Dear Karla, The Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions was roughly a cross between a County Court and a County Council. The handled legal issues, apprenticed orphans, oversaw the building and maintenance of roads, and granted business licenses. The members of the court were appointed rather than elected. I'm not an expert, but in general, thats what it was. Forrest
I am looking for a George Whitfield NORMAN born 1858 married a Georgia NORMAN who died when their son Alexander NORMAN (born abt. 1890) was 7 years old. I believe they lived somewhere around Mecklenburg - Stokes area. Mr. NORMAN remarried sometime after his wife died and had two more children - both girls - Mary and Nona - he moved out to San Diego around 1913 - Alexander stayed in N. C. but I think both of the girls and possibly his wife went to Cal. with him. Mary married a Wirth and Nona married a Chambers. that's about all the info I have on them. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Barbara from SC

Does anyone know exactly what the court of pleas was in charge of in Stokes County? I went through part of a film at the LDS library: Court of Common Pleas, 1790-1803 for Stokes Co., N.C. (LDS film # 0466252) and found all kinds of things in there besides court cases, including wills and land deeds. Can anyone tell me what the "Iron Works" reference below is all about? In 1850 they have the following household: 1850 Forsyth Co. census page 277 Richard Ransom 41 Sarah 26 George W. (Ransom) 8 Jonathan D. Billeter 4 Elizabeth Ransom 11/12 I've been guessing that Jonathan was Sarah's son from a previous marriage. Do you, or anyone else, have information on this? Pauline, Have you been to a Family History Center? There is a Samuel Jackson b 1727 Surry Co N C.Go , to the Ancestry File. Bring up Samuel Jackson b 1727 Surry Co N C mar to a Catherine / b 1730. Get Descendency chart and print it out. You can also take out on a disc. It is about 4/5 pages. May be longer than that now since I got mine in 1995. , if more has been added. Mine is with old style printer and light purple ink. Doesn't copy good. John b 1757 Surry Co Nc. ,a son is on the second page mar to Phebe Beals b 1759 in Pa . They had 13 children Hannah, Nathan, Sarah, Charity, Uriah, Elizabeth, ( mar. Joseph Rooks,) Keziah, William, Amon, Amer(America), Mary, Jessie, This chart lists 2 Uriah, 1 is b 1788 the 2nd is born 1790. It may be the same one or the first one may have died so the next one could have been given the name of the one that died. This was a familiar practice in that time period. With Uriah listed 2 times is 13 ch. Since I didn't see that census of 1790 I don't know how many other persons were living under roof of Samuel or John's home. I believe the John is the Samuel's son who mar. Phebe Beals. They mar. abt 1780 as their first child born 1781. Anyone else have anything to say about this??? I do have more but too much for list. Anyone can go to the F H C and do as I said above and get this chart. Maxine Baldwin Wilton [email protected]

Maria Louisa SIDES (1818-1869) married Robert Alexander RIKE (REICH) (1821-1890) in 1843 at Stokes Co., NC. They moved to Farmersville, Collin Co., TX in Apr 1850. William Philip SIDES (1828-1868) moved to Texas and married Theresa E. ROBERTS (WHITE?) in 1858 at Fannin Co., TX. They had one child, Charles Stanley SIDES (1859-1905). vii. Salome (Sarah) SIDES (1830-1891) married William Caustin (Costin?) JOHNSON (1823-1882) (son of William JOHNSON (1786-1835) and Elizabeth ECCLES (1785-1831). J. Preston PALMER married Elizabeth Jane COLLINS on January 16, 1855. William Preston PALMER married Eliza Jane LAWSON on May 15, 1879. I THINK these two marriages occurred in Stokes County but have no proof. Do any of you have access to marriage records there and could check these 2 for me? Thanks!! Beverly
Hi to NCstokes list, So glad to have this list available. I am looking to verify the children of NICHOLAS DOLL and his wife, MARGARET. Some of the records in Stokes, Surry, and Forsyth Cos. have this family as DOLL, DULL, and/or TULL. The DOLL/DULL name is German. The TULL surname is English, but the records have some of them mixed up and it's difficult to know which is correct and which is incorrect. My NICHOLAS and MARGARET DOLL/DULL have the following verified children: Mary Doll/Dull marr. John Huffines, Surry Co., 26 Mar 1800 Sarah Doll/Dull marr. Frederick Miller Susanna Doll/Dull marr. Peter Binkele Elizabeth Doll/Dull marr. Frederich Binkele George Doll/Dull marr. Catherine (unkmaiden) If there is anyone who is a descendant of any of the above children and can verify there are other children and who they are, I will appreciate it. I am compiling a family history that includes this DOLL/DULL line and am anxious to have the line as accurate as possible. Will be happy to share information in exchange for some accurate information on the Nicholas Doll family. Cheers, Colleen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, February 20, 1999 2:04 PM Subject: NCSTOKES-D Digest V99 #22

LEONARD, SIDES George Washington SIDES Sr. (1800-1894) married Amelia Mary LEONARD (1800-after 1894) in c1825 at probably Davidson or Forsyth County, North Carolina. Soon after marrying they moved to Georgia, then Mississippi and then sometime between 1833 and 1837 to Fayette County, Texas. They later moved to Bastrop County, Texas and finally Williamson County, Texas. They were the parents of seven known children: Richard Elison SIDES (1826-1863); Evy Elizabeth SIDES (1827-1891); William De. O'Daniel SIDES (1829-???), George Washington SIDES Jr. (1831-c1851); Larkin Clark SIDES (1833-???), Philip Leonard SIDES (1837-???) and John Henry Day SIDES (1841-1911). Does anyone know whom the parents of the wife MARY were? I have checked all the LEONARD databases I know of and can't find her. [email protected]
Does anyone know anything abt the William Boyles in 1840 census for Stokes who had 65 slaves. Wm. is found on p. 184 of that census. He was enumerated with these slaves and 2 white males in his household. He apparently was a widower. Wm. was 40-50 yrs of age; the only other white person in his household was a WM age 16-20. Thanks. John Speight
I am interested in sharing and comparing with any researchers of early Stokes County, NC Cox families. My g-g-g-grandparents were John and Elizabeth Cox of Stokes County. Their known children were Allison Cox b ca 1825, James, John b Feb 1828, and Elizabeth. Allison md. Mary Flippin; he and James removed to Washington County, Va in the 1860's. John Cox married Jane George in Surry County in 1855 and lived in Stokes County all of his life. After Jane died, he married Julia Haymore in 1879 in Stokes. I am still searching for the parentage of John Cox b ca 1805 and the maiden name of his wife Elizabeth. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Other early Cox families include Richard and Joshua Cox, brothers that came to Stokes from Grayson County, Va. They were brothers of David Cox and Capt. John Cox of Grayson. John eventually went to Ashe County, NC. S. Turney
