    3. Dan Stevenson asked: >JOHNSON, SIDES, SPACH, ROTHROCK > >The seventh of nine known children of Jacob SIDES (1793-1840) and Maria >(Mary) SPACH (1793-1868) was Salome (Sarah) SIDES (1830-1891) who was born >at Friedberg, Forsyth County, NC and married William Caustin JOHNSON >(1823-1882) in 1853 at Forsyth Co., NC. [email protected] I have William C.'s father, but have a question about his mother's identity. Can anyone else confirm, dispute, or extend this? First Generation --------------------------------------------- 1 William Coston JOHNSON. Born 19 Apr 1823 in Clemmons NC. Died 1882. He married Salome SEITZ [SIDES]. Second Generation --------------------------------------------- 2 William JOHNSON. Born 27 Feb 1786. Died 28 Jan 1835 in Davidson Co. NC. It would appear that he is the same William Johnson who also married Alsha (Aaltje?) Boner. Boner family information from Parker Elrod just lists him with Alsha, but says she died 1816 and nevertheless lists William Coston Johnson b. ca. 1822 as his son, so he has to have another wife who must be the mother of William Coston, and also Alexander, who was linked to William previously, not on Parker Elrod's sheets. Alsha may have died 1818 instead - see cemetery records and her notes. William does not seem to be buried with Alsha at Mt. Pleasant. Third Generation --------------------------------------------- 4 James JOHNSON. Born About 1757. Died 21 May 1830 in Rowan Co. NC. Faye Moran, e-mail 8/31/96: He was apparently born at sea in 1757 on the way to America. His grave site is unknown but his will was probated Aug. 30, 1830, in Rowan Co. NC. He married Jane McKNIGHT. 5 Jane McKNIGHT. Born 4 Oct 1762. Died 31 Jan 1818. Fourth Generation --------------------------------------------- 8 William JOHNSON. Born 31 Aug 1732. Died 5 Sep 1765. Buried in Mt. Pleasant Cem, Clemmons, NC. Immigrated 1757? His son James supposedly born at sea. William died in 1765. Elizabeth was the court appointed executrix of his estate. In ca. 1767 she married Robert Willson. post to JOHNSON-L by "Patsy in Texas" 3/98 says that he came from Wales in 1757. He married Elizabeth ELLIS. 9 Elizabeth ELLIS. Born About 1735. not buried at Mt. Pleasant 10 George McKNIGHT. He married Catherine ?? [McKNIGHT]. 11 Catherine ?? [McKNIGHT]. Her first name from Faye Moran e-mail 9/1/96 Is she the Catherine McKnight who died 5 Sep 1771 and is buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist? And is this Catherine Douthit? 1. [NCSTOKES-L] new NC Marriages Database
    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. I am delighted to announce the brand-new NC Marriages Database for NCGenWeb: http://tn-1.rootsweb.com/~marce/ncarolina/index.html Marceline Beem did the scripts for this new feature, and it is really neat. I think you'll like it. Sonya Woosley entered the marriage records from Judith Manley's 500k text file that we've been using for several years, and I added some marriages from my personal files and from Quaker and Moravian church records. Specifically for Stokes, Surry, and Forsyth counties, I entered marriages that are mentioned in the Records of the Moravians in NC up through about 1800, and am going to continue chipping away at those as time permits. Since these marriages usually don't appear in public records (i.e. no marriage bond was filed if banns were published in church), I think this should be a useful addition to the file. Please help by contributing your own data, particularly information from family Bibles or other personal records that would supplement what's available in the public files of bonds and licenses. Altogether we have just about 5000 records now, and I feel sure it's going to grow rapidly. Enjoy! We're still considering this as a beta test version, so please report any problems either to Marceline Beem ([email protected]) or to me ([email protected]). 1. [NCSTOKES-L] 1840 Stokes County census revisited
    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. The 1840 Stokes County census is often difficult to read. The writing is faint on many pages, some pages are torn or smudged, and several letters are hard to distinguish from one another. Nita Pearce, who transcribed it for us, deserves a medal for sticking with the task. This one's enough to give anybody severe eyestrain. I've been working through this census myself also, using the version from S-K Publications, a magnifying glass, and my personal database for the Stokes/Forsyth County area. On the premise that sometimes a second opinion helps, I've just uploaded a second version of the index, with some comments and a few previous unknowns identified. You can reach this annotated index, and all the other Stokes County census records, from a new web page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/nc/stokes/census.html If you were looking for any of the following in Stokes in 1840 and didn't find them, take another look, using the annotated index. I'm not absolutely sure about some of these identifications either; some are just alternative possibilities. If you recognize any of the names and can provide positive identification, please let me know. The ones marked with * are the ones I'm most confident about. *Nicholas Binkley *Jacob Black *Christian Brietz William A. 1. [NCSTOKES-L] Stokes County, NC, Cox Families
    2. Karla Tipton
    3. I've been researching Vernons in Stokes County, and my direct line intermarried with the Cox family -- which may or may not help you. But here's what I have. My source is Julie Vernon, at [email protected] The Cox family was among the first at the Caldwell Settlement (Presbyterian, I think) at Cub Creek, Virginia. In approximately the 1760s, Jonathan Vernon (my ancester) married Mary Cox, daughter of Frederick Cox (who was married to Mildred Estes, daughter of Robert Estes) of Stokes County. Frederick Cox was the son of John Cox and the grandson of William Cox. All of this info I got secondhand. If this is the same family, I would appreciate anything you could share on them. Hopes this helps, Karla

