I am interested in information on 3 McGregor families who may have come to NC from Scotland and later moved on to TN. I do not know if they are connected, but suspect they may be. William McGregor and possible brother John McGregor of Northampton Co., NC May have married sisters Sarah and Mary Flowers of NC (daughters of Ransford Flowers). Came to NC after the Prince Charles Rebelion. Of William I have: This William McGregor came to this country from Scotland after the Prince Charles Rebellion. He was appointed Colonel of the Militia by Gov. Johnson of NC. Because William McGregor refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Crown of England and actually "rejoiced" when the British were defeated, gov. Johnson had to stand trial for his decision. (source: Colonial Records of NC; book 4 - pages 926, 931, 933, 937, 938, 940) Rev. William McGregor of Montgomery Co., NC - I believe now Stanly Co., NC (born in Scotland most likely) Don't have good birth dates for this man. *William McGregor ("Magreger" in the deed) bought the land on 01 July 1778. *Signed a petition in Feb. 1779. *Listed as having 500 acres of land on tax lists, 1780-82. William Bartlett McGregor or Bartlett McGregor also of Montgomery Co., NC. Moved his family to Stewart Co., TN. May have been bornin Montgomery Co. NC. Possible parents are William McGregor and Ann Flowers or I have also seen his father listed as William Bartlett McGregor and Margaret (unknown). Any leads or information would be appreciated. Willing to share all I have about their descendents and connect you with others researching these lines. Also interested in any information about the Flowers families which might connect with the Flowers mentioned. Ransford Flowers was either from VA or NC. Father may have been Henry Flowers Jr. Brother - David Flowers. Information I have on these families may be mixed together as often happens and I am trying to sort them out to see who belongs to whom and how they may be related to each other. Thanks AmyAnn

I am descended from James Watt, who was born in Scotland (exact location unknown) in 1729. He immigrated with his brother William first to Maryland, then both settled in North Carolina. James lived in Iredell county, N.C. near present day Statesville. He married a woman named Mary (whose surname is thought to be Bartholomew.) James is buried at the Fourth Creek Presbyterian Church cemetery in Statesville. I am descended from two of his children: Ann Watt, who married John Henry Petchey and Jane Watt, who married James Wood. Julia Hill
Seeking a good reference source which explains Scotlands regional/parish boundaries or political divisions in the 18th and 19th centuries. For instance I understand that Knapdale was a single parish until 1734 when it was split into North and South Knapdale. Having such a reference would help in pin-pointing the place of residence of some of my Scots ancestors. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks for any help offered. Occasionally I send these to the list to help in Rootsweb's plight: WHY DOES ROOTSWEB NEED YOUR SUPPORT? by Dr. Brian Leverich <leverich@rootsweb.com> Sometimes it is difficult for users to understand the costs involved in operating RootsWeb and why it is worth genealogists' time and money to support RootsWeb. For example, take the United States census. RootsWeb is currently providing server support to the USGenWeb Archives and Census Projects as they bring the U.S. census online. Our goal is to have both a searchable index to the census *AND* images of all the pages available on an open basis for all Internet genealogists. Our best estimate is that bringing the census online will require about 3.6 terabytes of data storage. That means we will need about 200 18 GB hard disks, and each of those disks costs about $1,000. That means the data storage alone is going to cost $200,000, and that doesn't include the servers and the bandwidth to make that storage accessible over the Web. Is $200,000 a lot of money? Well, sort of. Regardless of how much they want to help, Karen and Brian couldn't pay for that even if they mortgaged their house and cashed in their pension savings. On the other hand, $200,000 is only about 67 cents per user at RootsWeb. That is about 1/100 of what some commercial firms are charging for data they have locked up in members-only areas. Bringing the U.S. census online is not the only project RootsWeb supports. We are hosting literally hundreds of other data projects, some American and many for other countries (like the British FreeBMD Project). If all (or even if most) of our users were contributors, there is a lot RootsWeb could be doing to accelerate the rate at which public records are brought online and opened to the public. You can help us bring those records online. For details about support levels/benefits and payment options, visit <http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html> or send e-mail to <RW-info@rootsweb.com>. The regular mail address is: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, P.O. Box 6798, Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798. (Please include your e-mail address on all correspondence and checks sent to RootsWeb.)
Hello, I subscribed to this listing without really knowing anything about it, but I support anything Scottish. Can someone kind of "fill me in" on the overall goals of the listing, does it have a web page, who is the list owner, and what are the future goals? Thanks for your help John Lester
glad to hear that you were able to get help and get it removed. Hate to lose you! Pam
