My husband's earliest-known Moore ancestor was John J. Moore, b. 1796 in NC. We believe he lived in Sampson Co., NC, before moving through Georgia territory to settle in Conecuh Co., AL by 1820's. He married a girl whose first name was Susan. Can anyone help with his possible parents? Or siblings? Or anything about his history? Thanks, Linda Pierce Moore [email protected]
PLEASE FORGIVE ME! I meant to be writing a personal letter to Phyllis Kelly, and I just didn't notice that it was addressed to the Sampson County mail list. I guess many folks doing genealogy are faced with decisions of body parts that wear out and homes that become too much work for an older lady to care for alone. Again, I apologize for going off the subject of genealogy. Thanks. I set the replay to DVR at 12 am EDT. There are several dna databases out there. I took results from familytreedna and plugged them into ancestry. I recently learned about genebase and I have also transferred the results there. Does anyone know of other large testing companies? FTDNA gives you ysearch.org to compare across various companies, but you only see matches if people have registered with that site (ysearch). Micki, if this reaches you, please contact me regarding some information you sent me back in January 2000, about Samuel WEST and his Revolutionary War service. The old email address of 2000 does not "work" anymore, but I see your columns in HUCKLEBERRY so know you are still around------ Thank you for your time. If you go to search and type in Herbert James Gavin, there is a very nice article on his life and his military career, more than was in the Sacramento Bee Obituary. Also he was born in Winterset, Ohio. Jackie Purdy
The following is an obituary in the Sacramento Bee Newspaper, Sacramento, CA. July 1, 2009. I know there are Gavin folks in both Duplin and Sampson counties, NC and thought some of you would like to see this. There were 2 articles in the paper about his passing..and I am sure if you would like more information you can check the papers web site and read more. Both articles had his picture. He was the General at McClellan when my husband retired back to Sacramento in 1972. At that time I hadn't gotten into genealogy that much and didn't connect the Gavin name to our Gavins in North Carolina. Jackie Purdy, Shingle Springs, Ca. GAVIN: Herbert James Major General USAF (Ret) Born November 15, 1921, left us Saturday morning. A veteran of WWII and Vietnam. Retired from active duty May 1978 at McClellan AFB as Commander of USAF Logistics Command. Recipient of the silver star, bronze star, distinguished flying cross and serveral air medals. Faithful husband of Doris Mae Gavin until her untimely death in 1983. Raised five children. A man of rock hard conviction and extra large compassion. Passionate about life, family and country. Served patriotically with honor. Internment private at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
Lura, It seems Rootsweb holds emails from a variety of lists before it will send a bunch out in bulk. I have received emails from July 4th all night tonight on various lists. They say it cuts down on the amount of traffic on their mailing lists, but I think it doubles or triples the volume because people, myself included, tend to send them once or twice more after the initial one didn't go through. Lets just hope they change their practices soon. If it does continue we can always open a yahoo mailing list in addition to this one like we have for Duplin. Those always go through immediately. Lura, Your first one didn't come thru but this one did. I have noticed that Rootsweb is holding onto some emails and sending them out in batches whether it is the same day it is sent or hours or days later. They are getting pretty bad about it. Yes, I am human, just a lot of burning of the midnight oil to keep up with the sites and unpacking during the day along with playing with the kids and any spare time I am right back here in the "office" posting new info and replying to everyone. I am not that organized, I just made sure that what we packed and moved from room in the old house went into the same room in the new one so it did make it a little easier that way. I still have a lot of boxes to go thru and unpack but for the most part everything is done, just a little rearranging and going thru the boxes of non-essentials and I will be finished. I am totally addicted to genealogy, I guess you could call it my "crack" or drug of choice. : ) I will be taking a week or two off within the next month or so to catch up some other things around here and we are going to try and go on a vacation. We have been talking about going to Gettysburg and some other Civil War Battlefields, so I can combine a vacation as well as getting new info and materials for the sites. Well, going to reply/post a few more emails and then I am off to bed. Thanks to you and everyone else for hanging in there with me thru this move and everything else that has been going on! Diane: Really, I cannot see the value in transcribing when they can be scanned and indexed. Transcriptions are so prone to error. But still I would be happy to help.
