I thought I would include a few tips regarding Viruses as I too have been getting several virus e-mails. These are just general tips that are helpful. I'm also listing free on-line scan sites and free virus software download sites further below. Lately I've been getting a lot of virus e-mails that are genealogy oriented - especially for the Thornton surname which I'm researching. HELPFUL TIPS: 1. If you receive an e-mail from Microsoft or any other well-known companies, telling you to delete a file on your PC (because it's a virus file), don't. Companies like this never just tell you to "delete a file" to fix anything. They would have you go to their website and download a "fix-it" for you to run along with instructions - they would never send it in a bulk e-mail. This is called a "Hoax Virus" and it works by scaring people into deleting legitimate software files. 2. If you receive an e-mail with an attachment, DON'T OPEN THE ATTACHMENT! First, e-mail the person back and ask them what the attachment is. If they don't reply, delete the file. Even if you know the person you're getting the message from - e-mail them first! I've discovered that lately the virus infected e-mails have been using other people's addresses in an effort to fool people. I've received a couple back like I had sent them but neither my sent files folder nor my virus software show any indication that I did (all outgoing messages are scanned by my virus software). 3. There is no better remedy than having a virus software. Even if your software is old, it can still usually tell you if a file is infected, it just won't know how to clean it. I have heard that newer virus e-mails don't even require you to open the attachment because it automatically opens the attachment for you. This is what scared me into getting Norton Anti-Virus which scans all incoming and outgoing e-mail. I usually get about 2-3 virus infected e-mails per day! (I post on a lot of genealogy message boards) FREE VIRUS SOFTWARE AND ONLINE SCAN SITES: Here are a few sites that I have saved in my favorites that offer free PC Virus scans. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp http://security2.norton.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=23&pk j=UULBPJUIYCZRWEJGSSK http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/ http://www.truthorfiction.com/virus.htm http://www.freedom.net/onlineviruscheck/ http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Software/Anti_virus_freeware/ http://www.passtheshareware.com/c-virus.htm Hope this is helpful to everyone.
