    1. Re: [NCSTOKES-L] Moravian Beliefs
    2. Denise, By all means go to the Moravian Christmas Celebration. If it is like the one we have in Clemmons, NC, it is a Candle light Love Feast. The whole service is full of music. A bun and coffee (which is boiled not brewed) is served while the music is sung. At the end of the service, everyone is give a lighted candle for the final song. It is very moving and a definite MUST on our Christmas Eve list. The church here also has a children's Love Feast the Sunday before Christmas where lemonade is served instead of coffee and the children's choir does a lot of the singing.

    2. Susan Schlack
    3. Hi everyone, The Moravian Church is a mainstream Protestant church, very similar to the Lutheran Church. In fact, the man who renewed the church in Germany, Count Zinzendorf, was a Lutheran. Moravian traditions such as the Lovefeast, the Moravian Star, and the Putz (among others) are explained by Jim Boddie. Mr. Boddie has done a very good summary of Moravian history, beliefs, customs and practices with a bibliography. This is the second link on Moravian Church Genealogy Links at http://www.enter.net/~smschlack . Susan Schlack Bethlehem, PA

Here are some links to tell you a little about us Moravian. I am a member of Bethabara Moravian Church, located in the Old Town area of Winston-Salem. This church is very rich in the history of Forsyth and Stokes County. We will be 250 years old in the year 2003. The records of the Moravians are at the Reynolda Library and are available by loan. These are great books to learn about our area. My personal web page is at http://personal.lig.bellsouth.net/lig/c/a/captreb/ It has my family history as well as what a Moravian is. I have also put information about the Candle Lovefeast and what its meaning is. Jo Beth Holland Boyles

    2. Denise C. Wood
    3. Good Morning! Speaking of Moravian....what are the contemporary beliefs? My father's family was from Stokes and Forsythe, my mother's Rockingham, Caswell, and Guilford. I have driven through Germantown a few times. My sister lives in Reidsville and she called me yesterday to invite me to the Christmas celebration at the Moravian church in Stokes on the 19th. I am in grad school at a Christian University but have never studied Moravian. All my Mom's and Dad's folks were Presbyterian/Scots-Irish. Help the dummy here okay? There are some very good links on it to individual church pages, Pennsylvania information, cemetery records, etc. One thing I'd like to add, however - having grown up as a member of the Moravian Church, I had always assumed that my ancestors who ended up in the Stokes/Forsyth Co. area *came from* Moravia. I was wrong! It turns out nearly all of them came from either Alsace or Switzerland, were initially Lutherans or German Reformed, and joined the Moravian church either shortly before leaving Europe, or after their arrival in Pennsylvania. 1. [NCSTOKES-L] LYON
    2. J A Dresser
    3. I am searching for information about the family of James Lyon, who moved to Stokes County from Pittsylvania and Henry Co.s, Virginia, about 1800. James appears to be a member of the LYON family which includes Humberston(e) and Stephen, and he appears to have named two of his sons after them. These men appear in the western counties of Virginia in the mid-1700s, but Stephen is "killed by Indians" on the Holsten River in 1754, which appears to be the stimulus for the family moving further inland to Pittsylvania County. James is an officer of the militia during the Revolution and holds many civic offices in both counties. He and his family moved to Stokes County, where he is said to have died in 1817. The Stokes County Heritage Book includes a family section (#652) written by Alice Tucker, which mentions this man and his ancestors and son, James, jr. I would be most interested in contacting researchers of this LYON family. I have a Lyon family in Caswell County, NC, that I suspect is connected to the southside Virginia family, but I cannot document it yet. I have long suspected an early connection to MD and New England Lyon folks, but the Heritage book is the first to state such a progression. I would be most grateful to anyone sharing even the smallest information about this family, either in Stokes County or their previous locations. I would be delighted to share the information I have about my branch of the family. Jane

    3. Hi all, I am researching the WOODLIEF line and have come across connections in northwest Forsyth, southwest Stokes. This Woodlief is not a direct line of descent, so I am not following the associated surnames. Still, perhaps some of the information will help others, and might spark a clue for the Woodlief line. I have James E. WOODLIEF who married Mary Jane FLYNN, 28 Dec 1859 bond date. The couple had a daughter, Lucy Ann WOODLIEF, b. 19 Sept 1860. Apparently, Mary Jane (nee FLYNN) Woodlief remarried sometime prior to 1870 to a Jackson WALL (Possibly: H.A. Wall to Jane Woodly on 9/10/1866). Jane is shown as Jackson Wall's wife in the 1870 and 1880 Forsyth census, Old Richmond Township. There were three additional children - apparently of Mary Jane by Jackson Wall: Wright (b ca 1867), James R. (b ca 1868), Columbus (b ca 1871) and Caroline (b ca 1877). Lucy Ann WOODLIEF married 22 Feb. 1881 (license gotten 21 Feb).....the information on the license and subsequent marriage record shows: Lucy Ann Woodlieff of Bethania, NC age 20, color white, daughter of James Woodlieff and Jane Woodlieff, father dead and the mother living, resident of Bethania, NC; married to: Jonathan W. Speas of Bethania, NC age 24, color white, son of Israel G. Speas and M. E. Speas both living and residents of Bethania, NC; S. H. Helsabeck minister of M. E. Church (can't read next word after church...looks like South but I know that can't be correct) united in matrimony Jonathan W. Speas and Lucy Ann Woodleiff the parties licensed above on the 22nd day of February, 1881 at the house (near the house) [note...this is exactly what is on the license...both statements]...of S. H. Helsabeck in Bethania. Witnesses present at marriage: E. P. Vest (?) of Five Forks, NC O. A. Spainhower of Dalton, NC M. L. Helsabeck of Five Forks, NC Lucy Ann (nee Woodlief) Speas' death certificate shows: Date of Death: Aug 29, 1934 Age: 73yrs, 11 mos, 8 days DOB: Sept 19, 1860 Husband: J. W. Speas Birthplace: Forsyth Co, NC Father's Name: James Woodlieff Mothers Maiden Name: Mary Jane Flynn (Both parents' listed birth place as NC..nothing else) Informant was X. E. Speas Address of informant and deceased: Donnoha, NC Both Lucy and J.W. Speas are buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist, 3.5 mi n/w of Tobaccoville, Forsyth Co. If anyone has any information that might help in tracking this James WOODLIEF, and determining who his parents were, I would greatly appreciate your help. Also note....this James WOODLIEF *MAY* be the same as a James Woodlief shown serving in the CSA, 33rd Inf, Co. I -- but I have not had a chance to check these records yet. 2. Barbara N Cheek
    3. Today my husband and I visited the Throckmorton Family Cemetery off Moorefield Road on Little Snow Creek in Stokes County. It is in terrible shape. An old rotten tree has fallen across it, dislodging the tombstone of Elizabeth Law Throckmorton, my greatgrandmother. If something isn't done, this cemetery will be lost forever to the elements of time This is the cemetery where William Lipscomb Throckmorton, a CSA veteran, and his wife, Elizabeth Law Throckmorton are buried. His brother, Julius Hade Throckmorton and wife, Margaret Manring Throckmorton are also buried here. Their parents, James Throckmorton and Ailsey (Alice) Tilley are also reportedly buried here but there is no marker for them. These people have numerous decendants by the names of Nelsons, Stephens (Stevens), Priddys, Reids, Pruitts, Holts, Stanleys, Bullins, Joyces, Hicks, Glidewells....I could name many others.
