    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Petree
    2. Hello, I must have deleted the post where someone said they were researching Petree. Although I am not researching them, I thought this might be of interest. My gr-aunt, Pearl Ulela Dawson, was born 1891 in Davie Co. She always told us that she was delivered by Dr. Aureleus Petree, a young widower staying at the home of her parents. She got her middle name from the first wife of this Dr. Petree. Judy Hinson

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] LOVELL, DAVIS
    2. Peter and Trudy Davis
    3. Hello, I am researching EDWARD LOVELL of Surry Co., NC. He lived near the Stokes Co. line in the 1790's until 1816 when he died. Edward was married to Rebecca Carmichael, Lucy Badgett, and Sarah Curry. Edward's widow Sarah (Sally) was living next to a William Lovell on the 1820 Census for Stokes Co. I think this William may have been a brother to Edward but I've not been able to find any other record for William or Sarah. I am also researching DAVID DAVIS of Surry Co. who died in 1806. I am trying to connect my David to David, Daniel, Morgan, Tolliver and William Davis who lived in the Townfork Settlement that is now in Stokes Co. Trudy Davis [email protected]

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] CHANDLER/SMITH/TILLEY/HANKS
    2. Denise C. Wood
    3. Hi Everyone, My name is Denise Chandler-Wood and I want you to know how much I appreciate this list! My folks wondered back and forth between Stokes, Surry, and Forsyth and that is alot of traveling! I have being trying to track down my father's folks (Chandler-descendants of Edmond/Isaac/Richard Lee/Isaac Breckenridge/Isaac Jackson) and his maternal grandparents (SMITH-William/Frances Tilley-wife/Etta P.) One of my grandmother's (Etta) sister's married a Clifton Hanks. Someone said they could do a lookup and I am looking for the 1870 census of Stokes for a Payne guy who "gave away" a "Frances" who had a birthdate of 1859. Frances Tilley's mother (on her marriage certificate to William Smith of 1893 in Surry County lists a "Sally Tilly" as her mother. I can find no Tilley's in the areas there who had a Frances or a Sally as a relative. William was married to a "Sarah" and is on the Surry census with her til she died and William married Frances who was a neighbor. And he actually filed a Bastardy Bond for her in 1873 in Alleghany Co. She was 12 and he was 25. Is there someone out there who knows anyone that could be connected to this family. William and Frances had many children together before marriage and a few after marriage. He was in the Civil War as well. I also believe there is Melungeon connection here somewhere. The child born in Alleghancy County was "Warrick Winfield Tilley" and I did obtain some delayed birth certificates for four of his children in the Surry records. He was the only child with her maiden name. Also there is some story about one of the Smith girls child died and one of Warrick's children was on trial for it?????? Thanks and looking forward to hearing some stories.

    2. Frank Brooks
    3. Searching for information on William Brook of Beaver Island District, Stokes Co., NC census of 1790. William was b/ abt 1790. He sold land on Beaver Island Creek in Stokes Co., NC on Jan 4, 1814, to John Heath. He also sold land at that time to his son William Jr. It is thought he moved to Franklin Co., Indiana after Jan. 1814. Humphrey Brook also sold land on the Beaver Island Creek and Snow Creek on Sept 30, 1813. Humphrey bought land in Jefferson Co., Indiana in 1816. I would like to think these two men are related; but I have no eveidence. Any help welcome. Frank Brooks Muncie, Indiana

