    1. Johnson/Johnston in Sampson 1790

    3. I am looking for information on the Joshua Johnston who appeared in the 1790 census in Sampson County. There is a possibility that this is my line. What I know about my Joshua Johnson is this: Joshua Johnston lived in NC until at least 1802. Between 1802 and 1810 he moved to Horry County, SC, where he appears in the 1810 census. We know this Joshua had six sons--David (my ancestor, born in NC in 1802), Enoch, Jacob, Joshua, Nathan, and William--and three daughters--names not known. Joshua Sr. and his wife (name unknown) both died in Horry Co., SC, between 1810 and 1820. His son, Joshua Jr. appears in the 1820 census of Horry Co.but then he moved to Georgia in the early 1820's, as did most of the sons. Apparently, the sons all dropped the "t" from Johnston about that time. I am fairly confident, based on the little bit we know about the sex and ages of his children that this is the Joshua in the 1800 census of Duplin County, N.C. And, of the nine Joshua Johnston/Johnson families in the 1790 census of North Carolina, only two seemed to be likely candidates for our Joshua: the ones in Sampson and Edgecombe counties. I'm hoping someone on this list can help me learn more about the Sampson Co. Joshua. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dorothy (Johnson) Callaway Baxter, Iowa
