    1. Sorry for the posting.
    2. Joe & Angela Rakes
    3. Greetings list members. A simple apology for the posting that went out as an urgent message from our address this past weekend about the supposed health problems of a young girl named Amanda. The posting was forwarded to our home address by a well - meaning young lady of my son's acquaintance, and he, also meaning well, forwarded it on to all of the addresses on our nicknames list. What my son did not realize is that this message is not true, from all I have been able to determine, but is a hoax like a lot of other similar messages that get forwarded around the web. For those of you who responded with compassion and offers of prayer -- thank you for being the kind souls you are. For those who responded patiently indicating that it was a hoax -- thank you for your patience in dealing with something that is "off topic" and please accept my assurance that my son won't be blindly forwarding messages in the future. Angela

    3. Seeking a source for original bound back issues of Argyll Colony +, the journal of the North Carolina Scottish Heritage Society. Specifically I need Volume 10, Nos. 1 and 3 from 1996. The March 1996 issue (Volume 10, No. 1) contains an index and chart to the Tarbert (Kilandreis) Cemetery in Kintyre which is what I am looking for. My Purcell, Torrey, McPhail, McPhaul, Gilchrist, McKay, Malloy, Graham and Smith ancestors were from this general area of the Kintyre peninsula. But I am also interested in obtaining other issues from 1995 back that may be available. Thanks for any help offered. 2. R & D Walker
    3. I'm a new subscriber and, as far as I know, the McMillon (or McMillan) Family is my only branch with Scottish roots. My great-great-grandparents were Neal McMillon and Lucinda Jane Strickland. Neal was born May 28, 1822, in NC. Neal's known siblings were: Archibald, b. 1810; Flora, b. 1821; James, b. 1826; and Nancy, b. 1829. They were in Haywood Co. (now Crockett Co.) TN by 1840, at which time the Scottish born mother, Mary, was a widow. By 1860, Neal and Lucinda Jane had settled in Greene Co., AR (northeast corner of state), and on the 1870 census, it was reported that both of Neal's parents were foreign born. I know that Cumberland Co. NC had a large number of Scottish immigrants and, in fact, there were several McMillans there in the early 1800s. Is anyone on the list researching McMillans in NC? I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks. Debra Winn Walker rdwalker@grnco.net

    2. Moore
    3. Sorry for the multiple postings...thought I would take advantage of the recent flurry of messages about North Carolina McNEILLs. In 1777, Joseph GIST presented a petition against the executors of Neill McNEILL for his wife's part in her father's estate [Cumberland Co, NC Court Records, Bk. D, p. 70]. Mrs. Dorsey [who wrote 'Christopher GIST of Maryland and Some of His Descendants'] identified Joseph GIST's wife as either Ann or Margaret McNEILL, daughter of Neill McNEILL. [Don't know how she did that.] on p. 126 of Cumberland Co NC Will Abstracts I found: "McNEILL, Neill - ( ? ) / May 1764 [I assume these dates mean that the date written is unknown, and May 1764 is the date the will was recorded?] Daughters - Catherin, MARGARET, Flora, Mary and ANN. Sons - ROGER McNeill, HENRY and Harry McNeill. 300 acres bought of Hugh Brown Exec. Torquell McNeill, Archd. McNeill, John and Malcolm McNeill. Wits. Walter Gibson, Esq., Ferquard Campbell, Esq." And from "Old Bluff Presbyterian Church History: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nccumber/bluffcreek.htm "Neill McNEILL (and his wife Catharine) by deed of February 18, 1761, conveyed to Hector McNeill and Alexander McAlister, members of the original Session and both residing on the east side of the Cape Fear River, "one acre of land whereon is built and erected a Meeting House as the same now stands" on the west side of the Cape Fear River near Tranthams Creek close to the home of ROGER McNEILL, son of Neill McNeill. Called Roger's Meeting House, this building was probably a small log structure built about 1759 and the first church building in the Upper Cape Fear Valley." Notice that both the will and the Church History mention a ROGER McNEILL, son of Neill McNEILL. I haven't found any other Rogers. [Plenty of Neills tho...] Also interesting is that Joseph GISTs brother Christopher Gist [who m. Lucy (__?__)], had a daughter Mary GIST who married HENRY McNEILL. [Could be the Henry mentioned above?] Does anyone else know this McNEILL family? This is NOT 'Black' Neill McNeill who married Grisella Campbell... 3. Hi, I am looking for info about my husband's ancestors from the Cape Fear area. His gr-grandmother was Jennette Isabella (Jennie Belle) Drake, the dau. of John Drake and Sophia Atkins , m- 1827, Cumberland Co.,moved to Haywood Co. TN. Sophia was the dau. of James Atkins and Isabella McNeill, m- 1803. I believe Ica Atkins was the father of James and need proof. Isabella McNeill was the dau. of Malcolm McNeill & Janet McAlister m- 1771. Malcolm was the son of Archibald McNeill and Jennie Bahn Smith McNeill. Janet McAlister was the dau. of Alexander McAlister Sr.( Col) and wife Flora McNeill . Flora McNeill was the dau. of Neill McNeill and Grissella Campbell. Am interested in any info about the above. Would love any of the stories that you might have about them. Cannot find the parents of John Drake. Believe he may have been from Moore county. Thank you. Lois Haile <heartbar@proaxis.com>

    3. Does anyone one the list have the Argyll Colony Plus Journal Vol. 11 No 2 and 1 ? If so would they kindly look up pages 17 and 121 and tell me what is said of Berwickshire and Berwick, pages 17 and 121 respectively. I was sent this one copy and had planned to join after we move to Germany and get settled next month. Last night while brousing through the index my eyes fell on these names from my Dad's side of the family (English). I am dying to see what the connection to Scotish ancestry is and just can't wait and order these back copies.
