Fran powell@closecall.com In the North Carolina Gen. Soc. Journal, July 1976, I found what could be a genealogy nightmare. There are several pages of legal name changes from North Carolina, from 1805 to 08. I am naming just a few here. The reasons for these changes were various and included legimitization of the names of natural born children, altering the names of adopted children, or by personal desire. Original names are preceded by the word FROM and the altered name is preceded by the word TO in the notations. All names shown in double entry. Any additional information of genealogical value included in the act is added after the name change. Following each is the year of the enactment and information varies widely as to the full identification of the persons concerned and their counties of residence. Here are just a few that stand out to me, folks that I have helped with the following surnames recently... TO: DUNCAN, Jenny and David form Jenny and David CHESNUT of Samson CO. NC (1808)
