Well, I would say the name Southerland could be of Scottish origin. One of the northern regions of the highlands was called Sutherland. What, Sutherland in the North? This area was named for the southern region of the Vikings' land. The Duke and Duchess of Sutherland lived in Golspie at Dunrobbin Castle. I'm sure many took their name or the surname was to mean "from" the region of Sutherland. Just a thought.
