Duplin Co. Court Minutes 1817 Whereas Hester WEST has been delivered of a bastard child and hath refused to declare who is the father thereof, Augustin JONES came before the Court in behalf of said Hester WEST and gave his bond to indemnify the Parish of St. Gabriel from maintenance of said bastard child. Listmembers, I am looking for any information on Hester WEST. Who were her parents? When was she born? What was her child's name? Any information appreciated. Thanks. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net

1)In the will of James JAMES, written 1790, proved 1796, he mentions a daughter Elizabeth. 2)The will of Joseph JAMES, written 1781, proved early 1782, mentions wife Elizabeth and leaves son Elias one shilling sterling. Son Charles is executor and chief beneficiary. 3) The lands of Thomas JAMES were divided 1809 among a Grizzy JAMES, a Tempor-- JAMES and an Eliza JAMES. I am trying to isolate the Eliza JAMES who was was shown as head of household, living next door to Samuel WEST, in Duplin Co. 1800. This Eliza was alive in Duplin 1817. She had a daughter Celia ROGERS and a daughter named Temporance. Can anyone help sort out these Eliza JAMES women? Thanks for any help. fran fpowellsr@starpower.net

I been told that Funifold was the son of William and Mary brother of Francis who is buried at the church along with Nancy Francis dau. My problem with that is Funifold was born in 1845 and i the 1850 he was not living with William. William was a older man by then. He was probably born out of wedlock. Although I guess he could be his out of wedlock. Need to check the 1840-50 court records for Sampson Co., to check all the records on Raynors. Hope this has clear some up for you on the David's line. Listmembers, Thomas SUTTON was in Sampson Co., 1791, maybe earlier. Thomas was a slave-holder and that causes me to wonder where he lived and how much land he owned. I would like to contact researchers who know where Thomas' land lay and the given and maiden names of his wife. Thanks for any help/information. fran fpowellsr@starpower.net
I apologize for having so much trouble getting maps to you folks. Some got them, some didn't, some said the map was HUGE. If anyone would like a copy by mail, send me a SASE to Susan Blevins 19 Forest Knoll Drive Weaverville, NC 28787 That may be much simpler. It is a one page map.
Listmembers, I would like to contact researchers with knowledge of William MAGEE and Edmund MATHIS who were in Duplin Co. by or before 1776. (1) Who were the spouses of both these men? (2) On 26 January 1778, a Lucretia WEST witnessed a deed from William to Edmund. What was the connection of Lucretia to these men? Any information appreciated. Fran fpowellsr@starpower.net

I very much want to thank the person who responded to my inquiry about the Great Coharie Swamp with a map of Sampson County. The map was so large that it took up so much space on my email program that I could do nothing else but put the map on the hard disk and delete the message. Therefore, I do not know who to thank, but am very grateful. Pat
One other piece of information that might help is that the Barbarys had much property abutting the Great Coharie Swamp. Can anyone tell me where that is located? Thanks, Pat
Mary POPE, who married John BARBARY (b. ca 1780 in Duplin Co, NC) ca 1816 in Sampson County North Carolina was also born in Sampson County and is my gggrandmother. The only information I have that gives me any hope of finding these POPEs is that she had a brother, Redman POPE, who appears on the 1835 tax list in the Honeycutt District of Sampson Co, NC. I have found him in no other records. John and Mary BARBARY's first two children, Serena and Redman BARBARY, were born in Sampson Co, NC and the remainder of their children were apparently born in Washington County, Virginia. My great grandfather, Thomas BARBARY (who spelled his name BARBRE as an adult) was Mary's last child and she died within a year of his birth. Their other children were Alpha, Caltha and Absobeth. I have extensive information on Redman BARBARY and Thomas BARBARY (BARBRE). Mary POPE was reputed to be from a family "rich in property and slaves." John was married ca 1800 to UNKNOWN, and they had six children: Margaret, Quimby, Smittick, Allen, Kitsy and Emily, all born in Sampson County, NC. I have a lot of information on the first four, but none on Kitsy and Emily. This is really my BRICK WALL and I would love to see it come crashing down! Help! Pat Alexander
