Diane, Edward Charles Gavin, was my 3rd. Great Grand Uncle. I will be happy to share what info I have on him and the family. jackie ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike & Diane To: Sampson County Cc: Ed Gavin Sent: Tue, 12 May 2009 00:01:34 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [SAMPSON] Cedar Hill Hi all, Can anyone help a fellow researcher. Here is the info: I had a distant cousin, Edward Charles Gavin, who several terms in the North Carolina Senate from about 1823 forward and one session in the House from Sampson County in the 1840s. He died in 1850. He owned a plantation named Cedar Hill south of Turkey. Do you know of any Gavin's in that area I could contact. Diane, Gavins run in my family, also. My ancestor Lewis R. Gavin was the brother of Edward Charles Gavin. I show Edward Charles Gavin as buried at "Cedar Hill, Turkey, NC." I don't know exactly where Cedar Hill is or who living relatives may be, but the following may help: One of the notes in my file came from the Smithfield website below which describes land patented by EC Gavin's great grandfather Charles Gavin. http://www.downtownsmithfield.com/earlyhistory.html Smithfield's Colonial Beginnings: 1759-1779: In 1743 a South Carolina native named Charles Gavin obtained a patent for 600 acres lying on both sides of the Neuse River. The meandering Neuse flowed from north to south as it cut through this particular acreage. On the eastern side of the stream the Gavin grant apparently began at a red oak "near a branch and near the river." Researcher James P. Smith concluded that this oak tree stood in the southwest corner of what is now Smithfield's Riverside Cemetery. ALSO: http://www.martygrant.com/gen/roberts/roberts-john-e-craven.htm On 22 Nov 1738 John Roberts received a land patent for 150 acres on the South side of the Neuse River in Craven Co, NC on Charles Gavan's corner. (Craven Co, NC Deed Book 1 page 175). Charles Gavin, whose land bordered John E. Roberts in 1738, sold land in Duplin Co, NC in 1753 and that deed was witnessed by Joseph Roberts. ALSO: http://files.usgwarchives.net/nc/wayne/heritage/turkey2.txt HISTORY OF TURKEY POST OFFICE On August 10, 1889, the Turkey Post Office was opened for the first time with Mr. Ed MANN as the first postmaster. The post office was located in his store which stood on the north side of the railroad in front of his home which is now the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert BUTLER. The house and store later belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Sam SUTTON, and the store was burned in March 1917. Mr. MANN was also stationmaster at Turkey and the depot stood next door to his store. The railroad was completed in 1887, was built on the bed of the old plank road and was a spur of the Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. Mr. MANN was from Wilmington and his wife was prior to her marriage Miss Eugenia PIGFORD. Through her grandfather, Edward Charles GAVIN, she inherited the plantation south of Turkey known as "Cedar Hill." (NOTE: Eugenia Pigford married Edward Mann about 1873 in New Hanover Co, NC. They had children: Thomas M., Charles L., Eugene, Katie, Anniebell, and Ethel. In the 1880 census, Eugenia Mann was living with her mother Matilda Gavin Pigford and her brother James B. Pigford. In the 1930 census, widow Eugenia Mann was living in Wilmington, NC.) I was going to try to pair the wills on file and in the book of abstracts to go with each of the Hardy's below. However the dates seem to fit for only one. The other wills seem to be earlier. I think the will of a John Royal does seem to fit the for "Hardy S." I'm just going to list the wills which contain a son named Hardy. I suspect that middle name "Elverton" would make lineage a little easier to tract. However it appears that the will of Hardy E. (son of Hardy, Sr.) who died in 1849 had no children. There is another generation after most of these before the war, so the number of Hardys was probably multiplied. Hope these are helpful. Lura >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ............ I think these are different men. The surname of Hardy had been in the maternal lines of this family at least twice. There are at least four Royal/Ryal wills in the Sampson County Will Abstracts which list a son as Hardy Royal. I'm sure there were others who did not have a will who also named a son Hardy. This given name of Hardy carried over even in the families established by the female members of the Royal family. My ggggrandmother Lucy Royal, daughter of William, married Alexander Carrell. They named a son Major Hardy Carrell. The given name of Hardy has contiued to be used in that family for many generations. Based on the age differences I would say they are 2 different people. Service Record:Enlisted as a Private on 5 March 1862 at the age of 16. Service Record:Enlisted as a Private on 20 April 1861 at the age of 24. Maybe they are cousins? No way to tell where they are buried unless you have narrowed it down from census records on where they lived. If they died during the Civil War they would be buried very close to where they died. According to his death certificate, John A. Royal, Sr 1844- 1921 was buried in Mt. Olive, Sampson Co. NC. However, it did not give the name of the cemetery. If someone could look him up in cemetery records, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks, Winn
Gary, I'm not sure if this is the marker you're speaking of, but there are several Coopers buried in Roseboro's Old Hollywood Cemetery, including Dr. Fleet John Cooper (6/21/1860 - 7/11/1907) and his wife Sallie (1868 - 1939). Apparently Sallie was married twice more -- to Charles Butler and John C. Taylor -- after Fleet's death. Fleet Cooper (1881 - 1936) and Katie Cooper (1889 - 1962) are buried in a Howard Cemetery 1.2 miles from Salemburg. There are several more Coopers buried in the Salemburg Cemetery and smaller ones in that area -- too numerous to list. Hope this helps. The cemeteries in Roseboro and Salemburg are big ones and well maintained. I've heard or read that Fleet Cooper, Sr's & Jr's graves were 'lost' in a field somewhere near the original home site, and that is why the family erected the granite marker to their memory that is located across from Fleet Cooper Road on the Salemburg and Roseboro Highway outside of Clinton. When I was near there on business in 2003, I had an opportunity to visit the site, and the Rowan (formerly Cohaire) Baptist Church, where the Coopers were active as far back as the late 1700s. Greetings, I am Jackie Powell, in Salida, Colorado. My grandfather was a BELOTE. I am seeking information about an EDMUND BELOTE who joined the 10th Infantry at the end of the War of 1812. His enlistment papers say he was born in Sampson County., and he joined at Sampson Courthouse or Fayetteville. I had been under the impression he was born in Bertie County, because his wife stated that in the 1850s. I have reached a dead end with Edmund, and want any information you can give me. The line I have is Edmund Belote b. 1792 +/-, who after 1819 (he enlisted for 5 yrs.) lived in Tennessee four years, married Elizabeth Weaver in north Georgia in 1822, where he lived for about 30 years. He died in Arkansas in 1857. His son John Belote b. 1829 Georgia. He and his wife Lavinia (Viny) Rice went to Faulkner County, Arkansas around 1850. He and his third wife, Mary E., had a son, John Thomas Belote, b. 1878 d. 1945 Faulkner County, Arkansas, who married Zemalou Johnson. Their son, William Thomas Belote, b. 1902 Faulkner County, Arkansas, d. 1987 Beaumont, Texas. I will appreciate any help you can give. Jackie Powell [email protected]
