Hello Everyone, I'm looking for information that would link certain families together. I have two PETREEs in my file. William Wesley PETREE D bef 1870. married (possibly 2nd Marriage)to Delany Westmoreland the widow of Reuben SOUTHERN and a Paulina PETREE b. abt 1816 married to Armisted WALKER. Delany PETREE is listed on the 1870 Forsyth Co. Census #160/161 with her 2 daughters from 1st marriage and a son Solomon PETREE 5yrs old by her second. Armisted WALKER is Family #172/173. There is also Ransom WALKER Family #177/178. Could they all be related? The MCGEE family is related thru marriage to the WALKER and PETREE families. I am interested in Clemmon/Clement MCGEE and his spouse Delilah ROBBINS. Does anyone on the list have anything on these Families? Thanks, Phil Philip N. Spainhour [email protected]
I believe one of my ancestors lived in the Muddy Creek area also. So far I cannot find anything to show he owned there, so he may have rented from the Moravians also. It seems the Moravians buried his wife in the Dobbs Parish Cemetery which the Moravians maintained for the burial of non-Moravians in the area. I wonder if anyone could give us some direction on this. Did the Moravians have a formal rental system set up to accomodate non-Moravians? Forrest
Does anyone have any information on Robert J. Flynn born in Stokes County b1822 d12-11-1910 and buried in Danville, VA. He married Martha J. Pascall born in Stokes b.1840 d.3-16-1905. They had three sons William Douglas, James Alan, and and Charles D. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Send to [email protected]
My family is connected to some of the BOYERS that Faye Moran has listed on the Boyer Family Page. My problem is that I don't know which BOYER. I believe it may be Robert Boyer, born 1785. The Boyer Family page shows 9 children born to Robert and his 2nd wife whom he married in 1845 in IL. He would have been 60 yrs old. The children must have been by his first wife. Does anyone have any information on the name of his first wife and the spouses of any of his children? Any lead would be greatly appreciated.
Can anyone tell me where I might find records relating to lands which the Moravians might have leased along Muddy Creek ? Anything on-line ? Thanks, Ted

Evelyn Sell wrote: >"Ruben Sell" born 1804 >Married July 1289 in Stokes Co (Marriage Bond & Caleb Johnson >was bondsman) was he related? or just good friends. >Catherine Bodenhamer born in Rowan Co. Daughter of George >and Barbara Weir Bodenhamer. etc. I can't identify Ruben's parents either, but just wanted to point out that there are two possible SELL families in this area - the Quakers SELLs, as Evelyn mentioned in her original message, and the German SOELLE family. With that link to the BODENHAMERs, and Davidson county, also the JOHNSON link, I wonder if maybe Evelyn's are the latter. James Jurney has some information on the SOELLE family in his book on the Butner family, p. 73. The early Soelles were Mennonites who did not practice child baptism, and records of births of children are therefore scarce. Jurney quotes Mrs. Carolyn Cell Bakow of Venice CA that three brothers, Heinrick, Dirk, and Martin Sellen came from near Crefeld on the Ruhr and settled in Germantown PA in 1683, 1688, and by 1700, respectively. By 1744 Adam and wife Sarah [it's not clear whose son he was] were living in Conewago, York Co. PA. Aaltje Soelle stated in her memoir that she moved from Germantown to Conewago, and it is believed that Adam was her father. Jurney also quotes Rowan Co. deed records, Deed Book 1, p. 5-8, William Linvil to Adam Sills 587 acres on North bank of Yadkin River, 15 June 1753. Part of this tract was sold to Mathias Sapenfield 4 Oct. 1754, and part to Henry Boyer 6 June 1765. Adam was baptized into the Moravian Church at the Hope Congregation. Adam and Sarah's daughter Aaltje Soelle (1724-1804) married Christopher ELLROTH or ELROD. They had a big family, many of whom stayed in the Stokes/Forsyth/Davidson county area, and there are a considerable number of links between the later ELRODs and the JOHNSON family, especially around Clemmons NC. The DOUTHIT, WAINSCOTT, and RIDDLE families are also multiply intertwined with these folks. Elizabeth Harris [email protected]

