Seeking info on the Spradlings of Wilkes County, NC. ca late 1700's. John Spradling married Elizabeth Chapman May 15, 1802. Chapmans and Spradlings moved on to Tennessee and then into Franklin Co., IN. John's father was, supposedly, James (Jack) Spradling. Any Spradling researchers out there? Who was his mother? Also, who were Elizabeth's parents. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Pat

There is a website that lists deportees to America after Culloden. It is entitled "Scottish Prisoners Transported to America in the Aftermath of Collonden 1747". I have had a considerable amount of difficulty in accessing it again but was finally able to do so by ending my entry at 5327. The website is: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5327/shiplists/scotimmi.html It lists the date, the passenger, remarks, the port of arrival, which for my possible ancestor was Port North Potomack MD. The information was taken from the National Genealogical Society Quarterly Vol. 64 (176). There is another website: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/5327/shiplists/sources.htm that refers to a book by Peter Wilson Coldham, "Scottish Rebels Transported to Maryland 1747." Hope this helps. I found it very helpful to look at the other passengers who were on the same ship or arrived at the same port at the same approximate time. Many were somehow tied in with the family I am researching. Pat Risner

I am about to begin writing a comprehensive family history that focuses on the PURCELL/PURSELL family that settled in Cumberland County, NC c 1770 and then moved into Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Alabama. Connected families that will be mentioned in some detail include: MALLOY, MUNN, TORREY, GILCHRIST, McPHAUL, McPHAIL, GRAHAM to name a few. This history will provide new information not available in "The Lumber River Scots", "Carolina Scots" , "Purcells of South Georgia and Other Related Families" and other publications that mention this family. It will also offer corrections to many errors and assumptions in these publications. The history will be the result of over 30 years of research. I anticipate that it will be completed by mid to late 1999. The focus will be on Malcolm (c 1748-c 1776); John (c 1750-c 1810); Neill (c 1745-after 1810), Daniel (c 1755-c 1817) and Mary PURCELL (c 1740-?) who married Alexander "Sawney" Graham. Their father was John PURCELL who died in Cumberland Co., NC before 1785. This family came to Cumberland Co., NC from the Argyll area of Scotland about 1770. If you have an interest in the PURCELL family and the listed connected families please let me know and I will keep you posted on the progress of the publication. Better yet please consider sending me information which may be included in this family history. I would appreciate receiving your e-mail address, snail mail address and phone number so that I can contact you if necessary. This is not an attempt to compile a prospect list for the publication. Rather it is an effort to compile a list of interested researchers and others who may have a direct connection with these families. Benson, you have a few areas you need to supply more information about. Beattymt@aol.com was a bit abrupt, but I am sure it was not meant to be that way. Being a teacher, I understand that you just do not know about procedures and were doing the best you could. Therefore, I am going to go through this message and try to explain the correct procedures. Your original message will have greater signs beside it. My explanations should not. Plus, I will space between the original and my explanation. The D list saves the messages up and you get a wad at a time, and sometimes it is confusing because people do not use their delete button and keep sending the same messages over and over with their replies. > >Truthfully, a message like this is not likely to get results. It needs >some first names, specific locations, and time periods. The reason she or he feels that there will not be any results is that all you have given anyone is a name. If you want the best response, you need to tell the list (subscribers, such as Beattymt and me) all the information you know. For example, do you know the McClures' first names, when and where they were born, what their parents' names were, and what the names of their children are (if they had any). Remember, all the people on this list are just like you. They are using this site as a source to get information. They are researching, too. The list is not a tool to do your research for you; it is just an aid in the event that someone else happens to be searching for the same people or family as you. Therefore, you have to tell what you know, and they can share with you what they know (if they know anything.) All of us would like to have the answers to our searches immediately, but unfortunately , some of us have been researching for years....20 or more, and still do not have all the answers. *smile* Therefore, your request for information as fast as you can get it is a bit "far out" for those of us who have been searching for years. Give them some details with which to help you in your search , such as names, places, times, etc. Then , just sit back and hope that there is someone else on this list who is researching the McClures, too, and that they will feel compelled to help a student who is needing information for his school project.<grin> Be patient. Also, subscribe to the list so that you can trade emails with people. When you are through, unsubscribe. Wayne Bixler makes the point that if 1000 highlander survivors were deported after Culloden, that number would have amounted to most of the survivors of the battle. This is interesting to know. I want to clarify, however, that the issue dealt with in "The Highland Scots of North Carolina," and the one which I intended to address by mentioning the book, was not what happened to the survivors of Culloden (although that surely is of interest) but what factors accounted for the many thousands of highlanders who emigrated. While 1000 Culloden survivors may have comprised nearly 100% of their class, they accounted for a small percentage of total highlander immigrants to North Carolina and the new world. Thus, the the direct impact of the Culloden defeat on emigration, argues author Duane Meyer, was in reality less than it was made out to be by earlier historians. Of course, we are speaking of impact here on a macro level and not at the personal and family level, as Wayne Bixler's tale of ancestral beheadings so sadly demonstrates. Bill Gordon

Is anybody else researching Archibald Currie who came from Glasgow, Scotland to Bladen County, NC in 1785? He received a land grant of 50 acres. He married Effie Philyaw; they moved to SC. Their children were John (Jack), Alexander, Martha and Mary. Thanks, Marilyn
Hi all, I'm brand new to the mailing list and hoping that someone out there can help me locate some info on my McDonald family. I have very little info but I thought maybe something would ring a bell with one of you. According to an old family letter my William McDonald was born on the water coming to America in 1786/7. His family first settled in NC. I know neither of his parents names. William was the youngest child, having at least two older sisters and one brother. Elizabeth McDonald(??born c1772 in NC, if so the family would have been to America on a trip prior to William's birth???) married Joseph Pearson and removed to Warrick Co., IN. Susan "Sukey" McDonald married a Hudson and also removed to Warrick Co. John McDonald reportedly fought at the Alamo and was killed at the same time as Crockett and Bowie. While in NC William was educated in dance, which he taught and he was reportedly a fine violinist. He removed from NC to Clermont Co., OH shortly before 1812 when he married there. There appears to be some connection between my McDonald's and a Sgt. McDonald who fought so courageously for Francis Marion that he was mentioned in the accounts of Marion's life. Sgt. McDonald's first name is never mentioned and he died in the Rev. War. He is supposed to be the son of "the Macdonald" of famous defeat at Moore's Creek Bridge, NC. Brigadier Gen. Donald McDonald led the company of loyalists in this battle. I haven't been able to find out anything about his family but it seems that after his capture and imprisonment he returned to England upon his release. If anyone can help me solve this puzzle you would have my eternal greatfulness. Thanks, Tracy MacDonald
