Hello Donna, Dix Hill in Raleigh is the assylum people were sent to. You can visit their web page at http://www.dhhs.state.nc.us/mhddsas/DIX/ I had a couple of great aunts who were sent to this institute in the early 1900's. They lived in Sampson Co. The history of Dix Hill states that prior to the funding received by the NC Legislature in the early 1850's that the mentally ill, deaf, and blind were held in jails, poor houses or private homes.
