    2. Judy Brooks
    3. Is there a written record of people buried in Stokes County cemeteries? I am still trying to find where my grandfather, ISAAC S. BOYLES, might have spent his final days. Since Stokes county was his home in college years (1890-95), I thought he might have returned there to die. Thank you for any suggestions. Judy BOYLES Brooks Mendocino, CA 95460

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] $100 REWARD: Find the Parents of Henry J. Woods (b 1826) NC/SC/TN
    2. Brett Woods
    3. As those of you who have suffered through my innumerable queries for the last year or so realize, I am quite serious about tracing my ancestry. However, I have exhausted the resources available here in New Mexico, and seem to be at a dead end with the queries and other online databases. I have previously placed a reward notice. It worked. I found the individual for whom I was searching in about two days, and the researcher received a cashier's check. As I understand it, the search was not that difficult as they had access to relevant archival material and considerably more experience in genealogical research. Accordingly, I thought I would try it once more and am offering a $100 reward to the first researcher who can identify the parents of my great-great-grandfather Henry J. Woods who was born (depending upon which census one believes) in either NC or SC in about 1826. On the 1860 Spartanburg County SC Census, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Father: Henry J. Woods (b. 1826) various censuses indicate both a NC or SC birth Wife: Mary H. Woods (b SC 1822) (possibly a Lynch?) Children: Nathan J Woods (b SC 1851) Lynch E. Woods (b SC 1846) female (perhaps a previous Woods-Lynch marriage?) James H. Woods (b SC 1848) (my great-grandfather) John B. Woods (b SC 1849) William B. Woods (b SC 1850) Thomas J. Woods (b SC 1854) Luther L. Woods (b SC 1856) Margaret C. Woods (b SC 1858) Robert H. Woods (b SC 1859) It should be noted that the LDS entry on Henry's family is incorrect...possibly due to the fact it was evidently taken from the 1860 Spartanburg County Census which is fairly illegible. The children Luther and Margaret were identified from later Censuses, specifically the 1870 and 1880 Greene County TN rolls. Regarding Henry's parents, the clues, I suppose, lie somewhere in either North or South Carolina birth, deed, probate or census records. However, as I posted last night, I personally feel -- but cannot make the connection -- that Henry may well be the son of one of the following Woods families that show up on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Spartanburg County SC Censuses: 1. James Woods b. 1788 - wife Rachel (Hawkins?) b. 1797 SC. James and Rachel had at least four children: Susan b. 1829; Nathan Richmond b. 22 Sept 1831; Elizabeth b. 1833; and William James (James William) b. 4 Oct 1839. 2. William Woods b. 1780 - wife Jane (Babb?) b 1785. William and Jane (according to LDS-consider the source) had the following children: Clarissa b. 1808; Abner b. 1809; Susan b. 1812; Hugh b. 1814; Kellet b 1816; Larissa b. 1820; Polly b. 1879; Nancy b. 1824; William b. 1827; Martha b. 1829; Martin b. 1831; and Harvey Harney b. 1833. 3. John Woods b. 1787 - wife Agnes (unknown) b. 1790. 4. Robert Woods b. 1788 - wife Jane b. 1790. I have not yet determined if James, William, Robert and John are brothers. Nor do I have a clue as to their parent' identity. And again, this is just a guess on my part. Obviously, due to the similarities of names, it would appear that Henry would most likely descend from James and Rachel (there was even a Nathan in that family). Further, my great-grandfather James H. Woods b. 1848, named his first born daughter Rachel...but perhaps this is merely a coincidence. James ended up marrying an Elizabeth Fox (daughter of Isaac Fox) and living in Greene County TN. If you are interested in this project, or have the relevant information, please contact me. However, aside from this entry, and as a matter of courtesy to others, please E-mail me directly do not post your replies to this list. If requested, I will then provide you my telephone numbers and addresses, as well as any other material you feel is necessary to verify the legitimacy of my offer. In any event, I hope this will spark some interest from an individual who feels they might just be up to the challenge of finding Henry's parents and receive $100 for their efforts. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico Please Note: I will, of course, verify the information.

