1. Taylor M. "Bunk" Edge
2. sromanek
3. I thought I would let you all know that I finally have been able to confirm that who we find as Taylor Edge in the house of David S. Edge in the 1880 census IS actually who my mother always knew as "Bunk" Edge. She knew he was the brother to her grandpa who was Leonard Ray"Lenwood" "Len" Edge, but she did not know what his real name was for sure. I recently started digging some more on this trying to prove it one way or another. A good friend went to Bunk's gravesite and took down several names and dates for me, but that did not help any other than give me dates. It did not prove who he was the son of. Low and behold this past Sunday the answer dropped in that good friend's lap. A great granddaughter of Bunk contacted that good friend saying she had some Edge information she wanted to share. I still am not sure why she contacted him. It seems she thought he might be able to help her find out more about her family. Anyway, now it is for sure that Taylor and "Bunk" are one and the same. Below is the 1880 census for him with his father and mother Margaret New Edge. Then also I will send the census from that point on. I am transcribing it from the great granddaughter's notes as well as my own that I found in census. You will see how in one census he is Taylor, and in another he is Bunk. He also traveled between Bladen & Sampson Counties. At least one more mystery is solved now. Hope this helps you all. 3. Listmembers, in case this is of interest to anyone I send the following info received from another rootsweb list. I have no further information on this subject. Fran powell@closecall.com In the North Carolina Gen. Soc. Journal, July 1976, I found what could be a genealogy nightmare. There are several pages of legal name changes from North Carolina, from 1805 to 08. I am naming just a few here. The reasons for these changes were various and included legimitization of the names of natural born children, altering the names of adopted children, or by personal desire. Original names are preceded by the word FROM and the altered name is preceded by the word TO in the notations. All names shown in double entry. Any additional information of genealogical value included in the act is added after the name change. Following each is the year of the enactment and information varies widely as to the full identification of the persons concerned and their counties of residence. Here are just a few that stand out to me, folks that I have helped with the following surnames recently... TO: DUNCAN, Jenny and David form Jenny and David CHESNUT of Samson CO. NC (1808)

1. Re: Genealogical DNA Testing...why???
2. Hi all, I agree. Our BLANTONS are doing DNA testing now and are getting good results. Anyone wanting to look at these results go to Blanton Family Historians and follow the links to the DNA project. I am still looking for the first name of a JAMES woman who married Enoch BLANTON about 1830; either in Sampson or Duplin Co NC. 1. Genealogical DNA Testing...why???
2. Gary W Cooper
3. In response to anyone questioning why use DNA testing and what are the benefits, I can only share my own experience: For thirty years I had tried to verify whether or not my COOPER line was related to the Fleet COOPER, Sr. line of Sampson County, NC. All I had to go on was family legend that my forefathers migrated to Georgia from North Carolina, and that the name of one of my dad's great uncles was named "Fleet". We had very little paper-trail, and a lot of oral history. No one alive when I started the research had ever even heard of another Fleet COOPER besides Dad's old uncle, and none knew where in NC our line was supposed to have come from. Hiram "Ben" COOPER (COOPER DNA Group Administrator) and I had corresponded over the past few years, and he had helped me a lot with some potential leads, as his paper-trail back to Fleet COOPER, Sr. was very detailed and verifiable. Even before Ben accepted the Group Administrator responsibilities, he and I became two of the initial participants, later Ben's brother, joined the group as an additional "proof test" of our results. Ben and I matched 24 of 25 "markers", and his brother and I matched all 25 markers. These results tell us that we have 99.9% probability that we share a common ancestor. In our case that is Fleet COOPER, Sr. born in the 1720s. To me DNA testing has been invaluable in assuring me I am researching the correct line, and in giving me the benefit of Ben's vast amount of prior research. In turn, I have been able to give Ben information which can extend his family tree by all the folks in my line that descended from my branch of Fleet, Sr.'s descendants. I would like to encourage everyone who has living male relatives to get them in A test group, it one has been started, and therefore increase the possibilities of finding new, previously unknown relationships. The group gets the considerably discounted rates from Family Tree DNA. If interested please check out the COOPER DNA Surname Project website at: http://www2.arkansas.net/~bcooper2k/ The testing service we are using is Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com, or info@familytreedna.com). There are over 50 male COOPERs currently in the COOPER SURNAME GROUP. Regards, Gary W. Cooper garluke@juno.com 653 Lover's Lane Road Dawson, Georgia 39842 RockCatt@aol.com wrote: > More commoner sense says that we come from a little "woman" named Lucy, from > the Rift Valley in Africa, discovered some years ago by Dr. Leakey. 1. Sampson County North Carolina Revolutionary Militia
2. Le Bateman
3. I visited the NCGenWeb page and did not find anything on the NOrth Carolina Militia for Sampson County. My ancestor James W. Oates was in Colonel John Armstrong's Militia. Where can I find the roster. And battles he fought in. He received 3 pay vouchers from the Willimington District. This same militia also cleaned up the corruption in Sampson County. Thank you Jaocb L. Bateman III Montgomery, Alabama
