Diane NCGenWeb CC NCGenWeb Special Projects -------Original Message------- From: [email protected] Date: 12/18/2008 11:12:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Historic US Highway 17-1 Diane, You may have gotten this request from other highway buffs—but do you have any historic photos showing the sign for US 17-1? This road appeared on maps in the late twenties or so, but there is some suggestion that signs were never posted. Much of its route is now North Carolina 11. Any scene in which the sign is visible will suffice. US 17-1 is unique in that it may have been the only hyphenated route designation in the US Highway system (trust me, that sort of thing is important to highway buffs). There are a few hyphenated signs around the country where two routes share the same pavement—for example, US 1-9 in New Jersey---but 17-1 is thought to be the only one where the route number itself was hyphenat Ed. 1. [SAMPSON] Carroll Cemetery
    2. Morning Diane, hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving. I was looking at the Cemetery page this morning and see that the Carroll Cemetery on Brown Town Rd. was done last month. >From the transcriber, there is one stone that was broken and had the date 20 Mar. 1885 . The date is actually 23 Mar. 1885 from the family bible. That is the marker for John Durham Carroll born 3 Jan. 1809 died 23 Mar. 1885.. He was the husband of Zilphia Chesnutt Carroll. Also my G.G.Grandfather. I have a photo of the cemetery and will send it to you. One of our trips back there they only had a low crop planted and not corn and Merv was able to get in and take a picture... Jackie in CA.

    3. This was very interesting history. I remember taking the oath when I was commissioned as a Naval officer in 1976. It was pretty much the same thing from way back. The other forms of the oaths for public office appear to be variations. -------------- Original message from "GNW" <[email protected]>: -------------- > 1777 Duplin County Oath of Allegiance and Abjuration-a testimony of > support and faithfulness to the State of North Carolina and a renouncement > of the authority of Great Britain, was signed by twenty-five of Duplin's > early leaders. > > Some data is on this site. > > http://www.history.army.mil/faq/oaths.htm > > > ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in > the subject and the body of the message

    1. Re: [SAMPSON] Sampson Co Site Online Deeds
    2. B L Wiggins
    3. Thanks, Donna. I am so excited about the database I am having a hard time working today. I want to get in there. The 1888 deed that I found right away was Bk 83/page 168, which is where our Benjamin Jeams Wiggins sold his portion of land to Thomas I. Sutton. The deed says "land of my Father Jack Wiggins" and describes the Wiggins land on Goshen Run. It validates BJ's father and it validates the location of the property and the old Wiggins graveyard which is almost lost to Goshen Swamp. Does anyone know who Thomas I. Sutton was? I have a copy of a division of land for Ira Sutton dated about 1944. It was given to my cousins Lois and Susan when they visited the property some years ago. The lady in the house didn't know anything about the land but was able to dig out this division of property. It shows Ira Sutton's children receiving parts as follows: Mrs. Mittie Pate, 38 acres (Mittie Leon Sutton) (I think this is the Wiggins land) Mrs. W. A. Wheeler, 84 acres (don't know who this is; it might be Willie Ann Sutton) L. H. Sutton, 30 acres (Lawrence Haden Sutton) M. E. Sutton, 40 acres (Major Edward Sutton) N. B. Sutton, 27.5 acres (Nathan Benjamin Sutton) One more piece to the puzzle would be to connect Ira Sutton back to Thomas I. Sutton. (My, we genealogists do struggle for the smallest pieces of information that will tell us the story of our ancestors.) 2. Sampson Co has put the old deeds records on line now, the index is not all there. I did a search on McLam, Mclamb, MacLam, but only came up with one deed. But, while searching I have found a least 6 more in the 1 and 2 books. So check for page by page for more records. Donna
