dear listers, I have made absolutely no headway in searching for family information on these two people, who were born in Sampson County, North Carolina. Snatching at straws, I will list here all the POPE names I can find in the censuses that lived in Sampson County at the time it seems likely that these two would have been born or lived at home (Mary would have been out of the home by about 1816, and Redman by 1830): Name: 1784 1790 1800 1810 1820 BLACKBURN POPE yes BLACKMON, or BLACKMAN POPE yes yes yes DANIEL POPE yes EPHRAIM POPE yes HARRIS POPE yes JACOB POPE yes yes (2) yes yes JAMES POPE YES (2) JEREMIAH POPE yes yes (2) yes yes JESSE POPE yes yes JONATHAN POPE yes yes JOHN POPE yes (2) JOSHUA POPE yes ROBERT POPE yes STEPHEN POPE yes THOMAS POPE yes yes yes yes yes THOMAS POPE JR yes WEST POPE yes yes yes (2) yes WILLIS POPE yes In 1810, Allen BARBARY, John's brother, lived very near to Johnathan POPE. In 1820, Allen lived 2 doors from Thomas POPE, and very close to Willis POPE and James POPE. In 1820, the first year John BARBARY shows up in the Sampson Co. census, he lives very near a second James POPE, but by this time he is already married to Mary POPE. Now, it seems likely, or at least hopeful, that among these families is the family of Mary POPE m. John BARBARY, and her brother Redman POPE. Redman was in the 1830 Sampson Co. census with 1 M 20/30 and 1 F 20/30 and in the 1835 Sampson Co. Tax list. Mary and Redman apparently came from "a family rich in property and slaves" according to information from a family record in my possession. This has been a total brick wall for me, and would love to have some information. Thanks, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Pat