    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. Marceline Beem has created a new gravestone inscriptions database for NCGenWeb, similar to the marriage database she did earlier. We haven't announced this widely yet, because we want to be sure that it's functioning correctly. However, Marceline and I have decided to announce it to a few select e-mail lists that we happen to be involved with ourselves. If all goes well, we'll announce it statewide on Monday. Feel free to start entering data if you'd like, and definitely let us know if you encounter any problems (email link is provided on the main page). Although neither of us expects to be on-line 24 hours a day over the weekend <G>, we'll try to respond as quickly as we can. The URL http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~marce/ncarolina/cemetery.html This database will complement the Tombstone Transcription project that's already on-line as part of the NCGenWeb archives, and will enable users to enter individual burial records that aren't part of full cemetery transcriptions. 3. Looking for information about this Dillon family: Thomas F. Dillon (B: 1851 D: 1918 in Guilford Co, NC) sp: Mildred Collins (B: 1849 in Stokes Co, NC D:1921). They had at least 3 children: Perry T. Dillon (B:1871 D: 1918) Jettie A. Dillon (B:1880) Minnie Esther Dillon (B: 1883 possibly in Bluefield, Mercer Co, WVa. D:1962) Thomas' middle name may have been Flenoy, Flenroy, or Flournoy. This family is listed in both the 1880 and 1900 census for Stokes Co, North Carolina. Any help about this family would be appreciated. Gary Shankle in Deer Park, Texas

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] 1815 Tax List, Stokes
    2. karla
    3. Hi all, I just purchased the Stokes Co. 1815 Tax List (Annotated Transcriptions) by Jo White Linn (privately published), through Amazon.com, for $20. It has helped me with my research quite a lot, and I'd like to share. The names are indexed by last name only and the 66-age book is divided by "district." I'm willing to do look ups in this book, as long as you provide me with as specific information as possible (such as first name, last name, and district, whenever you have it.) The information it provides includes head of household, how many white or black "polls" are in the household, acreage owned and how much it is worth. It is presented alphabetically, so the makeup of the "neighborhood" is not reflected, (other than that certain names appear in the same district). If anyone has access to any Stokes County tax records after 1815 (but not beyond 1827), and wouldn't mind looking up my Foster TILLEY, and others of the same surname in the same district (Stone Chimney) as well as any VERNONs in the same district, I would be very grateful. Sincerely, Karla Tipton

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] William and/or Henry Wood(s) (Born 1792 and 1826 in NC)
    2. Brett Woods
    3. Does anyone have a clue as to what family a William Woods, born ABT 1792 in NC descends? William shows up on the 1860 Spartanburg County SC census (Fort Prince P.O.) with a wife named Elizabeth born ABT 1791, also in NC. Please keep in mind that the name may well have been Wood (without the s) in NC. There are no Woodses whatsoever on the 1850 Spartanburg County Census, and the only Woods "head of household" on the 1860 Spartanburg County Census are this William, and my elusive gggrandfather Henry J. Woods (b NC 1826). On the 1860 Spartanburg County Census, Henry's family is enumerated as follows: Father: Henry J. Woods (b. NC 1826) Wife: Mary H. Woods (b SC 1822) Children: Nathan J Woods (b SC 1851) Lynch E. Woods (b SC 1846) female (perhaps a previous Woods-Lynch marriage?) James H. Woods (b SC 1848) (my great-grandfather) John B. Woods (b SC 1849) William B. Woods (b SC 1850) Thomas J. Woods (b SC 1854) Luther L. Woods (b SC 1856) Margaret C. Woods (b SC 1858) Robert H. Woods (b SC 1859) As both William and Henry, seemingly from nowhere, appear in Spartanburg SC in time for the 1860 Census, and they both were born in NC, perhaps they are somehow connected? Or perhaps it it just another coincidence. In any event, Henry's family ended up, by 1870, moving on to Greene County , TN. Thanks for any help. Brett F. Woods Santa Fe, New Mexico

