Thanks, Joe & John, for helping us all learn how to post to the list properly.Sometimes, after reading the original post over & over 5 times or so becausethe person responding has clicked on "Reply to Author," & their message is just added to the original message - over & over!- I just delete all the postings for that day. There just isn't time to keep reading that message again for the SIXTH time! Thanks again. Mary Jane

Hi Group, I would like to add one thing to Joe's post. It is very important to insure that your replies are directed properly, especially if you include personal information such as your smail address. If not, it is not only an annoyance to the group, it becomes a very real security problem for the sender. Don't mean to be preaching, just trying to be helpful. My fellow NC-SCOTS readers, I am not the administrator of this list...just a subscriber. However, there appear to be several people on here who are inexperienced at working with listservs. Since I am just a fellow reader, you are under no obligation to follow my advice. However, be aware that you may be annoying several people by continuing certain habits. If you wish to please the rest of us AND shorten your mail download, feel free to follow these suggestions: 1) If you wish to unsubscribe, please do not send such listserv commands to the general message distribution address. The whole subscriber base receives your request and it doesn't work anyway. When you subscribed, more than likely you received a FAQ file which details how to maintain your subscription. (Sending your "unsubscribe" request to the message list multiple times doesn't make work any better than the first time.) 2) If you are sending a reply to one specific person and no one else has any interest in it (i.e., the "free issue" responses with mailing addresses), please make sure to send it directly to the originator. By default, when you hit "reply" on a listserv message, the list address is filled in your destination field. On most e-mail programs, you can hit "reply to all" and delete the list address from the destination field. That will leave only the person you wish to send it to. All these "me too" messages get distributed to every single subscriber, which lengthens their mail downloads and takes up much more server space than it should. 3) If you are a digest subscriber, as I am, please change the subject of your replies to something appropriate to your message. Like many people, I subscribe to the digest version because my spare time is at a premium and this allows me to browse the messages for anything of interest. When you leave a subject like "Re: Digest 1234", it will probably get skipped by many digest subscribers. I hope this helps make the listserv experience more pleasurable for all of us... Thanks Joe D. Deaver jdeaver@eaze.net

Hi Vicki, In response to your message on Fri, 30 Apr 1999 to NCSCOTS-L@rootsweb.com about the various spellings of McGLAUGHON: I quickly scanned through a couple of Pitt County, NC sources at hand, plus the current Greenville/Pitt Co. phone book, and came up with the following spelling variations of McGLAUGHON used in Pitt County. I am sure I have seen other spellings (or mis-spellings) but didn't look through all sources to find them. Notice, I didn't find the spelling McGLAUGHON in any of these sources. Chronicles of Pitt County, NC - McGLOHON McGLOHAN McGLAWHORN McLAWHON McLAWHORN Pitt Co. Cemeteries Vol. I & Vol. II - McGLOHON McGLOHORN McLAWHORN McGLAWHORN Greenville/Pitt Co. phone book 1998-99 - MAGGLONE 1 McCLAUHORN 1 McGLOHON - 20 McGLONE - 2 McLAWHON - 8 McLAWHORN - 176 - by far the most popular spelling in Pitt County today others I remember seeing somewhere - MACKLAN ? McLARAN ? MEGLOHON We also have McGOWAN / McGOWEN McGOUNS / McGOUNDS (the spellings used in my great-grandmother's Bible) but I doubt that is a derivation of McGLAUGHON. (my opinion) Somebody correct me if I am wrong. I have both McGLOHON and McGOWAN ancestors, but most of my McGLOHON cousins now use the McLAWHORN spelling. - Trish

I am responding to the suggestion for the new genealogy search engine recomended by a subscriber: GeneaologyPortal. I checked it out and did not see a privacy policy stated. This site may be useful to many, but I caution about sites without privacy policies for the reason that many are tools to collect direct and target marketing lists. I work at the Federal Trade Commission where we regularly monitor this kind of activity on behalf of consumers. So anyone who thinks this message is being sent by a competitor is just absolutely wrong.
