Freda, Did your ggggrandfather Nathaniel Robertson/Roberson live in Sampson County, NC or in "SC". There is no Sampson County, SC now. There is no town named Sampson in SC now, but there is a community named Sampson Landing about 25 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach, SC. This mail list is mainly interested in Sampson County, NC. My ggggrandfather Nathaniel Robertson/Roberson lived in Sampson, S.C., born in ca 1765, married Amanda Blakely, born ca 1768. Nathaniel and Amanda had at least two children, William and Francis. Amanda died and Nathaniel married a second time and had more children. William is my gggrandfather and he married Elizabeth Bonner, probably in Sampson. I would like to correspond with anyone who researches these names, who has not written to me. The name Nathaniel Robertson seemed to be as common as John Smith is today! Great idea...thank you. Freda
So exciting to read all the names people are researching in Sampson, S.C. Thank you. A great idea... Is there anyway to get copies of pages of the Johnston Co Heritage Book without buying the entire book? I research Nathaniel K. Thornton and would so like to see the story. Jeane, I have the petition that started Duplin but I do not have the one that started Sampson. If you or someone else has a copy please send it to me and I will get it added to the site. If y'all will send the info I will build and add the pages to contain and house the information. We all need to pitch in and start sending stuff in to get the site growing. Winter is coming so we will all have time to contribute so start making your lists now of info to send in. Our Brick Walls has just been added to the site so send in info on yours and I will get them added as well. Happy Hunting! Will be sending mine in to you real soon. After our 2 1/2 month, 9000 mile trip east and back west again still have lots of ground to cover. We won't talk about the cost of GAS...it's something when your motel room is less than a tank of gas. Spent 4 days in Fredericksburg, Texas. in the Hill country, this was LBJ country. Pretty rolling hills, and a great golf course for Merv to play. Spent 2 weeks in Humble, TX (Houston area) at Merv's sisters home. Had the pleasure of meeting another Effingham co.GA/NC researcher who lives in Humble,Texas I met on line, and we exchanged lots of information. Then talked on the phone with James Cheshire who lives in Alabama, when we were in Mobile. He is another Hollingsworth relative. Then had the great pleasure of meeting a cousin of mine Sarah Studstill and her husband William when we spent 2 days in Valdosta, GA. Sarah and I are descendants of Jesse Carroll and Mary Rachel Gavin, their son John Carroll and Elizabeth Hollingsworth (Sarah's line) and John Carroll and Ann Hollingsworth (my line.) Sarah and I spent a long day at the Huxford Library in Homerville, "Pioneers of Wiregrass GA". We had the whole library all to ourselves for the day. Then I spent a day in the Georgia Room at the Savannah Public Library..what a great wealth of information in both. Visited my Savannah cousins..and the cemetery where my parents and grandparents are buried. My old home place..sure doesn't look as large as it did when I was little. Had a day in Effingham co.,GA at the History Center there, been 4 years since we had been there and my what a beautiful historical site. Then visited the small town (village of Egypt) where my mother was born, raised, taught school. Saw the old home and the cemetery where my family is buried. Spent a weekend in Columbia, SC with my first cousin, his father and mine were brothers. Chatting about our Swedish relatives, they had been to Sweden 6 times meeting cousins over there..I am a second generation Swede on my Dads side. Even talked to a cousin in Brakne-Hobe, Sweden. Then on to Clinton and met with Carroll researchers at the library there. Lura Southard had made arrangements for us to all use the room upstairs so we could chat and visit, but we all seemed to use the NC room instead. Lots going on that day. My cousin, Jackie Dotson who lives in NC, met us there. She and I are Fryar descendants. Merv and I visited with Margaret and Clay Scott in Warsaw, Clay and I are Hollingsworth descendants. Then 2 weeks with my brother and his wife in Alexandria, VA and then 4 days in Lancaster co.,PA. Amish country. We walked cemeteries in Coshoctin and Killbuck, Ohio looking for Merv's G.G.Grandparents graves. Had the opportunity to meet a cousin of Merv's, Larry Purdy who lives in Glenmont, Ohio. His ancestor and Merv's G.G.Grandfather were brothers. I also met him on the net. Finished our trip with a week with our son and his wife in Boise, Idaho. Beautiful country. Then home to Shingle Springs, Ca. Nice to be home..but always ready for another trip. Hope I didn't miss anything. Lots of memories. Just thought I'd share a little of our wonderful trip with you all.
