    1. [NCSTOKES-L] tax list vs state census ??
    2. JC Halbrooks
    3. In 1786 Stokes co. was part of Surrey Co. There is a Surrey Co. tax list plus a state census of 1786. In the Surrey Co Tax list there are THREE Holbrook, two in Hills District. In the state census only ONE is enumerated. At the end of it, in someone else's district three names ( not Holbrook) are marked and a note is given that they are in Hills District. Otherwise, I cannot find any Hills District in the State census. Does anyone know if it is located elsewhere or if it was omitted/lost? I am using the printed state census, 2nd edition, 1971, and photocopies obtained from Dobson Court house for Surrey Co Tax list. -- JC Halbrooks 357 Snake Meadow Hill Road Sterling CT 06377 USA HOLBROOK, HALBROOK(S), etc. ANY TIME, ANY PLACE

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Marriage records/migration roots
    2. Joy and Jim Brown
    3. Hi - I have a two part request - My great-grandparents, James Edward Sisk and Mary Eliza Lawson, married in Stokes County in 1881. I don't know exact date or place. If anyone has access to marriage records of Stokes County for this period, I would appreciate a look-up. Would this record be stored at the courthouse in Danbury? Susan Ann Lawson (sister of the above Mary Eliza), her husband, Jim, and their family along with Coley Pringle Collins and other left Stokes County in September 1891 headed for northwestern Arkansas (Eureka Springs area). The trip took them approximately two months. I would like to learn about the route they traveled, etc. Does anyone know what the normal migration route would have been? Upon arrival in Arkansas, the Lawsons settled near their cousins, Bill and William Henry Collins (sons of Coley Pringle Collins), who had made the move some years previously. Any information about any of these people, suggestions and ideas, will be appreciated. Thanks. Joy Gann Brown

    1. [NCSTOKES-L] Maps, clickable!!
    2. Teague Family
    3. Hello, LIst, Karla asked about a map that shows districts. This isn't exactly it, but The Library of Congress has a website that has a huge database called American Memory, Historical Collections. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/finder.html The URL for the exact page was too long to put on, so go to site above, click on Maps. There are maps for Cities and Towns, some aerial. All the ones I looked at can be zoomed in or out. There are also old Railroad Maps, including one of NC at 1839. It does show the towns at that time, which might help with the districts. Lots of other stuff there, perhaps you'll hook up with other family tree locations, too. Have fun! Becky
