Ben, I have found the following sources you may want to follow up on. Fleet Cooper, Jr. Obit This was included in several postings on the Cooper Forum by Martha D. Schell; all made 4/15/2001. To see more, go to the forum and do a search on schell. Religious Herald, February 22, 1828, pg 27. "Died, in Sampson county, NC, after a few days' illness, the Rev. Fleet Cooper, in the seventy-ninth year of his age. The deceased had been an advocate for the doctrines of the cross in the Baptist church for fifty years, left behind him an unblemished reputation, and died in the full assurance of a glorious immortality. Fleet Cooper, Sr. Rev War Info According to Revolutionary War Records of Duplin-Sampson Counties by Virginia and Oscar Bizzell, Fleet, Sr. served as Material Aid - Patriot Services during Revolutionary War. You should check this source for info on Fleet, Jr.s participation. I think he probably did since both his older brother, John, and younger brother, William, are cited in this source as having served. Listmembers, in Sampson Co., NC, 1832, Elias GAINEY/GANEY gave his power of attorney to Willis WEST. The power of attorney was given to Willis so that Willis could sue or collect debts owed to Elias by Reddy GAINEY/GANEY and other heirs of Abraham GAINEY. I am hoping a GAINEY researcher will be able to provide further information on the family relationships cited above as well as the debts owed to Elias. How was Abraham GAINEY related to Elias? Any information appreciated. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net
I thought I would include a few tips regarding Viruses as I too have been getting several virus e-mails. These are just general tips that are helpful. I'm also listing free on-line scan sites and free virus software download sites further below. Lately I've been getting a lot of virus e-mails that are genealogy oriented - especially for the Thornton surname which I'm researching. HELPFUL TIPS: 1. If you receive an e-mail from Microsoft or any other well-known companies, telling you to delete a file on your PC (because it's a virus file), don't. Companies like this never just tell you to "delete a file" to fix anything. They would have you go to their website and download a "fix-it" for you to run along with instructions - they would never send it in a bulk e-mail. This is called a "Hoax Virus" and it works by scaring people into deleting legitimate software files. 2. If you receive an e-mail with an attachment, DON'T OPEN THE ATTACHMENT! First, e-mail the person back and ask them what the attachment is. If they don't reply, delete the file. Even if you know the person you're getting the message from - e-mail them first! I've discovered that lately the virus infected e-mails have been using other people's addresses in an effort to fool people. I've received a couple back like I had sent them but neither my sent files folder nor my virus software show any indication that I did (all outgoing messages are scanned by my virus software). 3. There is no better remedy than having a virus software. Even if your software is old, it can still usually tell you if a file is infected, it just won't know how to clean it. I have heard that newer virus e-mails don't even require you to open the attachment because it automatically opens the attachment for you. This is what scared me into getting Norton Anti-Virus which scans all incoming and outgoing e-mail. I usually get about 2-3 virus infected e-mails per day! (I post on a lot of genealogy message boards) FREE VIRUS SOFTWARE AND ONLINE SCAN SITES: Here are a few sites that I have saved in my favorites that offer free PC Virus scans. http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_pcc.asp http://security2.norton.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=us&venid=sym&plfid=23&pk j=UULBPJUIYCZRWEJGSSK http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/ http://www.truthorfiction.com/virus.htm http://www.freedom.net/onlineviruscheck/ http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Software/Anti_virus_freeware/ http://www.passtheshareware.com/c-virus.htm Hope this is helpful to everyone. Rufus R. Monk, Esq., and Barbara McCaleb were married on 2 May 1861 in Wilmington, NC. According to newspaper article Barbara was the daughter of the late Archibald B. McCaleb. Archibald McCaleb married on 28 Dec 1841 at Limestone in Duplin Co, NC. Archibald was a merchant of Wilmington, NC. Mary Susan Davis was the daughter of Thomas Davis and Barbary Armstrong of Duplin Co, NC. Rufus was the son of Archibald Monk and Harriet Hargrove of Sampson County. The will of B R Monk dated 26 Dec 1878 and probated in Sampson County 26 Feb 1879 mentions a daughter Mary Monk - leaves land , bureau; eds & furn. that belonged to her Ma; livestock; should Mary die without heirs, prop. to Catholic Church. Rufus Monk and Barbara McCaleb are buried at the Catholic Cemetery in Newton Grove. Seek name of Church and or Cemetery. A daughter Mary Frances Monk (1870-1939) married Marshall Flowers Troublefield (1864-1937). They died in Faison, Piney Grove Twp. I am searching for anyone that can add to this information. Seek location and name of family cemetery where they are buried. Supposedly one son of this marriage. What was the name of the son and are there any other descendants? Thanks in advance, Steve Pearsall
