List Members, It seems that the land grant process in NC may not be as simple as the process used in KY listed in the site I posted earlier. Here is a web site which details the VA system, which Fran Powell believes to be more like the NC system. http://home.nc.rr.com/rwbaird/Misc/Landgrants.htm That would make the steps as: 1. Entry 2. Waiting period - important to allow someone to protest. 3. Warrant 4. Survey 5. Patent Three documents are issued for each grant, and all can contain information helpful to researchers. They are the warrant, survey document, and the grant. I started this discussion in the first place, because I wanted to mention to you the great resource from the NC Archives we have available ONLINE to learn the dates of these requests for unassigned land. It can save a lot of trips to the NC Archives. The Manuscript and Archives Reference System, MARS, can be accessed at the following website by following the directions given. http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/archives/MARS.HTM To use it you must put the mouse aside and use the keyboard only. It takes a while to work with it to get the information you need, but it is well worth the effort. When it says "Select Terminal from the following Menu", choice number 1 usually works with most computers. Everything else can be understood by reading the directions. Using MARS you can get the date of the land Entry and the date of the Grant. The date of the survey is not listed. Often the names of adjacent landowners are given. There also Marriage Bond records available there. Armed with the information on these photographed cards, you can write to the Archives for the actual documents if you want them. I have just recently learned to use MARS and found it to be such a valuable resource, I wanted to share the information with you. Lura
Listmembers, I am seeking any information on both William RHODES and Joel WILLIAMS. Both men witnessed deeds with William WEST in Sampson Co. about 1790. Any help appreciated, but am especially interested in parentage of both men. Thanks. Fran powell@closecall.com
Listmembers, can anyone provide the date of this year's hollerin' contest? If so, please contact me off list. Thanks. Fran powell@closecall.com
"SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF.." THE W. P. A.: The Works Progress Administration Pre-1914 Cemetery Inscription Survey for Sampson County, NC. "Between 1935 and 1943 The United States Government as part of the Works Progress Administration Historical Records Survey conducted the WPA cemetery survey project. Contained within are some cemeteries and graves that have been lost since the project was finished and may be the only known recording or record of a given cemetery." This information was taken from an old WPA filmstrip. This book contains 420 gravesites. 287 pages with index. Listed above is a new book I have completed. Does anyone have a list on the children of John Wright Raynor Sr., his son John Wright Raynor Jr. and his son John Wright Raynor (also listed as Jr. but would be the 3rd). I just found out that my husband's line Funifold Raynor's daughter Emma was married to James B. who was the son of John Wright Raynor JR. ( the first Jr.) Trying to get all the Raynors listed in the right group. I would love for anyone to send me there line on the Raynor's, Rainer, and sometimes spelled Raines from the following counties, Johnston, Sampson, Duplin, Wayne, Harnett and Cumberland Co. Thanks in advance, Donna

List members, I recently asked for help understanding the process of land acquisition. I didn't know the difference in a patent, warrant, or grant. Fran Powell sent an answer that was quite helpful. Then a few days ago someone on another list shared a website that is helpful not only for that but also to understand the meaning of other words we encounter in genealogy. You will want to check it out: http://www.sos.ky.gov/Land/landofficeglossary.asp Although this is a KY website, I believe the same process was used in NC. It seems there were four steps necessary to acquiring uninhabited land, and there were at least three separate documents. I thought this might be helpful to you as well. Patent - (noun or verb) The method by which government disposes of unappropriated land. 1.. Warrant - first step in land patenting, this document authorizes the survey. May be combined with other warrants to increase acreage. 2.. Entry - second step in land patenting. Filing in county surveyor's entry book that reserves land until the field survey is made. 3.. Survey - (noun) third step in land patenting. Consists of a plat drawing, metes & bounds description & identification of survey team. 4.. Grant - fourth step in land patenting. Document issued by the governor conveying title to previously unappropriated land. As I understand it, a landowner should not sell the property unless the entire process has been followed and all fees have been paid. However, it appears that not all the documents have been kept in the various places they were supposed to be filed. I have found some with a grant but no record of warrant or survey, and I have found some with a warrant but no record of a grant. The process was different in Virginia. There Patents were issued in accordance with the "headrights" system. Under this system, every person who paid his own way to Virginia would be assigned 50 acres of land, and if he paid for the transportation of others, he recieved an additional 50 acres for each. There were also conditions about retaining posession. I hope this helps someone else as you search for the documents you need. Lura
Is anyone on this list researching Wilsons in Sampson Co? Looking for Wilsons who would be interested in doing a DNA test to finally prove which of these Wilsons found in Sampson Co are related. There is a Wilson project currently underway at www.familytreedna.com. I have no financial interest in Family Tree DNA, but have been trying to sort out the related Wilsons in Sampson Co for years. Our family is headed by Elisha Moore Wilson who arrived in Sampson Co in ca 1780. I know there must still be Wilsons living in Sampson Co. Could somebody local look in the phone book and count how many Wilsons are listed? Thanks, Marilyn
Would be interested in knowing if anyone is researching the Fellows family of North Carolina. I have William M. Fellows & Ellen in the 1850 Louisiana Censes , Union Parish , Marion Post Office. William M. Fellows age is 35 , Ellen 25 , son William 8 , daughter Mary 6 , son John 4 , son Edward 2 , and daughter Ellen 7/12 . All the children were born in Louisiana. William M. Fellows shows to be born in North Carolina . Ellen shows to be born in Virginia . Also living in the house hold is Edward Eckles born in Virginia. I think Edward may be Ellen's brother. John
Alice, I have a marriage bond for Alexander Carol and Lucy Ryal issued in DUPLIN County in 1783 - one year before Sampson County was formed from half of Duplin County. I think marriage bonds would have then been issued in Sampson County beginning in 1784. Before that date they would have all been in Duplin County. I don't know the date when the marriage license replaced the marriage bond. I hope that helped a little. Listmembers, Since I am looking for information on folks whose last known residence was in Sampson County, I reviewed some of the recent issues of Huckleberry Historian (hereafter, HH). There I discovered writeups on several of the folks and/or their families for whom I have been searching. From memory: Micajah BELL whose parentage is provided; one of theMCLAMB folks, possibly William, etc. The point of this post is that HH is a good source of local Sampson/Duplin information. Jerome TEW has done us a service by providing information on the persons who participated in the RW (Revolutionary War.) Duplin County has its quarterly: FOOTNOTES. Bladen County Historical Society also publishes a quarterly: BACK TO BLADEN. Each of these publications does a great job in providing information on that which most of us research: local folks and places. Fran powell@closecall.com