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Lewises
    2. Jay Flanders
    3. Hi Gang, Thought I might as well send this out again to the "old lists" as well as the new. I have some LEWISES who lived in Rowan and Davie Counties just south of Mocksville on Dutchman's Creek. My ancestor Daniel Lewis, a Quaker, got there about 1760. His wife was Hannah Wilcox(en), a grand-daughter of Squire Boone. They all traveled to the area together from Pennslyvania. Daniel's daughter Sarah Lewis either married Joseph LEWIS in a military ceremony at Veaches Camp or in the Quaker Chapel that Daniel built on his land at Dutchman's Creek. One child was born to them. His name was Joel Lewis born Feb 1776 there at the farm. All of the above is well documented EXCEPT for Joseph Lewis! We can't find the right LEWIS family to put him in! My ancestor Joel Lewis named his children: Sarah, Joseph, Richard, Rachel, Joel, Richmond, Green, and James Stapleton. These christian names lead us to the "Warner Hall" Lewisis via David Lewis, a son of "Councillor" John Lewis. David Lewis married Ann Terrell, daughter of Joel or William Terrell. The names Joel, Richmond and Green were common names in the Terrell family. David Lewis had a son named William Terrell Lewis. William Terrell Lewis had sons named: Joel, Micajah Green, & James Martin. William Terrell and these three sons of "King's Mountain" fame, lived in neighboring Surry County. I would be anxious to hear from ANY Lewis connections from Rowan and neighboring counties. I do professional research myself and we've had Jo White Linn working on our line but to no success. The only way we'll be able to solve this is through you all and your family information. Thanks for reading my tale! Jay ;<)

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Yancey Ancel Bowen, Stokes & Forsyth Co,NC
    2. Dennis Brubaker
    3. I am looking for information on my gg grandfather, YANCEY ANCEL BOWEN. He was born in 1837 possibly in Stokes County. He married SUSAN HARRIS. They were listed in the 1860 Forsyth County census as living in Sedge Garden Township, house #2065, family 1954. The census also lists a daughter: CHANA C. BOWEN, born in 1859. Yancey's Civil war records lists his place of birth as Stokes County, NC. He served in the Co. I, 33rd NC Infantry. He enrolled for service on 10 Oct 1861 in Pfafftown, NC. He deserted on 15 May 1863 and returned to duty on 7 Nov 1863. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness. Sometime between 1867 and 1870, the family moved to Roane County, West Virginia. His daughter, Chana does not show up in the 1870 Roane County census. I suspect that it was her death that caused him to desert the war in 1863 but I have no proof. Yancey's mother's name was MARGARET. I would like to find: the parents of YANCEY ANCEL BOWEN and SUSAN HARRIS BOWEN what happened to CHANA C. BOWEN the marriage date of YANCEY and SUSAN Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Cathy

    3. I have just joined the list and I am interested in making contact with others who may have information on my family. > Johann Daniel Hofheintz came to the part of Surry Co which became Stokes in 1771. He appears in the 1790 census in the Salisbury District of NC and in the 1800 census in Stokes County. He died there in 1816. He was married to Catherina Wagner and they had nine children: Johannes (John) Huffines, Phillip Huffines, Jacob Huffines, Elizabeth Hofheintz, Daniel Huffhines, Adam Hofines, Margaret Huffhines,William Huffhines and Edward Huffhines. [ I have spelled the children's names as I found them recorded.] > Johann Daniel was the brother of my immigrant ancestor who settled in Guilford Co. 1. [NCSTOKES-L] welcome to the list!
    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. Only about three hours after I announced this list, we've picked up about 25 subscribers, so maybe it's time to say hello. I'd wait a bit longer, but I need to shut down early today since I have to go out this evening. I think a lot of you know me already, either recently from NCGenWeb or from further back as a Stokes/Forsyth county researcher. My father's entire family has been in this part of NC since before 1770, so I'm probably related to many of you. I'm sure we will all get better acquainted as time goes on. You probably also know that I recently took over the Stokes and Forsyth county NCGenWeb pages from Faye Moran. She's a tough act to follow, and I doubt I'll have nearly as much time as she did to dig up new primary data to post on these pages. However, contributions from the rest of you will be most welcome, and if we work together, we can make this list and the web pages into great resources for everyone. Some of the names in my family in this area: DOUB, GRABS, FREY, HAUSER, HEGE, HOLDER, LANIUS, SPAINHOUR, TRANSOU, VOLCK Please feel free to introduce yourselves and start some discussion.