"Ruben Sell" born 1804 Married July 1289 in Stokes Co (Marriage Bond & Caleb Johnson was bondsman) was he related? or just good friends. Catherine Bodenhamer born in Rowan Co. Daughter of George and Barbara Weir Bodenhamer. 1st son, Caleb Riley born Dec 1829 Davidson Co. 2nd son Jacob born Winston-Salem Area 1836 Ruben got a land grant in Stokes Co. (property over in Kernersville area next to Jonathan Sell Sr property) by 1837-38 the Ruben Sell family moved to Birmingham, Illinois Schuyler Co. More children born there. Ruben died Nov 9, 1854. burried in Round Prarie cemetery just out of town of Birmingham, Illinois. Catherine moved to Mt. Sterling, IA with youngest son Barnabus and wife and daughters She is burried there in cemetery just out of town. There are a lot of Sells living in Stokes Co, but so far we cannot link to them, except through the Bodenhamers. Jonathan Sell Sr was the Quaker Sell. Could he be Ruben's Grandfather? She was coming in once a week to help people with genealogy. Unless I'm thinking of the wrong person. Ken Kenneth J. Banner [email protected]
Hi, I'm researching these names in Stokes County: TILLEY (first name Foster, married Nancy Vernon -- no clues yet on Foster's parents VERNON (the aforementioned Nancy, parents, Jonathan Vernon and on back) FOSTER (only a hunch that the aforementioned "Foster" got his name from this surname...yes, I'm THAT desperate. Any help appreciated! Sincerely, Karla [email protected]
I am so happy! Both a Wilkes and Stokes County list. Most of my family is from Wilkes, but I am also looking for my HUTCH(I,IN,ER)SON ancestry in Stokes County. Jacob HUTCHINSON is the son of William HUTCHERSON and Alice REYNOLDS of Stokes County. I am seeking any information on William and Alice. I match my gg grandfather Francis to the family of Jacob HUTCHINSON because Francis is listed as the male child of Jacob on a Wilkes County School Census....going to the same school as Emeline SEBASTIAN, his future wife. I have found Jacob's family on the 1850 Wilkes census, but my Francis is not listed. I found Francis and Emeline Elizabeth SEBASTIAN HUTCHISON on Wilkes Census of 1860. Francis died of pneumonia during the Civil War. By 1870 she is alone with her children, Martha, James Calloway and Marcus HUTCHI(N)SON. Thanks for this new list, Marlene Myers-Josephsohn

Can anyone tell me if you can get copies of Bastardy Bonds from Stokes Co? Omeda
Thought that I would list again my unattached Cotton/Cotten ancestor. I am searching for information regarding the family of Caleb Joshua Cotton/Cotten born in the area of old Rowan Co. North Carolina about 1782. From family tradition his father has been named as James Cotton/Cotten. There is a census record for a James Cotton in Surry Co. NC 1800. Caleb Cotton has a marriage bond in Surry Co. NC, 16 Nov 1801 to Nancy Meredith, witness was William Meredith, bondsman was Thomas C. Burch. Caleb later moved to the area of Rutherford Co. Tennessee near Nashville. He is listed in the census records of 1810. He is also listed in records of both Rutherford Co. and Davidson Co. TN. He served in the war of 1812. Sometime around 1820, he moved to the area of Southern IL. areas of Pope and Johnson Co. where he is also listed in records and census. Caleb's father may have been associated in the Cumberland area of North Carolina/Tennessee, as the names listed with Caleb in the records of Tennessee were prevalent in this Cumberland area. There has been some family theory that Caleb's father or grandfather may have been a Christian Missionary to the Indians??? Caleb's mother may have been Cherokee or part Cherokee. In family tradition she has been given the name of Blue Bird also known as Sarah Crouch/Gooch/Goochee?? Children of Caleb & Nancy (Meredith) Cotton/Cotten were Sarah, Malinda, Mahala, James, Caleb Carrol, Noah Shelton, Nancy Josephine, Gabriel Lovoen, Elizabeth, Margaret Louisa, Peninah Shropshire. Peninah is my GGgrandmother, she was born 12 Mar 1827 Vienna, Johnson Co. IL and she was of Cherokee descent. Any information regarding any of these Cotton/Cottens would be very much appreciated. Marla
