested in the surname I thought maybe this note might help. People who I know are neighbors don't seem to be listed near each other on the census and people with the same surname ( and I don't have a clue who they are) seem to be on the same page. Is this census by any chance alphbetical rather than by order of residence? On another note, I have a "cousin " thinking I ought to send them copies of some estate papers I got from NC archives. 3. Hi All, I'm trying to track down Harris families. What I can tell you is that my Robert Harris was born 1795, in VA? We are told that his father is Robert Harris from NC....at one time we had thought Mecklenberg Co. NC but I've been unable to find the connection. I've found some other Robert's in different counties of NC and I'm trying to follow up on them. My Robert married Sarah (Sally) Carson in Rockbridge Co. VA in 1818. They had seven children. Hope to hear from someone that may know of this Robert Harris family. 1. [NCSURRY] SIMMONS: ISHAM, THOMAS AND ZILPHA
    2. Gerald S. Pierce
    3. I am looking for leads connected to ISHAM SIMMONS, his son THOMAS SIMMONS and Thomas's wife ZILPHA. It is likely, but not certain, that related families will be found in SURRY and ROCKINGHAM COUNTIES, NORTH CAROLINA, and nearby counties in SOUTHERN VIRGINIA. There may be a MONROE COUNTY, KENTUCKY, connection. They certainly had connections in HOWARD AND LINN COUNTIES, MISSOURI. THOMAS SIMMONS, born in Virginia, probably about 1795, was awarded a Missouri land grant of 160 acres as a bounty for his service in the War of 1812 He is said to have been among the first settlers in Prairie Township of HOWARD COUNTY, MISSOURI, settling there between 1819 and 1825. The name of one Thomas Simons (sic) appeared in the 1830 federal census of Howard County. In 1840 he and is family still lived in Howard County. In 1850 Thomas Simmons, then 55 (born about 1795 in Virginia), was living in LINN COUNTY, MISSOURI, in the household of Jesse L. Baskett, an in-law. Thomas died before 1860. His wife, ZILPHA SIMMONS, was born about 1796 in North Carolina. She died in Howard County, Missouri, in February, 1860. I know nothing more of her. It is known that THOMAS SIMMONS'S father was ISHAM SIMMONS, whose will was filed in Howard County in 1838 (though I am not certain that Isham lived in that county at the time of his death). He is known to me only from his will. As to the family, North Carolina and Virginia connections are known from the reported birthplaces of THOMAS and ZILPHA SIMMONS. ISHAM SIMMONS appears to have had similar connections. The name of an ISHAM SIMMONS is found in the 1790 census of ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. The 1800 census found ISHAM SIMMONS in SURRY COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA. From the census it may be inferred that Isham and his wife were born about 1775. A young son in the family was probably Thomas. While others named Simmons were found in Surry County in 1810 and 1820, Isham was not found. Perhaps he lived in Virginia (where the censuses are mostly lost). In 1820, there was an ISHAM SIMMONS who lived in MONROE COUNTY, KENTUCKY, along the southern border of that state. In 1830, an "ISOM" SIMMONS lived in Tompkinsville Township of in the same county. ISHAM was not found in Missouri, and it may be that the Kentucky listing was for this Simmons. The name of ISHAM SIMMONS has been found in HOWARD COUNTY, MISSOURI, only in connection with the will filed there in 1838. I'll appreciate any information that may be offered. Gerald Pierce

    3. In Grayson county marriage bonds there is a Lucinda Hanks and David Davis, married by William Carrico on 1 Oct 1835( this was a minister's return, bond not found. A William Hanks is shown as the step-father on the bond for his step daughter Sally Carrico when she married John M. Fulks on Apr 30, 1822. Do you have the sketch on joshua Hanks who was the father of your William? There is quite a bit about this Hanks family in the Book Caroll 1765-1815, the Settlements by Perry Alderman. Joshua was a Quaker and provided land for the Quaker meeting house and is buried there. In Joshua's will he names William, mary, Nancy, Lydia, Patience, Rhoda, Thursa, Ruth and Susanna. It does not mention Rebecca Carrico who had died years earlier. Apparently several of his married Moores, Nancy, Lydia, Thomas. There were about l5 children in his family. William hanks who died in 1868 was married four times, but it doesn't list any of his wifes. I will be happy to copy this and snail mail it to you if you will contact me privately.
