    1. Re: [NCSTOKES-L] Salisbury District Geography question
    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. >I notice that both Stokes and Guilford counties had a Salisbury District in >their 1790 censuses. Did this district encompass both counties? > Yes. The Salisbury district included a wide swath through central NC, including Guilford, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes and Surry Counties. Present-day Davidson, Yadkin, and Forsyth would also fall within this area. Elizabeth Harris [email protected] state coordinator for NCGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Capt William Meredith
    2. I have been researching the family of Captain William Meredith who fought at the Battle of Kings Mtn during the Revolution. He is mentioned in records of Surry, Stokes, and Wilkes Counties. He was the son of James Meredith and Mildred Bagby, also of Stokes and Surry Counties. He was married to Ann Bonds and had children. He was married second to Rebecca Keyes Noblett. He may have died in Adair Co. Kentucky, leaving a will but only mentioned two of his children. He stated that his other children had received their inheritances. I am interested in learning more about his children, especially his son James B. Meredith. Any help or information would be appreciated. In 1790 there is a deed transaction for a David Witherspoon in Wilkes Co. that was witnessed by a James B Meredith and Nancy (X) Meredith. I would like to learn who the James B. Meredith is and his wife Nancy. I believe them to be my ancestors who were a James Meredith and Nancy Fulkison (Fulkerson). Any help or information would be appreciated. Marla

He was born October 1760 in Albemarle or Culpepper County Virginia, and married 23 September 1781 in Henry county, Virginia to Elizabeth Jane Pryor. He was a son of William Hickman, Sr., he lived for awhile in Stokes County, North Carolina before moving to Cumberland. He was at the battles of Alamance, Whitsell's Mill and Guilford Courthouse. After coming to Davidson county, TN , he practiced the art of land surveying and apparently kept a stable for horses. 2. Julia A. (Heaton)Krutilla
    3. Hello All, I'm seeking documented parents of my husbands ancestor: Marmaduke WHITE born 1847 near Winston/Salem, NC. He migrated with his family to Hamilton Co., IND before 1860C, and married a Rachel BALDWIN (1/2 Native American)b. 1854. They had 14 children with the following known: Minnie, Henry, Harriet, Thomas, Ivan, Jessie, Bessie, Grover, Opal, and Alice. I'm only guessing he is a son of William WHITE b. 1796 NC and Anna b. 1798 NC who lived near Marmaduke in the 1870 Hamilton Co., IN census. With such a common surname, wondered if you have ever run across or remembered a Marmaduke in the 1850s NC records. Hope all are enjoying the remainder of the weekend, Julia A. I don't know if he was discharged at this time or what. He did move his family to Roane County, WV between 1867 and 1870. Perhaps Yancey traveled through West Virginia during his service to the Conferate Army and liked what he saw. I haven't been able to prove it but I think that Yancey deserted in 1864 because of the death of his daugher, Chana C. Bowen. No proof---just a hunch! The records also included a document from a Justice of the Peace regarding the circumstances that led to the death of some horses and mules that belonged to the Confederate Army. The soldier involved is listed as: ALEX BOWEN Private Co. E 35th NC I don't know if this is related to Yancey Bowen or how it ended up in his files but if anyone is interested in it, I will try to send it to you. It is handwritten and difficult to read. If anyone has more information on Yancey Ansel Bowen or would like more information about the docuent on Alex Bowen, I'm more than happy to share what I have. Thanks, Cathy

    3. In my deceased Mothers papers, there is a picture of Elonzo Smith labeled as the son of her grandfather's sister. Does this name mean anything to anyone. He appears to be about 20-30 years old. Another picture of some Smith boys, and I assume Elonzo Smith's brothers is labeled Brutus Smith, age 29 Lonnie Smith Craven Smith Travis Smith Victor Smith age 18 years While I know that Elonzo Smith had come to visit her, on horseback and spent the day, or perhaps over night. At the time this picture was taken, my grandmother was living in Ronda, Wilkes County, N,C. Does any of these Smith names mean anything to anybody? Would love to make contact with the family of these young men. You may reach me at [email protected] Thank you so much. K M Menard

Aug 1 1773, probably in Stokes County. At least he married there in 1798. Do you know of any of Joseph's siblings. SMITH is such a fun name to hunt for! Lucy Folger

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Publication of Stokes Co. Settlers
    2. Jerry Hicks
    3. Does anyone have the publication of "Stokes County - two volumes 1873 - 1868"? Volume 1 is males, volume 2 females. Hope this is a publication of settlers. I am seeking information on ancestors of Robert I. Hicks, b. 3 Nov 1818 near Winston, Stokes Co. If anyone has access I would appreciate information on any references to Hicks' in period 1783 - 1849. Thank You! Jerry
