    1. Re: CARROL/CAREL researchers
    2. Lura
    3. Fran, Thank you for posting the land record showing that Demsey Carrol was already living on the west side of Six Runs Creek in 1769. The earliest land record I had for him was a land grant in that same area on December 24, 1770. I still don't understand all the land transactions, but I have seen more than one date on some grants with a notation something like "Date entered" and then another date of the patent or grant. I wonder if Demsey was living on the land as a "homesteader" in 1769 and then paid for it in 1770? Can anyone help me understand that process better? 1. Rainer/Raynor of Sampson Co. NC
    2. Good Morning, I ran into some questions I thought maybe someone could help with. Remember the papers that I forward that Potts had done on DAVID Rainer of Sampson Co. NC., I'm wondering if he was not RIGHT. He had Amy's birth date much earlier, and David's birth date plus he was married twice. Now the question I ran into but cannot answer them with what answers we have. 1. David's death date:::: On AUG. Term of 1820 AMY applied for 1 year provision of land and material things. 2. OCT./ NOV. term of 1820 DAVID Raynor sold to JOHN Raynor for 208 acres proved by Kedar Smith. 3. OCT./NOV. 1820 DAVID Raynor to JAMES J. Raynor for 200 acres proved by Issac Strickland. 4. NOV. 20 1820 Raynor estate and Inventory and account of sales property of DAVID Raynor. 5. May 1828 Report of committee on the estate of David Raynor, decd was returned. Question:::: If our David died before Aug. 1820, he COULD NOT have sold the land to John and James J. Raynor. Betty your William would have been to young, so then would the son William be William David or are we looking at two David's. David who married Amy and another David. Question:: Remember that Amy Raynor wrote her will 1 Aug. 1833 and probated Feb. court 1834. 1. JAN./ Feb Term 1828 Raynor Guardian Ordered Samuel Raynor be guardian of MATTHEW and RICHARD Raynor Bond was $1000.00 Securities were Moore Thornton and Reddick Lee. 2. JAN. /Feb. term 1828 Raynor accounts Order John King, Archibald Monk and Moses Cox be appointed to settle the accounts of AMY RAYNOR late guardian of Matthew and Richard Raynor. 3. In the 1830 census AMY RAYNOR was listed as head of house. So how could this be the same AMY, it could not, there was two AMY's. Minute Docket to AUG. Tem 1837 Sampson Co. No. 32 State vs. Samuel Rainer, Matthew Rainer JR. and Whitfield Thornton. Pease Warrent The defendants solemnly called be failed to answer-An motion judgment of Vis against Samuel Rainer for $100 and MATTHEW Rainer and Whitfield Thornton each for the sum of $50. Notice that Matthew Rainer was a JR., the Matthew of David and Amy was not old another to have a JR. that old. This is just a few of the things that does not match what we all have listed in our records. I went to the Archives yesterday and got Amy's estate papers, there were four pages. Joab, Matthew and Samuel all had notes that were due to Amy's estates. The accounts of estate of things sold listed a few of these names, Joab Rainer bought 2 items, Richard Rainer bought 10 items, Matthew Rainer bought 10 items, Green Hill bought 1, Green Hill 1, B. G. Thornton 1, Wm Rainer bought 3, Sion Hill 2, Wm Cox Ser. 1, James Rainer 1, Benj. I Thornton, 1, Samuel Rainer 1, Jno Eldridge 1, and Whitfield Thornton 1. I think I'm going to the Archives in the morning, does anyone have any ideas to check for more info., I know I'm going to check David's estate records. Thanks, Donna

    1. Needham Thornton, 1800
    2. Ted and Freda Noble