Hello Jerome Tew, I have noticed that you have some info on the Gainey line in Sampson Co., I'm looking for Edna Gainey. I know that one married Moses Westbrook and they moved to Al.,I think. There was another one that was younger. Bartholomew Gainey was the father of the Edney that married Moses Westbrook. In Bartholomew's Will he list Edney Westbrook and son-in-law Moses Westbrook. Also a Polly Thornton as a Dau-in-law. grandchildren one as Edney Lee. Do you know who these two ladies were married to and who their parents were? On Edmund Ganey Will dated 11 Mar. 1791 prob. 10 May 1791 he list sis- Edney Ganey ( who md. Westbrook) and a Samuel Buckhanan who a debt to, a debt to Jean Hill. Witness by Bennett and Francis Hill. I sure they all connect to my husband's line, although I can't find much info on them. His line has Westbrook, Hudson, Thornton and Hill. The farthest I have got back is John Hill born 1790-94 married Edney ( unknown) born 1800 married ca. 1815-20. The name Buckhanan is passed now in three geraration as first name, which leds me to think maybe Edney's last name was Buckhanan. There was a Jean that was married to a John Hill who died around 1790 or so, there in Sampson Co., Not sure who this John Hill was. Do you have any info on Buckhanan families and Gainey that might connect to a Hill line? I know I'm running wild with this but thought I would throw all my ideas out to see if it ran a bell or you could let me to a book to check or if you know of someone tracing this line. Thank you so much for all that you are doing on the sites. Donna
Steve, It seems to me that the power of Attorney would have to have been registered in the county of the deceased. Have you looked to see if J. W. Eagor was possibly the Register of Deeds of Sampson County, NC on March 6, 1862? Maybe someone could look for you at the registration books for Book No 35, Page 342-3(illegible). I'm glad you are doing research into a branch of the CARROLL family! There are several of us who descend from a CARROL/CARROLL/CARREL/CARRELL who at one time lived in the area of Six Runs Creek in Duplin/Sampson County. If we could map this entire family someday, maybe some of us could find answers to our individual brick walls. Personally, I believe that one CARROLL family came quite early and then other relatives drifted in to join them in the production of turpentine, pitch, and pine tar, but so far I have not been able to either prove or disprove that theory. Some day I hope to study the history of the area more thoroughly and see if I can determine why so many CARROLLs settled there together, and then many of them seemed to move together southward as new Indian lands opened up. I believe they followed the availability of virgin long leaf pine trees. My Alexander Carrell (married Lucy Ryal in 1783, Sampson County) bought and sold several tracts of land. I think he sapped the resin from the pine trees for about 5 years and then sold the land to a farmer. It's just a theory. Anybody know anything that would help me prove or disprove it? I am on a quest for any written material left behind by several notable Baptist ministers of North Carolina, hoping to find therein some record of my families marriages that I can't find anywhere else. The odd thing is that these minister's families were all related in some way, many by marriage. The minsters in question are: Rev. Edward Brown(e) - associated with Coharie Rowan Baptist, and Brown's Chapel Rev. Fleet Cooper, Jr. - pastored Coharie Rowan for 50 years Rev. William Cooper - pastored Cape Fear Baptist Rev. William Thames - pastored Cape Fear Baptist Rev. Brown was grandfather to two Stevens/Stephens girls who married Cooper men, Zilpha and Drusilla. Rev. Fleet Cooper, Jr's. son Daniel was married to Zilpha Stevens/Stephens There is a strong possibility that Druslla Stevens/Stephens was married to Jonathan Cooper Rev. Fleet Cooper, Jr's nephew. Rev. William Cooper was an uncle to Daniel and Jonathan. Just hoping that somewhere some church record or family Bible will positively prove who Drusilla's husband was. They would have married circa 1807-1810. There is no public record of her marriage. Best Regards, Gary garluke@juno.com Gary W. & Christie J. Cooper 653 Lover's Lane Road Dawson, GA 31742
