I had forgotten about dial up. You are right they are a pain. Just asking, my Mother always said to ask when I was not sure, so I do. Winnette
Winnette, The census images will remain on the site permanently, the transcriptions help those people that have dial up because the census images are so large, or if they just want to do a quick check to see if they can find a particular person without having to go through each individual image. I always go behind and double check the names to make sure they are a direct transcription or as close as possible to the original census, and I do put a disclaimer on each transcription to be creative with spellings as oftentimes the census taker would write down the way they thought the name should be spelled because most people couldn't read and write, and didn't know how to spell their own names. Also, with the transcriptions people can find who they are looking for and always save a copy of the image they are listed on for their proofs as well as using them to join any of the lineage societies. You are right, it would be easier to just upload all of the images and call it quits, but for some of the older researchers and the ones that have dial up the transcriptions are so much easier for them. : ) Diane http://www.ncgenweb.us/craven/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/dobbs/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/duplin/duplin.htm http://www.ncgenweb.us/greene/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/jones/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/lenoir/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/newhanover/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/onslow/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/pasquotank/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/pender/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/perquimans/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/sampson/ http://www.ncgenweb.us/ncmil/ -------Original Message------- From: GNW Date: 6/29/2008 5:15:52 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [NCSAMPSO] Uploading Census Diane, if you can upload the census documents, why would they need to be Transcribed? People who are searching for relatives and they don't know where they lived need the transcriptions. You are right, they may not be accurate, but it is better than nothing. Certainly if you know where your ancestor lived already, the images can be better. I've certainly spent HOURS looking through images trying to find a relative that I KNEW lived there but the ancestry transcription did incorrectly for three different censuses. (I never knew there were so many ways to interpret SINGER!) But then again on the other hand, I have a gg-grandfather who just showed up in MO in his twenties and consistently says he was born in GA, but I can't find him here there or anywhere in between. Maybe someone's transcription will someday locate this man for me. Just my thoughts! :-) Denise GNW <[email protected]> wrote: Diane, if you can upload the census documents, why would they need to be transcribed?
