Hello everyone! I purchased a copy of Stokes County Marriages 1839-1887. I purchased it with the hope of locating a marriage between David Anderson and Sarah Ann Pell in 1839. What I didn't know before purchasing the book is that only 22 licenses survive the period between 1839 and 1850. Unfortunately, my marriage wasn't one of them. I will look up marriages for the group to make use of the book now that I have it. I would like to suggest to the Genealogical Society of Rockingham and Stokes County that they rename this book "A Few Early Marriages of Stokes County" and publish the few early ones as a pamphlet. Then publish "Marriage Licenses of Stokes County 1850-1887" as a complete book. The title is misleading unless you know the specific history of marriage licenses in the county. Please post to the group or email me privately. Regards, LAP _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get your free @yahoo.com address at http://mail.yahoo.com
Dear Liz, There are three Blums; Johanna, John, and Louisa all burried in the old section of the Moravian Cemetery in Hope, Indiana (Bartholomew County). There is a very good chance that George Abraham came here during the time period you mention. I believe that I have seen other Blum graves in the "newer" sections of the cemetery, but I do not know of any Blums living in our area currently. Forrest
Looking for information on George Abraham Blum, born August 12, 1820 to Johann David Blum and Sarah Hege in Forsyth County. Married Elisabeth (or Elizabeth) Potts. Had 3 children, Sarah, Lewis and Calvin Nathaniel who was born <1875 in Reidsville? The information I need is what happened to George Abraham. I know he was given about 100+/- acres of land in/near Davie County by his brother. During the Civil War, since he was a Moravian, he took his family to Indiana (county unknown) and he left the land in care of his sister, Charlotte (listed in some places as Susanna Charlotte) who married a Smith. They failed to pay the taxes on it and when George Abraham returned with his wife and children, he found himself to be a pauper. The last census I can find him in is the 1860 Davie County Census. I would like to know where he is buried if possible plus any additional information you may have on this family line. Thanks! Liz Blum Brummond Blum-Potts-Howard-Hege-Fleming-Parham
If anyone can do a lookup for a marriage abt. 1875 of a Charles W. Hardy and Amanda Frances Hunter in Stokes Co. it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, David Hardy Atlanta GA.
I am trying to find the marriage record in Stokes Co for DANIEL FULK and MARIA M. "PEGGY" BOOZE. I have found "three" different dates in my search. June 3, 1811 June 13, 1811 July 2, 1811 Also: Was there an application or bond for marriages at this time. I have found Daniel on the 1820, 1830, and 1850 census. Daniel is possible the son, Nathaniel of John/Johann Adam Volck/Fulk and Maria Sarah Moser. Also looking for the Parents and siblings of Maria M. "Peggy" Booze.
I'd guess that June 3, 1811 was the date they applied for the marriage license, June 13, 1811 was when it was issued and, July 2, 1811 was when they were married. Though it could be that they were married June 13, 1811 and the preacher or JP reported it July 2... Sometimes the documents made by hand that I've looked at on microfilm from Kentucky weren't perfectly clear at a first glance which event they applied to and were on scraps of paper, totally unorganized. I saw reports of bonds in Christian County KY in 1809 also occasional certifications from a parent when the potential bride or groom was under age. Gerald
The 1759 Tax list of Rowan Co includes what is now Stokes Co. would listers please send me ( [email protected] ) any of their ancestors who are on this tax list AS WELL AS WHERE THEY LIVED PRIOR TO STOKES (ROWAN)? I have a feeling that my William Halbrook did not move to Stokes by himself, but have no way now of knowing who he may have moved with. By knowing other family origins from the 1759 tax list, it may help with his origins, which are apparently Maryland, where his apparent grandfather and uncle lived, or Westmoreland Co VA where his father moved and died in 1752. Albert and Emily (YOKELY?) WELCH appear in census records in Forsyth County 1850-1870. Emily died in 1908 and is buried at New Friendship Baptist Church. Is Albert the "Robert" Welch listed in the Forsyth Co. cemetery records at that church, with dates 1822-1893? Who were their parents? John George LAGENAUER (LACHENAUER, LAGENOUR, various other spellings) 1778-1851 and wife Catharina RANK 1783-1848 were associated with Friedland Moravian Church in Stokes/Forsyth Co. NC. He was the grandson of Johann Georg LAGENAUER (1730-1757), one of the settlers of the Waldo colony at Broad Bay, Maine, originally from Durlach, Baden, Germany. I'm trying to put this family together and have some questions about some connecting links. 1) Who was Catharina RANK's father? Early RANKE men in this area include George Michael RANKE 1729-1813 Gottlieb RANK or RANCK 1731-1822 Johannes RANKE 1737-1798 Any of these might be her grandfather or possibly even her father; I'm open to other possibilities also! Can anyone fill me in on their families? 2) Did John George and Catharina Lagenauer have any children besides the four daughters named in his will: Elizabeth, Maria, Salome, and Anna Catharina? 3) All four of these daughters married SWAIM men: Elizabeth m. Moses SWAIM (1802-1843), who is identified in Friedland graveyard records (Forsyth Co. Cemetery Records series) as the son of J. and D.(M.) Swaim. Who were they? In 1850 Elizabeth is a widow with three children. Where is she in 1860? Salome m. John SWAIM. They are in Forsyth County through 1860, and had children Anna Cathariina, John George, Andrew and Parmenio. Is he the John Swaim who died in 1863 and is buried at Friedland? And is she the Salome Swaim buried there with dates 1815-1884? This birthdate is several years later than what would be predicted from the census records for her. Parmenio Swaim died at age 20 and is buried at Friedland, which does suggest a continuing association of this family with that church. Who are John Swaim's parents? Anna Catharina (1817-1912) married Silas SWAIM in 1840. In 1850 they appear in the Forsyth Co. census with five children: Charles, Edith L.[Louisa], Emily Maria, Phebe P., and William L.[Levi]. In 1860 they are shown with these and two more, Julia and Eliza, who are listed as teenagers, thus apparently born before 1850. However, in 1870, Julia and Eliza appear again, considerably younger, suggesting that they may actually be born between 1850 and 1860. Can anyone confirm the dates for these children for me? Are they definitely the children of Silas and Anna Catharina? Who are Silas Swaim's parents? Is Phebe P. Swaim, daughter of Silas and Anna Catharina, the Phebe (1847-1884) who married Eli Swaim, son of Jesse Swaim and Magdalena Lanius? There are two marriages in the Stokes County records for Maria or Mary Lagenauer, to William SWAIM in 1829 and to Levi SWAIM in 1833. Which of these is Maria, daughter of John George and Catharina Lagenauer? Are her dates 1812-1876, buried Friedland Moravian? Researching Banks family of Stokes Co. Believe many descend from John Banks Sr. who moved to Stokes Co. from Franklin Co., Va., about 1793 and disappears after 1805. His sons John Banks Jr. (died 1808 in Stokes Co.) married Agnes Markham in Franklin Co. John Jr. and Samuel were in Stokes by 1790. Samuel probably moved to Harrison Co., Ind., by 1820 and Jackson Co. by 1830 as did Hennis Banks, a presumed son. Other presumed children of John Sr. are David Backs and Ellender? Banks who m. Burrell Lawson. Is there a connection with the Hennis family. Both Banks and Hennis can be found in Prince George Co., Md. Did they move together to Va. in the mid 1700s
