He was a son of William Hickman, Sr., he lived for awhile in Stokes County, North Carolina before moving to Cumberland. As a resident of Surry county, North Carolina, he was a captain in the Revolution, serving under Colonels John Armstrong, Robert Armstrong, and Robert Lanier. He was at the battles of Alamance, Whitsell's Mill and Guilford Courthouse. After coming to Davidson county, TN , he practiced the art of land surveying and apparently kept a stable for horses. At the close of 1780, he served two months as an ensign under his brother, Captain Edwin Hickman, in Colonel John Armstrong's regiment, General Picken's brigade. He was in the battles of Alamance County, Whitsell's Mill, Guilford Courthouse, and the Battle of Eutaw Springs. (Thomas Hickman's Revolutionary war pension applicatiion, File no. S-4371.)
