Some of you are related to the Kerr family of early surry county. Many of you have alexander Kerr, Jr. who was enumerated in Surry in 1810, and then "disappeared" as dying in Surry shortly after that 1810 census. He did die, but not in Surry. Alexander Kerr and Leannah Jarvis were married in Surry co 8 Oct 1809. She was probably the dau. of John Jarvis. Alexander and Leannah had 3 children, not just the two listed in Alexander, Sr.'s estate settlement: William and Mahala (perhaps Martha) who would have been born between 1810 and 1812 and Levi jarvis Kerr who was born in TN in 1814. Alexander and his brother John Kerr served in the 3rd Regiment West Tennessee Militia Infantry in the War of 1812. This unit was raised from the Overton TN area. Also serving in the unit from Surry were Kendall Savage,(who was married to Leannah's sister, Sarah) and Bennett Jarvis.(Probably a bro to Leannah and Sarah) John Jarvis (probably another brother) served in a different company of the regiment. This unit fought at New Orleans under Jackson, and while it did not suffer heavy battle losses, they lost many in camp from disease after the battle. Alexander Kerr and Kendall Savage both died in New Orleans in the weeks after the battle. Both Leannah Jarvis Kerr and Sarah Jarvis Kendall received bounty land from their husband's service. Although I have not researched it, Bennett and John Jarvis both died about 1815, and it is highly possible that they died at New Orleans also, considering the heavy losses from disase in the TN units. Although Surry County marriage records are considered to be fairly complete, in a letter concering Leannah Kerr's pension application, the clerk of Surry County states that about some of the files in his office were "removed and confused", and he beleived many of the marriage bonds to be lost. this was an 1852 letter, and he placed the losses as dating about 25 yrs. previously. The Gen. Soc. of White County TN will be publishing an article I wrote up about this with more information. It should go out in the April edition of their journal. All you folks who are requesting look-ups of marriages: are you aware you can borrow the book on interlibrary loan? I've borrowed it several times, and copied out the pages with the surnames I'm interested in. It is available from the Mid-continet Public Library in Independence, MO. All 4 of their catalogs are now on-line. They should be publishing another supplement at the end of this yr. Please see their URL:http://www.mcpl.lib.mo.us/ge/heartland/ they also had the Surry Civil War Book. Nancy __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have info on a number of Staffords who lived in Stokes County during the period 1800-1850. Do you have more info on the GEORGE STAFFORD you are looking for ? His parents, siblings or children ? Hopefully, I may be able to connect him to the STAFFORD lines I have been working on for the past twenty years. These lines apparently originated in Maryland/Delaware and migrated to North Carolina (e.g., Randolph, Guilford) prior to settling in Stokes County. Later generations settled in several areas located in Forsyth County, e.g., South Forks Township and Kernersville. I am also searching for info on JOHN STAFFORD, SAMUEL and GABRIEL STAFFORD who are listed in a number of Stokes County census, i.e., JOHN is listed in the 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 enumerations; SAMUEL is listed in the 1810 and 1840 enumerations; GABRIEL is listed in only in the 1820 census. I have info that JOHN owned land in the "Salem and South Forks District/ Township" areas --whereas SAMUEL owned land in the "Peters Creek" and the "Quaker Gap(p)" areas . Any info you may have on JAMES, SAMUEL and/or GABRIEL, including their descendants would be appreciated.

One of my ancestors is Alexander Kerr who died in Surry ca. 1829. His wife's name was definetly Rebecca (various spellings) and some give her surname as Gourley. I have yet to see an actual(prmary) document that verifies this information. Can anyone steer me to the source on this? Nancy _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi. I'm new to this list and looking for the family of John W. Scott (b. 1844 Patrick Co.) and Sarah Jane Massey (b. 1838 Patrick Co.). Their children were John Wellington Scott (d. 1903 in Mt. Airy), Mollie J. (m. J.R. Gwynn of Surry Co.), DeSoto, Sally & Woot "Jerry". I think they moved to Surry Co from Patrick Co in the very early 1900's. I have no proof that they were all in Surry Co, but I believe that John Wellington Scott & DeSoto Scott were buried together (she d. 1908) (someone sent me a reference to a John W. & DeSoto Scott who are buried together, but he didn't know the cemetery name - the dates for John W. are correct however) and I know that he was buried in Surry Co. because my grandparents found his grave years ago - again, no cemetery name. DeSoto was unmarried, so I am theorizing that she would not have been in Surry Co. after her brother died unless someone else in her family was there. John Wellington's wife (Martha "Mattie" Foley) was newly pregnant (just a few weeks) with their first child (Vivian Wellington Scott - my grandfather) when he died and Mattie did not move back to Patrick Co (where she had lots of family) or to Ohio (where her parents were) until after the birth. Again, a theory, but I can't imagine that she wouldn't have moved in with family during her first pregnancy. So, I really believe that her in-laws ( her mother-in-law was also her aunt), the John W. Scott family, was in Surry Co also. This is difficult to keep track of and I apologize for that. There's no good way to word it! Kathy Kuzas
