I am looking for info on Nathaniel J. Young. He was born 1770 in North Carolina. He married Francis ?. He was in Patrick County, Virginia by 1824 because he bought some land then. Some of his children were born in North Carolina, some in Patrick County. Francis was born about the same time as Nathaniel. I am trying to find Nathaniel and possibly Francis' maiden name and her parents. QUERY: Need Help In Mid-South/McNairy/Hardin/Tippah/Northwest Mississippi Region/NC/Virginia/KY/etc. ! I am seeking corroborative evidence, from anytime prior to 1870 that my GGF WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTHE is related to FORSYTH(E)'s in McNairy County, TENN. There maybe other possibilities in Kentucky, northwest Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, or Missouri counties. WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTH(E) (1846-1913) appears in Lauderdale County, TENN 1870 census, where a 1907 birth record states WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTHE was from McNairy County, TENN. Am interested to know where my Forsyth(e) line is traceable to prior to 1870 Lauderdale County TN. William Stanton Forsyth, 1846-1913, (born in ???) first documented in 1870 census in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, Hales Point, on the Mississippi River. Listed occupation was "Rafting." Head of household was "Pamelia" a 52? yr old female. Have no other known information on father of William Stanton Forsyth. William Stanton Forsyth bought 640 acres (1873) at Hales Point, married, operated store, cotton gin, cut timber, reared large family there until death at mature age. A 1907 county birth record for his last child cited William Stanton Forsyth's birthplace as McNairy County, Tennessee. Much research in McNairy County, Tennessee has turned up no credible links among the Forsyth(e) families that are well documented there. Because of the 1870 census "rafting" occupation, we think he (they) may have journeyed from the northern states or from overseas to West Tennessee via Mississippi/Ohio Rivers. (Suspect the entry in the 1870 census record stating William Stanton Forsyth's birthplace as TN could be bogus info.) There is no record (census, deed, wills, county court minutes, birth/death records, military, etc., etc.) visible in the USA yet that predates this 1870 find. The full 1870 Lauderdale County TENN census for this starting point household (located at Hales Point on the Mississippi River about 55 miles north of Memphis....) was: S.?(or I or J) FORSYTHE 32 Male Boating [nothing further known] --> Note: "SANDY" FORSYTHE, 21, laborer, from 1860 census in BENJ. ISHAM FORSYTHE is also found in the 1830 and 1840 censuses in McNairy County. An 1858 McNairy Court petition of Isham G. FORSYTHE's widow, CATHERINE FORSYTHE, named her and his survivors (6 of whom were under 21): JAMES FORSYTHE WILLIAM FORSYTHE {maybe Wm. Stanton FORSYTHE in 1870 Laud. WILLIAM STANTON FORSYTHE, had a son named GROVER FORSYTHE who was a lifelong resident of Lauderdale County TENN, and is buried (1932) at Edith Cemetery in Lauderdale County TENN. Had this been the same GROVER FORSYTHE, and BERT FORSYTHE is connected to ISHAM G. FORSYTHE then some degree of closure was possible. But alas, if you're buried in 1932 in Lauderdale, you're not around in 1946 in McNairy. ************************************************************** There is too much potential info in these households to have been at this 12+ year long dead end. Thank you in advance for any Help! Sterling Forsythe (and etal)
Hi members, Here's another Stokes Co. couple I would like to find info on: John ROBERTSON and Screlda CONNOR According to the death certificate of their daughter, Darina Catherine ROBERTSON who married Lee John ROBERTSON (no mistake, Robertson married Robertson) her father was John ROBERTSON and her mother was Screlda CONNOR. Again from the death cert., Darina Catherine ROBERTSON was born 25 Dec 1889 in Stokes Co., NC, and died 2 Jun 1964 in Iredell Co., NC. Relatives think she had a sister named Merman and a brother named Tom. That's all the info I have at present, and have not been able to find the John Robertson family in census records. I have checked only for the spelling of "Robertson" and have not yet checked "Robinson" or "Roberson." Hope this sounds familiar to someone. I would be grateful for any help on this family in this new year! Thanks, Barbara L. Stanford [email protected]
