I'm researching the Thomas Thornton family of Duplin/Sampson County, NC. But I've come across a snag that perhaps someone here can help with. We've originally been under the assumption that there is a Thomas Thornton, Sr. and a Jr. But now I'm finding that my dates are wrong and that there is actually a Thomas III in this time frame too. Here is what I know. 1. There is an estate sale for Thomas Thornton, Sr. dated 16 July 1777 in Duplin Co., NC naming his oldest son, Thomas as administrator. 2. Thomas Thornton, Jr. purchased land on 15 March 1755. This deed was witnessed by Thomas Thornton and Nathaniel Thornton. Deed was proven by the oath of Thomas Thornton Sr. 9 Oct.1755. This shows my birthdate of Thomas Jr. of 1744 is incorrect as he couldn't have bought land at the age of 11. He also sold land on 11 August 1756. 3. Revolutionary War Records for Thomas Thornton show him born 1755 and died 1806 and the son of Thomas and Martha. This has to be Thomas Thornton, III. I'm told this Thomas married Rebecca Lee and this is confirmed when they are listed on the will of Peter Lee, Sr., dated 28 Jan 1804, probated 12 Nov 1804. Here is my problem. When a Sr. Thomas died, the son then started going by Sr. I've always showed Thomas Thornton, Jr. as the one who died in 1806 and was the son of Thomas and Martha. They all lived on the side of Duplin Co. that became Sampson Co., after 1784. I descend from John Thornton, Sr. born 31 Aug 1749 who's Bible Record and Rev. War Records confirm his date of birth and that he was the son of Thomas and Martha. If Thomas Sr. died 1777 and Thomas III died 1806, then when did Thomas II die? I show a Thomas Sr. & Jr. on a 1783 census/tax? record so I know it was after then. Thornton, John NC Duplin Co., 1783 Thornton, Nathaniel, Sr. NC Duplin Co., 1783 Thornton, Thomas, Jr. NC Duplin Co., 1783 (Thomas Thornton, III) Thornton, Thomas, Sr. NC Duplin Co., 1783 (Thomas Thornton, II) I'm not totally sure which Thomas died in 1806. Was it the II or III Thomas? Is there anyone researching the Lee family that might have more info on Thomas Thornton who married Rebecca Lee? Any insights are greatly appreciated.
