Gary, Many NC Baptist Churches have had their records microfilmed and stored in the North Carolina Historical Collection housed at Wake Forest University Library in Winston-Salem, NC. It is possible that some of these very early church records would be there. See the link below for more information: http://www.wfu.edu/Library/baptist/ I have read that the library at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA houses Baptist and Presbyterian historical records. For more information concerning this, see the link below: http://lcweb.loc.gov/rr/main/religion/uts.html I have not done research at either of these places and just pass this information along with the hope it might be helpful. I am desperately trying to locate any and all information on: Drusellah (Drewsiller, Drucilla, Drewzilla) STEPHENS originally from Sampson County, NC. Her birth is recorded in the STEPHENS/THAMES Family Bible record in the 1790s. Her given name is shown spelled in all the different ways I show above. Her married name is recorded as COOPER in her father's, John STEPHENS' will. Circumstantial evidence indicates she may have been the spouse of my g-g-g-grandfather Jonathan COOPER, son of Cap't. John COOPER and grandson of Fleet COOPER, Sr., all of Sampson County, NC. Apparently, she gave birth to my g-g-grandfather William Stephens COOPER in 1810, as his birth is recorded in the STEPHENS/THAMES Family Bible record. Her sister Zilpha also married a COOPER (Daniel) son of Fleet COOPER, Jr., but they had no sons named William S. I cannot find any record of her or Jonathan's marriage, and suspect that one of the several ministers in the immediate and extended family (Rev. Fleet COOPER, Jr., Rev. William COOPER, etc.) may have performed the ceremony without it being officially recorded anywhere. Thanks for anything. Regards, Gary W. COOPER

I did Duplin County out of respect for it being the parent county of Sampson County. I copied the articles as they appeared. There is no abstraction here. There are a few occasions where something was wrong with the paper and a word might not be legible or the paper is too wrinkled to read. I feel like there is too much quality of information in these articles to be abstracted and abstracting them takes the meaning away as they were intended by the various author's who wrote them. I have a grandmother in the 1870 Census, Jane Tanner age 50 that goes to live with Theophilis Sepoms??????? age 39 and Nancy age 36, after her husband William Tanner dies in Civil War in 1861. I'm hoping this is her baby brother, in which case knowing what the surname is would be helpful. There is some sort of connection. No listing of a daughter named Nancy in previous Censuses. I have looked in Surname lists and can't find this name or anything close. Tried searching different spellings and they all come back 0 hits. I've looked around in the Censuses and I can't find the name written any clearer. Whatever the name is there is several in the censuses. Got any Ideas or know what this name is? Thanks!!!!! Sandi
Listmembers, If you have used the services of a professional researcher who regularly works at the State Archives in Raleigh, will you please contact me privately and tell me of the experience? Listmembers, I am interested in learning more about some of the STEVENS families of early Bladen and Duplin; and possibly Sampson Counties; from creation of each county to about 1850/60. Specifically, Abram STEVENS was in Bladen 1790's; John STEVENS was in Duplin 1777; Abner STEVENS was in Duplin 1774; Richard STEVENS was in Duplin by/before 1777. As always I am looking for a connection to any WEST families of the area/time period. Who were the wives of these men? Who did their children marry? If they left NC where did they go? Thanks for any help/clues/sources. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net
Are copies of the Sampson County Heritage Book available? If so, can someone direct me to the contact individual/organization? Patsy

Hello Everyone, I am Sandi Tanner and I have been researching my husbands Tree. I am trying to gather some history on his family for his Birthday in Aug. I am sure this is going to be an endless project. Which am loving. I only have 3 Surnames so far in Sampson County, Little Cohaire, Roseboro area. TANNER, LUCAS and FAIRCLOTH. I'd love to exchange information with anyone researching or coming across these Surnames in this area. I think the William Tanner b. abt. 1800 came in from Asheville, NC because there is a newspaper article printed there about William Tanner from Sampson County who was killed when his house was struck by lighting. Aug 1845. He isn't in the 1850 Census and wife is living with her father. I am in the process of trying to get this article because it might have more information. But it does make you wonder why it was important half way across the state. I have a home page through family tree maker where there is a family tree: Ancestors of Jerry Scott Tanner. I look forward to exchanging information!!!!!!! Addicted to Research! Sandi
The annual Capps reunion will be held this Sunday right after the church services at Jordan Chapel Church in Mt.Olive, N.C. Please bring a covered dish to share. Pam