Hi members of the Stokes County list, Just joined the list today. I hope to find connections/and additional info on my husband's ancestors Archibald W. "Archer" ROBERTSON b. 1 Jun 1800 VA, his wife Frances H. GILLIAM b. 21 Sep 1805 VA, and their children b. in VA/Stokes Co. NC. I shall also be happy to share what I have. Best wishes to all for success in 1999! Barbara L. Stanford [email protected]
A couple of weeks ago I announced that the 1810 Stokes County census was now on-line. The URL I gave turned out to be a temporary one, and the file is now in its permanent home. It's a four-part ftp file; probably the easiest way to get to it now is through the Stokes County NCGenWeb page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncstokes/data.html Wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year! Hi: To those who are researching STAFFORD Families that lived In Stokes CO, NC. I assume you also are interested in those STAFFORDs who earlier lived in Rowan or Surry CO before that area became part of Stokes and, later, Forsyth CO. I have listed below info re my STAFFORD ancestors in hope that your STAFFORD connections may be related to them -- or, if not, that you may have info to share concerning them. My earliest known STAFFORD ancestor is JAMES STAFFORD (1786-1849) who I believe MAY be the "James Stafford" listed in the 1820 Stokes CO census. If so, he would have been 33/35 yrs old at that time. He also MAY be the " James Stafford "found in the 1830 Stokes CO "Head of Household" census list. I also believe my JAMES STAFFORD's parents may have been JOHN ("JACK") STAFFORD (1756-1846 and LYDIA (1765-1840)-last name unknown. A "John Stafford" is listed in the 1820 Stokes census and, also, in the 1830 Stokes CO "Head of Household" census (page 99). If that "John Stafford" was the father of my JAMES STAFFORD, then my JOHN ("JACK") STAFFORD would have been 63/65 yrs old in 1820 and 73/75 yrs old in 1830. My JAMES STAFFORD married ELIZABETH MONROE(1789-1849). They had 10 children that I know of. Their first child was JOHN MONROE STAFFORD (1813-1877), my great grandfather, who was born, I am told, in Stokes CO. Having been born in 1813, I believe he would have been too young to have been listed by name in the 1820 and 1830 Census. Do you agree? . JOHN MONROE STAFFORD married MARY ELIZABETH "POLLY" BOOE (1824-1868) and, together, they had 11 children that I know of, one of which was my grandfather, LEO WASHINGTON STAFFORD (1860-1941). Several years after MARY ELIZABETH BOOE died, JOHN MONROE STAFFORD married ESTHER PEELER. They had two children (daughters) that I know of before JOHN MONROE STAFFORD died in 1877. JOHN MONROE STAFFORD, his first wife MARY ELIZABETH and most of their children are buried at Pleasant Fork Cemetery near Winston-Salem, NC. I will greatly appreciate any info you may have--or, if not, any ideas concerning how I may locate info regarding the above individuals. I also will be happy to furnish you all of the info I have regarding the families of JAMES AND JOHN MONROE STAFFORD and their descendants. I wish you a healthy/prosperous 1999 !!! Mary, I'm not researching any of your lines....but I know there was a Rothrock in Gold Hill (Rowan Co) ca. 1850s...he was minister of Gold Hill Methodist Church...and a Rothrock family shows up in teh 1850 Rowan census. Don't know if it could fit into your Rothrocks or not....but a huge chunk (including Gold Hill) of the 1850 census is now online at Rowan NCGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncrowan/ Hope it turns out to be of some use. Hi everyone, I am just discovering my North Carolina connections, so thank you for getting that on-line. You may want to notify everyone on [email protected] . Wouldn't it be true that certain townships would have higher a concentration of descendants of the earliest Moravian settlers? Sorry, don't know my early NC geography. Sue
Let me add my thanks, ladies, for your work. Forrest
