Cross-posted to PATTERSON-L Was up in Surry County this afternoon looking for a small cemetary plot of my ancestors PATTERSON. My sister in Springfield, GA assured me her directions were correct, but I could not locate the place even after stopping and getting some directions. Was looking for the graves of William C. PATTERSON and his wife Mariah Caroline MAINARD (my ancestry and # 4 and #5 below). The directions said to go west 5 miles on Hwy 268 from Pilot Mtn, turning left on state road 2044, then the first left after passing Hills Grove Baptist Church. From this cemetary, which is supposed to be on a hill and visible to SR 2044, the following individuals graves are supposed to be located there: 1. William Thomas PATTERSON (b. February 19, 1880, d. September 15, 1897) 2. Columbia Augusta PATTERSON (b. October 12, 1867, d. December 12, 1903) 3. Malinda J. PEELE (b. May 17, 1870, d. February 10, 1898) 4. W. C. PATTERSON (b. September 5, 1810, d. December 24, 1891) 5. Caroline PATTERSON (b. June 15, 1812, d. January 1, 1871) 6. Virginia E. PATTERSON (b. March 31, 1878, d. April 7, 1879) 7. Johnnie A. PATTERSON (b. February 15, 1882, d. November 14, 1883) 8. Nancy J. PATTERSON (b. December 21, 1853, d. January 9, 1895, who was the wife of S. A. PATTERSON) 9. Martha PATTERSON (b. April 22, 1886, d. August 26, 1906, who was the daughter of S. A. and Nancy PATTERSON) My sister tells me most of the other graves are made of field stones and not easily recognizable. Has anyone been to this small family cemetary, or can verify the location? Having located some of my ancestors graves at Copeland Baptist Church including William Henry Harrison PATTERSON and his son Samuel Martin PATTERSON and wife Mary Alice LOGAN, I am trying to validate the burial of others in my lineage. Anyone with information or marking on this cemetary would be appreciated. Bob Carter Greensboro, NC

In April 2000 the University of North Carolina Press will publish a book entitled "The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: Western North Carolina in the Civil War," by John C. Inscoe and Gordon B. McKinney (both professors of history). Advance notice says that the book is 480 pages, and costs $39.95 (cloth). ISBN:0-8078-2544-1. "From the valleys of the French Broad and Catawba Rivers to the peaks of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the people of Western North Carolina responded to the war in dramatically different ways. Men and women, masters and slaves, planters and yeomen, soldiers and civilians, Confederates and Unionists, bushwhackers and home guardsmen, Democrats and Whigs--all their stories are told here," says the flier from the UNC Press. I have not seen the book yet myself, but it might be some of you would like to read or have your local library order it. I am not in any way connected to UNC. I do not know whether it will be also issued in paperback form. Betty Pace ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Malinda, Remember that the boundary of Wilkes Co. in 1790 was much different than the current day boundary. The County of Wilkes included current day Ashe and current day Alleghany back in 1790. The following was posted by Judie Schatz on Sun, 05 Mar 2000 on the Surry County GenConnect Query Forum: - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname: FANNING Looking for descendents of THOMAS FANNING and wife SARAH. They appear in the 1790 Surry Co. Census with a total of 5 in household. Believe this to be the same THOMAS FANNING that was listed as a taxpayer in Montgomery Co., VA, in the 1780s up to 1787. August 1788 Isaac Copeland ordered overseer of newly marked road from Fishers River to Bull Run. August 1789 ordered hands of John and William Howard, John Paget, THOMAS FANNON, John Smallwood and James Takewell to work under Isaac Copeland, road overseer. Can someone tell me exactly where this road was located? In the 1805 will of Mrs. Jane __ Howard Allen, she lists all of her Howard children including ANN HOWARD FANNING. Who was Ann's husband? Have never been able to find THOMAS FANNING in another census anywhere though have been told that 3 of his younger children married in late 1810's in Knox Co., TN, 3 Swadley siblings. Any help most appreciated. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- Any replies should be sent to the Surry County GenConnect Query Forum [<http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NC/Surry>] . --

