I haven't ever "officially" introduced myself or let anyone know precisely what lines I am tracing (or trying to!). My name is Ruth. I am happily wed to a native Michigander. I, myself, am not native to any one state, but I was born in Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia in the R. J. Reynolds Memorial Hospital. My father is still living on the same plot of land in Stokes County, NC where he was born. I am trying to schedule a trip to visit with him for a week (and to pick his brain and his basement <G>). I got into genealogy full force about three years ago, when my then 14-year-old brother had to do a class project . . . his family tree. The more names and dates he had, the more extra credit he would get. So, daddy spent a lot of Saturday hours in the cemeteries near the house (BTW, Daddy got an A <G>). From his cemetery "digging" and his own personal knowledge I have the following: Samuel Jackson Corn (b 22 January 1858/59; d 4 December 1945) married Mary Virginia Doss their son -- James Henry Corn (b 22 January 1883, Patrick Co., VA; d 08 August 1975) married Bertha B. Handy (b 4 September 1883, Patrick Co., VA; d 3 March 1947, Stuart, Patrick Co.,VA) their son -- Curvie James Corn (b 18 August 1909, Patrick Co., VA; d 28 March 1989, Walnut Cove, NC) married Ruth Emma Moore (b 28 March 1908; d 04 February 1970, Lawsonville, Stokes Co., NC) on 27 or 28 February 1929 their son -- Worth Curvie Corn (b 01 May 1939, Lawsonville, Stokes Co., NC) married Yvonne Zay Smith (b 28 April 1953, Bethesda, MD) on 03 June 1970 in Lawsonville, Stokes Co., VA their daughter -- Ruth Yvonne Corn (b 14 April 1972, Stuart, Patrick Co., VA) -- Me! So, here is my quandary. It is told that Samuel's father was Richard Corn who married Naomi (also spelled Naoma) Ingram, and that Richard's father is George Thomas Corn whose father was Jesse Corn. I have copies from the 1860 and 1880 census with Richard and Naoma and their various children listed (there is a Samuel). I then have a copy from the 1900 census with Samuel as head of household with his wife, Mary V., and their children at the time. So, I can establish the link between Richard and Samuel (my father personally met Samuel and the rest of them during his lifetime, so they are not presently in question). However, I can not put Richard with George with any verification. There are articles in Heritage books that put them together, but these are not proof. When I searched the 1850 census online, I did not find my Richard as head of household, so on the advice of fellow listers, I searched under the surname only. There is no George Corn listed as a head of household, either. But there is a Richard on the census, and he is approximately the same age (it's off by one year, but even the census takers made minor mistakes) . . . but his father is John Corn. I don't even HAVE a John Corn!!! Anyway, I am going to be in Stokes Co. sometime in the next few weeks, and I plan to head over to Patrick Co., VA to check the library (there are Heritage books there -- I'm going to make some photocopies.). Can anyone suggest where I might stop in to get information for my Richard and HIS ancestors? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the length of my post! Ruth Corn Roy