    3. In the Sampson County, North Carolina, Federal Census, I found Needham Thornton, living close to Felix Hines, Jacob Daniel, William Westbrook and Blackwell. For a long time, I have tried to learn the names of my gggrandmother ELIZABETH (born 1795) THORNTON SILLS'S parents. Elizabeth and Clemmons Sills were married in Sampson County, N. Carolina. They named a son James NEEDHAM Sills. Needham Thornton is still there in the 1810 Census with Peter Lee, Arron Lee, John Lee, Westrbrook Lee, several Stricklands, Thomas, Nathaniel, Benjamin, Herod, John and Felix Thornton nearby. Does anyone have information on the family of Needham Thornton? I would be grateful for any info. 3. I was in Autryville the other day and documented a cemetery and want to find out what the real name of the cemetery is if possible if anyone knows. It is outside of Autryville and on a dirt road named Nirvana Road. That is close to Punkintown Road for anyone who knows the area. I can find Punkintown Road on the Gazetter I have but not Nirvana. My mother took me there but did not know the name of the cemetery. I was in hopes that someone on the list might. I tried USGS but did not have any luck. Anyone on the list know the answer to this? I am trying the Sampson & Bladen list in case someone on it might know the answer. In this cemetery there are Halls, Faircloths and Edges just to name some. 1. Re: Parents of MARY POPE (ca 1795-1832)and REDMAN POPE
    2. Pat Alexander
    3. I am forwarding this response to Jerome Tew who was kind enough to answer me with some advice. His email: jdtew@earthlink.net is not working and the email has been returned to me. Pat Jerome, Thanks for your response, and efforts on my behalf. The Redman Pope in Georgia, who died in the civil war, was not my Redman, and do not even know of any connection. I am guessing based on the 1830 NC Sampson County census where he is listed as 20/30 and his wife as 20/30, that he was born between 1800-1810. 1800-1830 seems early to look for a will for him? I am California born and raised, so accessing those sources you suggested is not probable for me. I have had to do my searches on line and am getting to a real stalemate without finding new on line access. Thanks for your trouble! Pat PAT, I do not have any Pope answers for you but it is a touch case. I have looked in Wills and 1800-1830 Count Minutes and Redman POPE is not listed. You have a good approach but some times it does not work. He may be listed as a Wit. to a deed, but the CM do not list those, just grantee and grantor. There was a Redman Crumpler about the same age as your Redman Pope and he was born out of wedlock to a widow. After her husband died, she had about five more children. You might look at estate records in Raleigh and Sampson Deeds 1830-1840. I found a Redman Pope in 1850 GA, was this his son? Good luck. This search is not easy but I think you can ID who Redman Pope was. I was born and schooled in Sampson Co. NC........Jerome Tew

    1. Parents of MARY POPE (ca 1795-1832) and REDMAN POPE (please see other Pope names)
    2. Pat Alexander
    3. dear listers, I have made absolutely no headway in searching for family information on these two people, who were born in Sampson County, North Carolina. Snatching at straws, I will list here all the POPE names I can find in the censuses that lived in Sampson County at the time it seems likely that these two would have been born or lived at home (Mary would have been out of the home by about 1816, and Redman by 1830): Name: 1784 1790 1800 1810 1820 BLACKBURN POPE yes BLACKMON, or BLACKMAN POPE yes yes yes DANIEL POPE yes EPHRAIM POPE yes HARRIS POPE yes JACOB POPE yes yes (2) yes yes JAMES POPE YES (2) JEREMIAH POPE yes yes (2) yes yes JESSE POPE yes yes JONATHAN POPE yes yes JOHN POPE yes (2) JOSHUA POPE yes ROBERT POPE yes STEPHEN POPE yes THOMAS POPE yes yes yes yes yes THOMAS POPE JR yes WEST POPE yes yes yes (2) yes WILLIS POPE yes In 1810, Allen BARBARY, John's brother, lived very near to Johnathan POPE. In 1820, Allen lived 2 doors from Thomas POPE, and very close to Willis POPE and James POPE. In 1820, the first year John BARBARY shows up in the Sampson Co. census, he lives very near a second James POPE, but by this time he is already married to Mary POPE. Now, it seems likely, or at least hopeful, that among these families is the family of Mary POPE m. John BARBARY, and her brother Redman POPE. Redman was in the 1830 Sampson Co. census with 1 M 20/30 and 1 F 20/30 and in the 1835 Sampson Co. Tax list. Mary and Redman apparently came from "a family rich in property and slaves" according to information from a family record in my possession. This has been a total brick wall for me, and would love to have some information. Thanks, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. Pat
