Nancy Mathias, b. abt. 1801-1805 in NC - no marriage date, but first child born in 1821. Samuel Axsom and Peter Norman migrated to Monroe Co., Indiana, in the 1830s - Samuel by 1837 - Peter probably earlier. I suspect that Winifred Matthews and Nancy Mathias were sisters. There were other Mathis\Mathias family members in Monroe County who were born in NC. Is anyone researching a Mathis\Mathias\Matthews family which included Winnie and\or Nancy? There may have been a brother named James. Does anyone know the name of the parents of Peter Norman? Thank you, Norma Axsom Zanetti

    1. [NCSURRY] Robert N. Lowe md. Lucretia Sawyers
    2. Ruth Bloom
    3. My ggrandfather, Robert N. Lowe and his wife Lucretia Sawyers are in the Surry County census records from 1830 until the late 1800's. During that time Robert lived in Westfield, farming and, according to family legend, teaching school. He was buried in the Quaker cemetery at Westfield, following his death in 1877. I am told he kept his teaching certificate active, renewing it every year. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I might find a copy of this certificate? My grandfather, Jesse Lowe, Robert's son, farmed at Long Hill in Surry County from about 1870 until his death in 1911. Family history has it that he donated the land for a church although he never joined one himself, being unable to determine which one was right. Stoney Creek Primitive Baptist Church now stands very close to where Jesse's farm was located. Is there some way I can find out if this is the church built on the land he donated? Any help or information about either of these families will be appreciated. Robert's origins have continued to elude me as have Lucretia Sawyer's. Thanks in advance. Ruth Lowe Bloom

    3. Evelyn, I am decended from William THORNTON and Sarah ARVIN of Surry Co., NC. They lived in Surry Co., NC from 1700's (middle) to 1820 's. They had 10 children. I have lost contact with them after the Father and Mother died. William died in 1820 and Sarah sometime in 1821. Sarah lived in Iredell Co., NC with her daughter who married a SHELLY. Please write and let me know what dates you are researching for your family of THORNTON. I notice you are spelling the last name different. Is it THORNTON you are researching? Also, have seen an article in the Yadkin Co., NC Heritage Book that my THORNTON line family surname was originally spelled FARRINGTON and only on legal documents it was spelled THORNTON. I cannot prove this is true as I have not been able to find any living relatives from this family to confirm. I have been searching this familiy for over 20 years. The surnames that are included in my THORNTON lines from this William and Sarah are: ARVIN,ATHAN,COLVARD,SHELLY/SHELLEY,MORELAND,SLATER,SEAT/FULCHER(2wives), CHILDRESS.