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Stokes Couny, NC Cox Families
    2. I would like to "share and compare" with anyone researching any Stokes County, NC, COX families. Joshua Cox and brother Richard Cox came into what is now Stokes County in the late 1700's and acquired land grants. They were brothers of David Cox and Captain John Cox of Grayson County, Va. Does anyone know anything about a John and Elizabeth Cox of Stokes County? Both were born in NC about 1800. Known children were Alison Cox and James Cox (who removed to Washington County), John Harden Cox b. Feb 1828, and Elizabeth Cox. The four sibblings were listed on a school list in 1844 as the children of John Cox. Does anyone know anything about John Cox, the son of Joshua Cox and Mary Neal? He was born about 1790.

Thanks, Larry Harvey

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Re: Alamander Duncan
    2. Donald L. West
    3. Dear Elke, I was glad to see your request on NCStokes-rootsweb for information on Alamander Duncan. He is my great-great-grandfather. However, there are two Alamander Duncan's. My Alamander Duncan was born 23 Dec 1766 and married Susannah Vaughn 14 Jan 1809 Stokes Co., NC. >From my personal family records of my grandparents Alamander was the Son of John & Dinah Bradford Duncan. But the listed children of John and Dinah does not show a son named Alamander. This is perplexing to me. The other Alamander born 1777 is the son of Joseph and Jimima Marr Duncan. This Alamander married Anne Francis. I am sure there is a connection for both of them somewhere, but just do not know what. My next question is which Alamander are you interested in and do you have information on Alamander's parents. Also you should belong to the "Duncan surname association" they have lots of information on the Duncan's. Let me know if you do not and I will provide you with the information. Next if you have the internet, there are some papers and letters of Landon Duncan's which can be down loaded. Some of these letters are to his cousin Alamander. Let me know and I will provide you with the URL. If you are related to my Alamander, then I have lots of information to share. Best regards to you and your search. Don West - North Edwards, CA

    3. In response to the query posted regarding the Frazier family of Stokes County. There is a good book about the Frazier family of Stokes/Forsyth counties, "Frazier Folks And Related Families" by Barnette, Beeson and Johnson, published 1988. I believe there is a copy in the NC Room of the Forsyth County Library. I have a copy and would be willing to do look ups. I descend from Martha Frazier, wife of Thomas Walker and daughter of Sowell and Temperance Hester Frazier. Please provide a few more details on the Robert Frazier you're looking for.
