NC &Officers This company, known as the "Independent Blues" and as "Sampson No 1", was raised in Sampson County where it enlisted on May 10, 1861. It was mustered into state service at Fort Caswell, Brunswick County, June 18, 1861, and was assigned to this regiment as Company H. After it was mustered into the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment and its history for the war period is reported as a part of the regimental history. The information contained in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from a company muster-in roll dated July 5, 1861, and from company muster rolls for June 18-October 1861; March-October 1863; and March-December 31, 1864. No company muster-rolls were found for the period prior to June 18, 1861; for November 1861-February 1863; November 1863-February 1864; or for the period after December 31, 1864. In addition to the compamy muster rolls, Roll of Honor records, receipt rolls, hospital records, prisioner of war records, and other primary records, supplemented by state pension applications, United Daughters of the Confederacy records, and postwar rosters and histories, all provided useful information.
