    3. Rootsweb has started a new service for mailing lists http://archiver.rootsweb.com/NCSCOTS-L/ It allows you to browse the messages (in a somewhat threaded format) and do keyword searches. Messages are broken up into one month intervals for browsing purposes. A user name and password are required. This was necessary in order to keep out e-mail harvesting 'bots (spammers) from getting list members' addresses. Benson Wills listowner btw@usa.net

    2. Maureen, Although we have been open for contribution of articles, etc., from all parts of NC and from all parts of Scotland our material has come mostly from Argyll and the Eastern part of North Carolina. Have you tried sending queries to Clan Campbell Society on your John Campbell? Dr. Ruby Campbell is genealogist of Clan Campbell Society and does the Query pages in our Argyll Colony Plus. We have people who fuss about the lack of material on such places as Skye. We just don't get material from there, DR Campbell's address is 3310 Fairway Dr. Baton Rouge, LA 70809 Hope that you will join both the Clan Cambell Society and the North Carolina Scottish Heritage Society. One or both may help you

    1. James Ferguson of Cumberland Co., NC
    2. Doug Purcell
    3. Seeking information on James or James B. FERGUSON of Cumberland County, NC. Both men would have been born between 1775 and 1794. In 1817 one of these men was probably married to Sally MALLOY, daughter of Duncan MALLOY. Both are listed in the 1820 census of Cumberland Co., NC with three children each under the age of ten. James FERGUSON'S wife was born between 1775 and 1794 while James B. FERGUSON'S wife was born between 1794 and 1804. Other FERGUSON heads of household in the 1820 Cumberland Co., NC census included Daniel and John but I believe they were too old to be the husband of Sally Malloy. Thanks for any help offered. 3. I have a copy of page 29 from "Muster Rolls of the Soldiers of the War of 1812 Detached from the Militia of North Carolina in 1812 and 1814" which was originally published in Raleigh, NC in 1851 and later reprinted in 1926 and 1976. The last reprint was by the Genealogical Publishing Company of Baltimore. On this page is information about the "Tenth Company, detached from the Richmond Regiment". If someone has a copy of this book would you please check to see what brigade and regiment this company served under? I believe the information is in the first part of the book. Also there were a total of eleven companies in this regiment. Thanks for any help offered. Doug Purcell 633 North Randolph Avenue Eufaula, AL 36027-1209 dpurcell@the-link.net

    3. NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB 163,035,217 EMAIL MESSAGES AND A LOT MORE. In March, RootsWeb supported the following for the Internet genealogical community: o 4,030 independently authored Web sites. o 108,887,834 total Web hits: 28,801,459 were HTML pages. 17,209,828 were cgi-bin database searches and such. 62,815,960 were graphics (GIFs, JPEGs, etc.). o 2,154,058 file downloads from the USGenWeb Archives and the ROOTS-L Library. o 6,100 independently operated RootsWeb-hosted mailing lists. o 163,035,217 pieces of e-mail shipped to our mailing lists. That's about a 14% increase in traffic just since January. What folks may not realize is just what those numbers mean. It takes a huge amount of bandwidth to transfer all these Web pages and e-mail messages to the Internet, and RootsWeb's monthly Internet costs have grown from about $10,000 to about $12,000 in just the last two months. It also takes about 30 servers (very large computers) to handle all these Web pages and mailing lists, and RootsWeb is having to spend $10,000 or more each month adding new servers and upgrading its older servers to keep up with demand. No government agency or big corporation pays for RootsWeb: we're entirely supported by contributions made by users like you. If you like the support RootsWeb is providing for the genealogical community and if you want help RootsWeb provide even better support for the community, please consider supporting us and becoming a RootsWeb Contributor: <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> or send e-mail to: <RW-info@rootsweb.com> RootsWeb's address is: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, P.O. 1. Battle of Elizabethtown, NC--August 27, 1781
    2. Doug Purcell
    3. Seeking information on the Battle of Elizabethtown, North Carolina which took place on August 27, 1781. At this battle the Whigs (patriots) broke Tory (loyalists) power in Bladen County by driving them into "Tory Hole" a deep ravine along the banks of the Cape Fear River. Many tories were killed at this battle. Has anyone ever written an article on this event? Has a roster of participants ever been prepared similar to the patriot and loyalist rosters assembled by Bobby Moss for those engaged in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge on February 27, 1776? I would appreciate receiving any and all information that anyone may have on this battle. The information above is from "The North Carolina Gazetteer: A Dictionary of Tar Heel Places" by William S. Powell. Thanks for any help offered. Doug Purcell 633 North Randolph Avenue Eufaula, AL 36027-1209 dpurcell@the-link.net

    2. Elizabeth Harris
    3. Lynda Smith, our county coordinator for Cumberland County NCGenWeb, needs to turn this site over to someone who has more time to devote to it. Lynda has done a terrific job on this page, and I know she'll be a tough act to follow, but I'm hoping I can find someone who can meet the challenge. Cumberland is an important county in NC history, so this site gets a lot of queries and discussion. If possible, I would like the next county coordinator to be someone who is actively researching ancestors there and is familiar with the local records and names. The current page is at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccumber/cumberland.htm The new county coordinator will be able to take over this page and its contents, and Lynda will provide some help in the transition period. You can get some general information on what's required of county coordinators from the following web page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncunknow/orphan.html or write me with your questions.
