    1. change in welcome message
    2. Benson
    3. Some activity in *another* list that I manage has prompted me to change the welcome message that all new subscribers get. This change will also affect ncscots-L, as I'm not keen on having separate rules for different lists. I'm sending it out here for the benefit of current subscribers...this is the changed part: ***IMPORTANT*** Since starting NCSCOTS-L several years ago, I really have had very few problems. But the list has grown to the point where some ground rules need to be laid out. If you choose not to play nicely with others, you will be banished from the list. Discussions that go off-topic happen occasionally. Sometimes a message is CC'd to the list by accident. When this happens, I'll send a message to the list reminding everyone to keep to the subject. Time does not permit me to send separate reminders to every individual involved. If you choose to ignore me and send out another off-topic message anyway, whether you started the thread or just chimed in later, you will be banished. And please, don't add to the chaff by sending out "Stop sending these messages" messages. Too, I do not accept suggestions as to who needs to be exiled. I know this sounds harsh, but there are hundreds of list members here that deserve and expect a well-managed list. My job is to make it happen. -----end quoted material------- Send any replies to me, not the list! btw@usa.net ncbeach@ncbeach.net

    1. Re: MURDOCK MCLEOD
    2. Nora, I hope you received my e-mail re the North Carolina Scottish Heritage Society, its Journal THE ARGYLL COLONY PLUS that I sent to NCSCOTS-L recently. I am not a professional genealogist. For the past 14 years have edited the AC+ and helped edit a few books on NC Scots. I included info on books in e-mail to NCSCOTS-L. There is a lot of McLeod information, including several Murdocks in our 650 page book CORRESPONDENCE AND DOCUMENTS PERTAINING TO THE BETHUNE, KEAHEY, MCLEOD, MCFARLAND PATTERSON and other Related Scottish Highlander Families of North Carolina. We have recently found a source of information on North Carolina Mcleods and are serializing it in the Argyll Colony Plus. Our last issue had 20 pages and the next will have about the same. It tells how the McLeods lived in Skye and about their coming to settle in the area of what is today Ft Bragg, NC. There are Murdocks mentioned. I don't have time to research for you -- just telling you where you might find what you are searching for. Happy Hunting, Col. Vic Clark

Regartds -- Judy >> A list I have of the septs of Clan MacKenzie does not include MacKimsey; however, I am merely a family clan member. You could subscribe to Clan-Mackenzie-L@rootsweb.com and ask the clan chief or his lieutenants themselves about this family name. If you simply want to get in touch with the office you listed above, there is a great article explaining all about it in THE FAMILY TREE newsletter from Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library. See if it has the same information on their website at www.teleport.com/~binder/famtree.shtml. Good luck....you can also go to www.clanmackenzie.com and it has a list of septs. www.tartans.com might let you search for the clan it is a sept of if you can't find it with mackenzie. 1. Malcolm & Beatrice Purcell Granite Marker
    2. Doug Purcell
    3. In April 1932 a brochure was produced which was addressed to the living descendants of Malcolm PURCELL and Beatrice TORREY Purcell and the living descendants of Daniel McEACHERN and Beatrice TORREY Purcell McEachern as well as all living TORREY relatives in North Carolina and living descendants of those who migrated to Mississippi and Louisiana. This was a fund raising effort composed of the Robeson and Cumberland County committees of the Colonial Dames of America which were "...promoting the project of erecting, on State Highway No. 22, in or near the present city of Fayetteville, North Carolina, a granite marker in memory of Malcolm Purcell and Beatrice Torrey Purcell, Revolutionary patriots. Former Governor Angus Wilton McLEAN of North Carolina, one of the descendants of Malcolm and Beatrice Torrey Purcell, was involved in this fund raising undertaking on behalf of the Colonial Dames. The granite marker was to be erected near the spot on the Cape Fear River where Malcolm Purcell was allegedly killed in 1776 by the Tories. It was to include a suitable inscription commemorating the patriotic services of "...these early patriots". A few years ago I contacted the Colonial Dames of America via snail mail to try and determine whether the granite marker had ever been erected. To my knowledge there is no record of its existence in Cumberland County. No one with the Colonial Dames had any memory of this project nor were there any extant records or minutes that may reflect on the success of this cause. Surely someone must know something about this effort. Perhaps there is an account in one of the Fayetteville or Lumberton newspapers. Why was the granite marker never erected? It was supposed to have been dedicated, according to the brochure, in late May or early June of 1932 or 1933. Contributions for this project were to be sent to Miss Genevieve McMILLAN of Red Springs, North Carolina. Other members of the committee included:John E. PURCELL of Atlanta, GA who was chairman; Dr. A. E. BAKER of Charleston, S. C.; Walter McNEILL of Lakeland, FL; Mrs. George T. BULLOCK of Red Springs, N. C.; Judge N. A. SINCLAIR of Fayetteville, N. C.; Archibald McEACHERN of Raeford, N. C.; Mrs. Lou FULMORE of Wilson, N. C.; Miss Beatrice SINCLAIR of Raeford, N. C.; and Dr. A. C. BETHUNE of Raeford, N. C. I would appreciate receiving any new leads which I can follow-up to try and unravel this mystery to include any new contacts with the Colonial Dames of America from Cumberland County and Robeson County. On request I will be happy to mail a copy of the brochure which explains in more detail the purposes for which the money was being solicited. Monies were also requested for several grave restorations. Thanks very much for any help offered.