Ruth, There is a great genealogical library in Bassett, VA a few miles west of Martinsville, VA. It is called the Blue Ridge Regional Library. Their Historical Center is housed in a large building which held the entire library until last year. If you wish to call them for more information, the telephone number is 540-629-9191. Married Elizabeth Ladd about 1777, son John Ripley born 1778. Moved to Patrick Cty. about 1796, then to NC about 1808, then to Jackson Cty,Oh after 1810 where he died. These may give you some clues as to where to look and who to look for. I didn't copy the 1850 online Census because you said you had it. Good Luck, Jo in MN

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] My CORN Line
    2. I haven't ever "officially" introduced myself or let anyone know precisely what lines I am tracing (or trying to!). My name is Ruth. I am happily wed to a native Michigander. I, myself, am not native to any one state, but I was born in Stuart, Patrick County, Virginia in the R. J. Reynolds Memorial Hospital. My father is still living on the same plot of land in Stokes County, NC where he was born. I am trying to schedule a trip to visit with him for a week (and to pick his brain and his basement <G>). I got into genealogy full force about three years ago, when my then 14-year-old brother had to do a class project . . . his family tree. The more names and dates he had, the more extra credit he would get. So, daddy spent a lot of Saturday hours in the cemeteries near the house (BTW, Daddy got an A <G>). From his cemetery "digging" and his own personal knowledge I have the following: Samuel Jackson Corn (b 22 January 1858/59; d 4 December 1945) married Mary Virginia Doss their son -- James Henry Corn (b 22 January 1883, Patrick Co., VA; d 08 August 1975) married Bertha B. Handy (b 4 September 1883, Patrick Co., VA; d 3 March 1947, Stuart, Patrick Co.,VA) their son -- Curvie James Corn (b 18 August 1909, Patrick Co., VA; d 28 March 1989, Walnut Cove, NC) married Ruth Emma Moore (b 28 March 1908; d 04 February 1970, Lawsonville, Stokes Co., NC) on 27 or 28 February 1929 their son -- Worth Curvie Corn (b 01 May 1939, Lawsonville, Stokes Co., NC) married Yvonne Zay Smith (b 28 April 1953, Bethesda, MD) on 03 June 1970 in Lawsonville, Stokes Co., VA their daughter -- Ruth Yvonne Corn (b 14 April 1972, Stuart, Patrick Co., VA) -- Me! So, here is my quandary. It is told that Samuel's father was Richard Corn who married Naomi (also spelled Naoma) Ingram, and that Richard's father is George Thomas Corn whose father was Jesse Corn. I have copies from the 1860 and 1880 census with Richard and Naoma and their various children listed (there is a Samuel). I then have a copy from the 1900 census with Samuel as head of household with his wife, Mary V., and their children at the time. So, I can establish the link between Richard and Samuel (my father personally met Samuel and the rest of them during his lifetime, so they are not presently in question). However, I can not put Richard with George with any verification. There are articles in Heritage books that put them together, but these are not proof. When I searched the 1850 census online, I did not find my Richard as head of household, so on the advice of fellow listers, I searched under the surname only. There is no George Corn listed as a head of household, either. But there is a Richard on the census, and he is approximately the same age (it's off by one year, but even the census takers made minor mistakes) . . . but his father is John Corn. I don't even HAVE a John Corn!!! Anyway, I am going to be in Stokes Co. sometime in the next few weeks, and I plan to head over to Patrick Co., VA to check the library (there are Heritage books there -- I'm going to make some photocopies.). Can anyone suggest where I might stop in to get information for my Richard and HIS ancestors? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the length of my post! Ruth Corn Roy
