    1. Re: Deportation after Culloden
    2. Wayne Bixler
    3. Hi, I think in my previous reference to a book, I didn't pick-up on what the question really was - ie; Culloden. With regard to Culloden, if deportations amounted to only 1000, that would amount to the bulk of the survivors of the original 4500 Highlanders of the battle. The English systematically used deportation or resettlement to rid themselves of problems. >From my earlier reference - "Directory of Scottish Settlers in North America, Vol. 5" Here is an excerpt - Tough, Alastair - Royalist soldier captured at Worcester. Transported to Boston on John and Sarah 13 May 1652 The English tried to remove opposition through deportation and exile. A number of my ancestors who had supported the Stuarts throughout the English Civil Wars were beheaded and their families left in exile in Northern Ireland. The majority of these families emigrated to the Colonies in the 1720s when they saw the Stuarts fail to regain the throne, and decided that their lands would never be regained. Most went first to Virgiana, and formed the militias in the frontier with the Indians and French. Many of these experienced soldiers later moved to North Carolina, whose sons and nephews formed the core of the militia. They, of course, became leaders in the Revolutionary War. Wayne A. 3. For anyone interested in this issue I would highly recommend chapter II, The Exile Theory, in Duane Meyer's excellent work, "The Highland Scots in North Carolina, 1732 - 1776". In chapter II Meyer summarizes historical scholarship on the issue of deportation after Culloden and concludes that deportation as a direct result of Culloden affected fewer than 1000 Highlanders. While there is no question, he argues, that Culloden was a turning point and cause in deteriorating social and economic conditions that provided motive to emmigrate, deportation as an act of revenge or punishment by the British seems to have been relatively slight. This book is a fine work that I would consider a must-read for anyone searching for Scots, Highland or not, in North Carolina. I have a paperback version from the University of North Carolina Press at Chapel Hill, paperback ISBN 0-8078-4199-4. Bill Gordon

    1. Shaw in Cumberland Co.
    2. Dorothy Shankle
    3. I am searching for information on Peter (and/or Patrick) Shaw who lived in Cumberland Co., NC, and died in 1807. The confusion about the given name arises because a Patrick is listed in the 1790 census (no Peter is listed) and a Peter is listed in the 1800 census (no Patrick is listed). According the NC Archives there is an inventory of Patrick Shaw’s estate in 1807 by Charles Shaw and a notice of Peter Shaw’s death in 1807 by his son, Charles Shaw. Were Patrick and Peter the same person? In 1818 there was a petition to make partition of the personal estate of Peter Shaw who died “sometime in the year 1807”. The children named in this petition were: Mary, John T., Charles, Norman, Eliza, Nancy, Catharine, Dugald, and Samuel (minor). Any additional information would be most helpful, i.e. name of parents, name of wife, etc. Thanks in advance for sharing your information

    3. I am looking for a book my dad was told has a story about several Cuthbert (sp?) brothers coming over from Scotland via England on the 5th boat to enter this country. Supposedly it tells of the brothers coming in and changing each of their names. One Cutbirth (or variation). We got this info from a Culberson who also was suppose to be one of the name changes. Our Cutbirth shows up born in Augusta Co., VA around 1738-1740. However his nephew in 1852 recalls his mother saying his grandfather had come from PA to the fork of the Yadkin. As infant his father died. We would like to trace him back to Scotland. Variations we know are Cutbirth/Cutburth/Cutberth & Cuthbert. Thanks. Christy. cwestell@flex.net

I have come across an older (1927) genealogy of his family that I am merging into my existing database. 1. I am looking for further information on his family. Does anyone have further information on his descendants? 2. I am interested in identifying who Sarah Davidson was. Her pedigree has been in some dispute. I am interested if there is any recent work that has identified her ancestry. john. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= John B. Lisle <jbl@tqsi.com> P.O. The Salisbury district was quite large, stretching all the way from the Virginia border down to the South Carolina area and including the modern counties of Guilford, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Rockingham, Rowan, Stokes and Surry. Are you *sure* they are listed in Guilford, and not just in Montgomery? >From 1749 until 1753, all of western NC was Anson County. At that point Rowan was formed from the northern portion, leaving Anson in the south. Both had an indefinite western border for some years. Then we get the following spin-offs (not all-inclusive, but I tried to mention all the ones in the Salisbury district). Rowan Guilford in 1770 (eastern Guilford came from Orange county) Rockingham formed from Guilford in 1785 Surry in 1770, subsequently splitting into Stokes, Wilkes, and the rest of the northwest corner of the state Burke in 1777, which subsequently gave rise to Buncombe and the other mountain counties to the TN border Iredell in 1788 Davidson in 1822 Davie in 1837 Anson Mecklenburg in 1762, which subsequently gave rise to Union and some other counties Montgomery in 1779 So Guilford wasn't formed directly from Anson. Guilford and Montgomery were never overlapping, or even close, but both were part of the Salisbury district in 1790. 1. Census confusion....help, please?
    2. Hello all, I have been trying to break through a very big wall in regard to my Noble family of Anson/Montgomery Co., NC in the 1770's. I came across the 1790 census form the Salisbury Dist. of Guilford County, NC and it listed my Noble family group exactly as the 1790 Montgomery Co., census has them listed. What gives???? I know that Montgomery formed from Anson County in 1779 but why would they be listed in the Guilford Co., census? It was to my understanding that the Salisbury Dist. was in Anson/Montgomery Co. How big was the Salisbury Dist. at that time? What area did it encompass, by todays geographical standards? Did Guilford County form from Anson County and that is why my Noble's showed up in both county census's? It must be the Scottish bullheadedness of my ancestors because they are not giving up their secrets easily!!!! I can hear them laughing from their graves!!! But seriously, if anyone can enlighten me, I would be soooo grateful. ;-) Thanks, Cory

    1. RE: Asnath, variety of spelling
    2. Ronald D McRaney
    3. It could be an uncommon name among the Puritans. Usually spelled Asenath. Asenath was the wife of Joseph, meaning gift of the sun god. One Aseneth had Cenith on her marriage bonds. Her grand daughter had the name Naomi Saith Jane. These three were from Iredell, Alexander Cos in NC Anyone know what the original spelling was? It seems to change with every census taker. ==== NCSCOTS Mailing List ==== If you would like to help RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative by becoming a member, sponsor, donor, or patron, please visit: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html