Hi, all, Trying to sort out several JENNINGS men in the NWNC and SWVA areas who seem very likely to all be related. --- Hoping someone can help identify the approximate area of Capt. JUDD's District on the 1787 Wilkes Tax List (some areas of Surry Co., such as the Mitchell River Community, were recorded in Wilkes Co. at times, for some unknown reason...Since I don't know where JUDD's District was, it is possible that the persons listed in it actually resided in Surry.) John "JENINS" owned and lived on 159+ acres in JUDD's 1787 District, and also recorded there was John's apparent son?, Luke JENINS, with no land, but 1 white poll that year. John JENNINGS [apparently the same man] also owned 300 acres in the Mitchell River Community of Surry in 1790, recorded on the Wilkes Tax List as Capt. HARDIN's District. John and Luke JENINGS were recorded in the Fourth Company of Wilkes Co. in 1790; John's household consisted of 3 white males over 16 yrs., and 2 white females; Luke's household consisted of 1 white male over 16 yrs., 3 white males under 16 yrs., and 1 white female. These JENNINGS men had neighbors: William SMITH, John SMITH, John ROBINS [ROBBINS[, James SERTAIN [SERTIN], David OWIN (OWEN, OWENS], John FORESTER, Mike MCDOWELL, Robert HALL, Andrew VANNOY, Henry PUMPHY [HUMPHREY?], William VEARS [MEARS?], Silas ATKINS, John HALL, Jesse HALL, Dicey RAY and Sarah RHODES. Does anyone have any deeds or other documents for these two JENNINGS? Anyone have any deeds for their neighbors that show where any of these people lived? --- And, of course, there was James JENNINGS of 1790 Surry, who m.Martha "Patsy" MCBRIDE, dau. of William MCBRIDE [d. 1818, Surry Co.]; at least some of their children reportedly moved to Georgia. I know that this James was roughly contemporary with Luke. Does anyone know if he was John's son or brother, or who this James' father was? --- Elijah JINNINS was recorded in Ashe Co. in 1800, with a household of 1 males 26-45 yrs., 2 males 0-9 yrs., 2 males 10-16 yrs., 3 females 0-9 yrs., and 1 female 26-45 yrs. [This list was alphabetized, so is not useful in placing Elijah with neighbors.] --- In 1810, E. GINNING had a household in J. BOND's Division of Ashe Co. that consisted of 1 male over 45 yrs., 1 male 26-45 yrs., 2 males 10-16 yrs., 1 male 0-9 yrs., 1 female 26-45 yrs., 1 female 16-26 yrs., and 4 females 0-9. His neighbors were: C. MILLER, P. [Peter] GRAYBILL [GRAYBEAL], W. COFFEE [COFFEY], J. MILLER, J. BLACK, A. BOWER, J. GRIMES [GRYMES], C. WALTER [WALTERS], C. CRIDER [CRYDER], J. FOUTS, H. GRAYBILL, and G. [George] KOONS [KOONTZ, KOONTS, COONS, etc.] --- In 1820, Elijah "JENNOUS" had a household in Ashe of 1 male over 45 yrs., 1 male 18-26 yrs., 1 male 16-18 yrs., 1 male 10-16 yrs., 2 males 0-9, 1 female over 45 yrs., 1 female 16-26 yrs., 1 female 10-16 yrs., and 1 female 0-9 yrs. [This list was alphabetized.] --- Does anyone have ready access to the 1830, 1840 & 1850 censuses for Ashe that would be willing to do a lookup on the JENNINGS families there? Does anyone know where Elijah JENNINGS died, and whether he had a son named William or a son named Solomon? --- In 1840, Abram or Abraham JENNINGS and Sarah [UNK] JENNINGS were divorced in Wilkes. Does anyone have further information on this divorce? --- There were no GINNINS, GINNINGS, JENNINS or JENNINGS in Surry Co. in 1850, nor were there any in 1880. --- In 1856, William JENNINGS d. in Ashe Co.; his sons, Thornton, William, Martin, and John; dau. m. John CARSON. Thornton JENNINGS m. Charity FENDER [b. 1813], dau. of John FENDER [d. 1857, Ashe Co.; she was a widow in Grayson Co., VA in 1870. Which JENNINGS man was the husband of Charity's sister, Sarah FENDER? Meanwhile, William, Martin, and John JENNINGS, sons of Will d. 1856, all were in Alleghany in 1860; by 1870, Martin was still there, and a widow, Cynthia was living next door to him. [Was she the widow of his older brother, William?] Any help on any of these JENNINGS and allied families will be most appreciated. Please respond directly to my E-Mail below. THANKS! Since several people have joined this list over recent months, I want to mention again 2 books which I have written about the Wainscott, Elrod, Roberts, Baker, Stringfellow and other families who lived in the 1700s and 1800s in the Yadkin River area of NC and moved into Kentucky, settling in Madison, Gallatin and Owen Counties. Several moved on into Indiana, Missouri and Texas. "The Wainscott Family" is the main book. It starts with Richard Wainscott, the original immigrant from England to America. He was born in 1711 and arrived in Maryland in 1728. He soon moved to Virginia, then to North Carolina. I think he is the ancestor of everyone named Winscot or Wainscott whose family originated in Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky or Missouri. "The Wainscott Family" includes every descendant of Richard that I have been able to identify. Many other Wainscott researchers sent me hundreds and hundreds of names, dates, places and biographical information on their branches of this large family. All info I have received on any Wainscott or Winscot is in the book. The book has about 275 pages and costs $23. "Wainscott Cousins" is a companion book. It includes information on 6 of the families which most often intermarried with Wainscotts. Those families were Baker, Elrod, Roberts, Stringfellow, Razor, & McMains. "Wainscott Cousins" has about 210 pages and costs $17. Each book is fully indexed (every-name index), is printed on 8.5 inch by 11 inch paper, and is softbound (with binding comb so that the book lies flat when open). Shipping is $4.00 for one book or $5.50 for both books. If you are interested in purchasing one or both books, please write to me and I will give you the mailing address for your order.
