Hi! I'm new to the list. There are so many Tilley's out there in census records for Stokes County in the 1800s I'm hoping there are still some of their descendants around. I'm looking for information regarding the wife of James Tilley of Ashe County (he later moved to Surry). His wife was named Letty, Leitha, or Letitia Tilley. I found a source that said she was from Stokes County; I thought maybe she was a cousin. From census ages she was born about 1832, and married James in 1858. I can't prove it, but I think James was the grandson of Edmund Tilley of Ashe County. He's probably related to the Tilleys of Stokes also, but I don't know how. By chance have any of you heard of these people? Thanks Karen Worley
Hi Ronnie, My letter to you came back so I will try here. Do you have a Mary Elizabeth Hartgrove in you family. She was born around 1850. Their daughter Cornelia Martin (3-12-1870 to 8-28-1947) married Elisha Milton Windsor in Yadkin Co. NC. Their other children were Ollie Martin, Victoria, Stella, Mannie and Ethel Martin. Searching for information on the Hartgrove's of Stokes Co. Especially interested in information concerning Catherine Hartgrove (born ca. 1776 died ca. 1850-1860) and her three illegitimate sons: Bartlett (born 1800), Hampton (born ca. 1812) and Martin (born ca. 1820). Would like to confirm identity of children's father. There is a bastard bond in Stokes for Bartlett listing Peter Frey (then moved to Rowan Co. in 1800 at the time of birth) as his father and it has been said that the same was father to both Hampton and Martin. Any information at all appreciated. Ronnie
Need to know the location of " Moore Cemetery ", is this a private family cemetery or a public one ? Thanks, Gary

I think I'd start with the loose estates records at the NC state archives, looking for Taylor and also VanHook in Forsyth County. These files are organized by county, and within the county, by surname. Which county were they in before he died? Did she specifically say "Winston AND Salem"? That's a clue also. These two towns weren't consolidated into the city of Winston-Salem until 1913, which might put a later limit on the transaction. For what it's worth, I don't see any mention of these people in the Forsyth Co. will abstracts (1849-1917) published by the Forsyth Co. genealogical society. We took the plung on July 4 and put up the research on the Dearing/Deering and Miller lines that we have accumulated for the past 40 years. There are a lot of surnames involved, but the "name list" makes it easy to take a quick look to see if we connect or not. Please go in and check it out, if you have something to add, please advise me as I am always happy to receive more information. I am hoping this will help with your research as well as mine.
